Years ago, Mr. uvular was stationed in Texas (Army), and they went to help out in the aftermath of a tornado. Red Cross was there, and he said they charged the servicemen for coffee and donuts!
I've seen other such stories posted by freepers; would never give 'em a dime.

--it has been reported that homosexual groups plan to hassle the Salvation Army bell ringers this season, due to the SA stand on same-sex pairs. If I was a retired cop or fireman, I'd gather a group of my contemporaries and go see that this didn't happen--

I won't walk so fast past the pots with the bell ringers this christmas.

That does it for me.I have read way too many articles like this one. I am convinced that the Salvation Army does Gods work. I am putting them at the top of my charity list.
Opportunity Village is a local is a local org. that works with special needs children. They teach them to fit into society, work for a living and even have their own apartment. I have witnessed my friends brother go there and he married a girl and they have a place of their own. It is amazing. He also did very well in the special olympics.
I also give to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission which feeds the homeless. In order to get a meal you must sit through a sermon. I am pretty sure the Salvation Army does that as well. I even got a chance to witness there once with some of motorcycle riding buddies.

Non-Christians such as myself continue to support organizations like the SA because they do GOOD WORK. Religion is irrelevant. The Red Cross is a just another corporate vampire. The past presence of Liddie Dole in the RC just proves the point...the Kid.

While my uncle was disposing of unexploded shells in England, France and Germany, the Salvation Army was always a welcome site. Compared to the Red Cross, the Salvation Army never charged for coffee, chocolate or other supplies. With the Red Cross showing their true greedy colors lately, I will never give the Red Cross a stinking dime! Go Salvation Army!

Some honesty is in order here. Let's not forget the real name of the "Red Cross" and where donations go: the International Federation of Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies.

Red Cross president Bernadine Healy had already resigned from her $450,010 position They got Bernadine for a song. As I remember, Liddie Dole got a million a year for her effort.
I was at a conference at a fancy-dancy hotel in St. Louis and in the next conference room was a meeting of the Red Cross. That's why they have to charge people for coffee and donuts, they gotta pay their hotel tabs.

In our area, I know the local SA district leader must listen to a police/fire scanner. I can't tell you the number of times I've been on a fire scene, and had the SA pull up with their canteen truck(without us calling), and give out hotdogs, breakfast sandwiches, coffee, gatorade, etc. They usually hang out until it's over, then quietly pack up and go on their way. Never charging for their services, and humbly accepting our thanks for the job they do.
Quite a difference from the Red Cross.

While the Red Cross practiced organizational damage control over the past month, several reporters noted that the Salvation Army pays its top executive, John Busby, $13,000 a year, plus frugal room, board and transportation expenses. This was the item that really stood out for me. The difference between organizations such as Red Cross and United Way vs. Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, etc.; is the difference between making a career choice and choosing a vocation.
I have posted previously on this forum that my husband, some years ago, worked with a guy who had previously worked at United Way. He quit and told my hubby that he would never donate to them. He saw first hand the fraud and abuse that went on with the money. Taking care of the upper administration people is what United Way does first with the money donated.

I agree with this writer.
My father was a fireman for the city of Chicago for 40 years. He says that when they were out in the winter trying to put out fires, the Salvation Army would show up with hot coffee and some food. He says he never saw the Red Cross.
