Political Correctness Poisons Free Speech
The Minnesota Daily online ^

Posted on 12/29/2001 12:11:38 PM PST by Enough is ENOUGH

Exerpt: "The connection between the Frankfurt School and the student rebellion of the 1960s was made primarily by a key Frankfurt School member, Herbert Marcuse -- the man who in the '60s coined the phrase, "Make love, not war." Marcuse's books, "Eros" and "Civilization," argued that the tools with which to destroy Western culture were, in effect, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. He popularized the Frankfurt School's ideas in ways the '60s radicals could understand and absorb, and we now know his work as political correctness."

We react daily to the consequences of "political correctness" without addressing its source. We cannot wage a war against this evil without an understanding of its founder, Antonio Gramsci and his purpose.

Exerpts:

"In order for political correctness to succeed, the people who will never give up their freedom must be undermined. Give credibility to those who support you and take it away from those who don’t. For this reason, political correctness favors words and phrases that carry a certain bias. Homophobia, for example, is a misleading term. Homophobic people are not afraid of homosexuals as the suffix phobic implies. These people are not ridden with some disease. Homophobic is a term given to people who disapprove of homosexuality. Here, political correctness subtly slanders the belief that homosexuality is deviant behavior. At the same time, it defends homosexuality, a lifestyle formerly shunned by our culture."

"Political correctness forces people to focus conversation on attitude and not logic. Political correctness encourages mindless appreciation of equality at the expensive of honest thought and logic... Political correctness also supplies an abundance of words that are less accurate than the words they aim to replace."

Good post.

For those who don't know, Gramsci basically was a proponent of "Cultural Marxism" or "Marxism by other Means".

Gramsci, and the Frankfurt school knew that undisguised Marxism would never make it in Western civilization, so they came up with a camouflaged version.

The Democrat party is basically a cultural Marxist party today, and the GOP is well on the way to becoming one.

The people on this website who are always pushing the "abuse" button to stifle views that transgress political correctness are basically Gramscian Marxists.

They may call themselves "conservatives" or "Republicans", but their tactics and end-goal is the same.

I was an "American Studies" major in college and graduated in 1991. I never really understood what hit me quite frankly, but the last 10 years have been an intense unlearning of what in retrospect was clear Marxist indoctrination. The head of the department was so smart. Such a hipster, too. And she played up the roloe of understanding older sister versus the domineering mother or father figure.

All of the European names from above: Adorno, Marcuse, Fromm, Lukacs, etc. were part of my curriculum. And "deconstruction" was the name of the game. And to be honest with you, I think I was saved because I plum didn't understand it -- at all.

By the end of my Junior year, I was confused and just wanted to graduate. At a friends graduation from Stanford, his religious studies department graduation was held with the 'American Studies' Dept. I half jokingly asked one of the Am studies grads: "So what exactly is 'American Studies'?"

His response was just as confusing as my own interpretation of what it was.

In retrospect it was clearly subversive anti-Americanism built up with a name that was probably meant to draw in young, impressionable dupes like me.

Part of me is angry at myself that I was not up for the challenge to take on the drivel at the time, bt I was not as armed as I am today. And part of me wants to give back the degree which cost my parents a pretty penny.

But my resolution is keeping up with a true education on what it is to be truly American. And to study America is not to add up slavery with the Japanese internment and multiply it by Jim Crow.

I do think my obligation is to tell people, anyone who will listen, that getting back the universities is as important as getting back the media. I think that David Horowitz is clearly the most knowledgable leader on this front, but there needs to be a Bernard Goldberg and a Tammy Bruce from within the Ivy Walls with a liberal pedigree who helps to break down the dam.

And tying the academia to the media as the main culprits in the degradation of American values and standards could be legitimate goals in the Culture War in the coming years.

The current period in which we live (heightened patriotism) has put THEM on the defensive. We have control and should not shrink from the responsibility. It is time to go on the offensive and the publishing this piece in a college publication is a nice start.

