A 72-year-old woman is one of three members of a Green Cove Springs family now in jail, accused of selling marijuana.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested Elnora "Granny" Layfield, along with Michael and Linda Layfield, last Friday in their Stauffer Street home. Officer seized approximately 30 bags of marijuana valued at $1,200 from the house.

Police said that undercover officers bought marijuana at the home on four separate occasions prior to issuing a search warrant. When officers entered the home, the elder Layfield was found sitting in a living room with several bags of marijuana.

"It's unusual to find someone her age selling pot, but she's not the first and probably won't be the last," said Lt. Larry Thompson, who heads up the Clay County Drug Task Force, which co-ordinates the efforts of the sheriff's office, the Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments.

All three suspects were charged with possession, sale and delivery of marijuana over 20 grams, a felony with penalties of up to five years in jail upon conviction.

Elnora Layfield has two prior drug-related charges.

"Maybe a little jail time will send a stronger message to her -- because probation isn't working," Thompson said.

Most tobacco is smoked in cigarette form, most of which have cottony filters, which obviously absorb a lot of the tar*.

True, but if you inspect a tobacco pipe and a pot pipe, both used equally, the pot pipe will have substantially more build up of tar than the tobacco pipe.

The claim that it has after effects for several weeks is very debatable

Not the claim that the THC remains in your fat cells for that long.

I knew of no one that smoked pot that didn't have to go at least a week to feel completely sober. Is it different for you?

I'd tell you to try it, but that would be illegal. :-)

Would you(weinerdog.com) walk out to the junkie and say, "Mr. Junkie, I am a Libertarian, and since you are bothering no one, just shooting up, I as a "Libertarian constitutionalist" will respect your right to shoot up anywhere, anytime, and will not call the local authorities."

Well I'm not weinerdog.com but you threw it out there so:

If the junkie was in my yard I would ask them to leave. If they didn't, then a call to the authorities would be in order. If they weren't in my yard and were not harrassing anyone, why is it my concern? What if they were having a beer or twelve? Is that any different? I don't feel the need to try and run people's lives for them. And anyone who thinks they know what is better for someone else is a little dictator wannabe. And for the record, I don't do drugs. Go figure.

So, say you smoked heavily for a month. Then suddenly stopped.........

You are saying that after 12 hours from your last smoke you would fell exactly the same from then on, until you smoked again, be it several weeks?

THC metabolites, which does not equate to active THC staying in your system, at least not to everyone. Certainly not to me.

Let's see....two years ago I went to my sister's house in Oregon for 3 weeks over Christmas break. I had no pot there, and really, I felt more sober, but nothing drastically different (if there was I didn't notice it) from the second day there than the last day. Sleep has much more to do with