On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my Significant Other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me:
TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming,
ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract even though they will not be asked to play a note).
TEN melanin-deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping,
NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression,
EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans,
SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands,
SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products,
FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration, (NOTE: after members of the Animal Liberation Front threatened to throw red paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens and partridge have been reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further Animal-American enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised.)
FOUR hours of recorded whale songs,
THREE deconstructionist poets,
TWO Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses, and
ONE Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree. Happy Holidays!!!! (unless otherwise prohibited by law) Unless, of course, you are suffering from Seasonally Affected Disorder (SAD). If this be the case, please substitute this gratuitous call for celebration with a suggestion that you have a thoroughly adequate day.

Whatever your experiences in college, you have turned into a clear thinker and a good writer. Keep it up, and don't look back. You are already better educated than most of your college professors, regardless of who has what degrees.

I had a similar experience in the Ph.D. Program at American University. The Chair of the Department, Dr. Laura Langbein, made no bones about being a Marxist. And the theoretician she most promoted was a women named Theda (Something) on the faculty of Harvard, also a Marxist.

It is difficult, but not impossible, when the authority figures around you, and most importantly the professors who are grading your papers, are arrogant believers in a false philosophy. But nobody ever said that life was fair.

Congratulations on your intellectual journey. In the immortal words of Stephen Decatur (as I recall), "Damn the torpedos. Full speed ahead."

A classic and very effective use of "political correctness" was used by the communist husband of Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden. His political group sold socialism to the citizens of Santa Monica, CA, under the guise of "Economic Democracy". The ruse being: Who could be against anything with the word "Democracy" in the definition.

The city still hasn't recovered from the social and economic effects of a completely socialist city government. The only thing that did stop them were the natural laws of economics and the city council was begining to face serious constitutional barriers to their "Proclamations for the peoples good".

You are right about 9/11 at this time, however they are willing to take a set back and smile because they believe in the mantra "Three steps foward and two back". It took them all of the 60s to get organized and educated and then they started to take over at the Universities and then high schools and then elementary schools. I believe their biggest setback was the McCarthy Hearings and they were able to turn that around and brand it a witch hunt so well that no one will ever question them again in such a fashion.

I know the feeling. I had a poly sci instuctor who subverted an intro course by turning it into an anti-HUAC course. Although I was politically naive at the time I developed a distrust for instructors in disciplines other than business. As a result, I carefully chose my remaining elective courses.

This experience has stayed with me. I have never doubted for a moment that the leftist movement has infiltrated and taken over our college campuses.

The Democrat party is basically a cultural Marxist party today, and the GOP is well on the way to becoming one.

This is a very very important point. Political correctness has remained unchanged in many (most?) government agencies under the Republicans. They have now held the White House long enough that this can no longer be excused.

The Republicans must denouce all PC with words and then deeds every day or they must be viewed as enemies of free speech and freedom itself.

They must reject the language of liberalism or their own thoughts will be subverted by their language.

"...Tying the academia to the media as the main culprits in the degradation of American values and standards could be legitimate goals in the Culture War in the coming years....[They now are] on the defensive".

True -- there is concerted coordinated linkage between academia and the media, but more importantly, we must recognize where it is indeed first hatched -- at grade school level, where the socialist-driven NEA has not only corrupted and lobomized the American youth from the get-go with their own customized, self-serving subversive agenda, but their powerful lobby simply will not allow politicians to UNconfiscate school taxes and support vouchers and school choice.

Therein lies the root of ALL unAmericanism, IMO -- the NEA's hijacking of education and implementation of a socialist indoctrination.

No one, NO ONE on this forum, is as PC ( their own brand ), code word / phrase addled, as the Libertarians are. Their methods are exactly the same ; from the ubicquitous " statist " , to chained, in chains, authoritarian, etc.! There is NO difference between their attacks , and the homophobe / racists / sexist gambit , to shut others up / change the subject. Instead of the touchy / feely , counter coulture " until you walk in my / their shoes " ( which, unfortunately, some FREEPERS ascribe to ) , they try to beat everyone else over the head with the Constitution.

"It can't be stated enough that PC is the death of free speech"

That is SO true; which is furthur proof that the liberals promoting this garbage are operating at diminished mental capacity as they make their irrational demands in the name of free speech. Just as they always seek out a convenient excuse where they can hang their utter lack of accountablity, it is nice to have a pseudo-constitutional premise on which to base their unreasonable demands. Still, we foolishly misinterpret the concept of free speech ourselves, as if the right of free speech was a guarantee of a microphone and a television camera. I'm afraid that as long as we treat these morons as if they deserve to be taken seriously, this infection will continue to fester.

While what you discuss does have Continental European aspects and partial roots, the main thrust of the movement for an undifferentiated humanity--which is what "political correctness" clearly seeks--comes right out of the American Universities that accepted the slanted views of Ashley Montagu and Gordon Allport and Norman Cousins in the 1940s and 1950s. (See Myths & Myth Makers In American Higher Education.)

Perhaps we are merely arguing over who should get the most credit for destroying our civilization. Those who hate it, have long cooperated in trying to bring about our demise.

I briefly scanned an article by a Commanche descendent who said the only way for Americans to fight PC is for us to regain our "warrior spirit" that we used to win this country.

However, that being said, I welcome all 3 of the above divergent strains of conservatism.

This forum, like many insitutions of "the right" seem to have been targetted for a take-over by the "neo-cons". It is only my own opinion of course, but the spiritual ancestor of the "neo-con" strain of conservatism, are the ex-Trotskyite intellectuals, primarily out of New York.

In their zeal to impose their own view of "conservatism", they remind me very much of the real deal Marxists, who, of course, banished and silenced, anyone who took a contrary opinion.

IMO this is a must read:

Occam's Razor at PCU by Diane Alden

Is the Dumbing Down of America working?

•42 percent of American adults cannot locate Japan on a world map, and 15 percent cannot even locate the United States.

•40 percent of American adults do not know that Germany was our enemy in World War II.

•84 percent of American college seniors do not know who was president at the start of the Korean War.

•58 percent of American high school seniors cannot understand a newspaper editorial in any newspaper.

•According to a U.S. Department of Education survey of 22,000 students in 1995, 50 percent were unaware of the Cold War and 60 percent did not know how the United States came into existence.

•63 percent of American adults believe that the earliest human beings lived at the same time as dinosaurs, 53 percent believe the earth revolves around the sun, and 91 percent can't state what a molecule is.

***********************************************************

The collegiate and intellectual left did not blink or break stride when Marxism in the form of communism and socialism failed miserably around the world. They just recreated Marxism in the new skins of political correctness and now it is called progressive, or in most cases, the Democratic Party.

Hillary Clinton, Cynthia McKinney and Sheila Jackson Lee, as well as Patrick Leahy, Teddy Kennedy, Tom Daschle and George Miller would be good examples. The progressive and unaccountable left now probably controls half the votes in the United States. They get their intellectual ammunition from the universities, which everyone, left or right, pays for.

All our problems come from self-deception and political euphamisms. Lying that warps our moral compasses:

1)Social security IS slavery.

2)We must imprison all who support terrorists, physically or monetarily -- but it is OK to enrich China by engaging in trade because when the Chinese government aborts babies, they sneak up on them real slow so as not to TERRORIZE anybody.

And thats the important thing, to have a Merry Christmas.

Thank you for providing the link. This is chilling stuff. One paragraph rings out like the bell in the Old North Church on a quiet Middlesex evening:

Whereas conventional Marxist-Leninists were hostile towards the non-Communist left, Gramsci argued that alliances with a broad spectrum of leftist groups would prove essential to Communist victory. In Gramsci's time these included, among others, trade unions, and socialist political groups. In our time, alliances with the left would include radical feminists, extremist environmentalists, "civil rights" movements, anti-police associations, internationalists, ultra-liberal church groups, and so forth. These organizations, along with open Communists, together create a united front working for the transformation of the old Christian culture.

There you have it. That is the Left, in its latter-day incarnation. There is our enemy.
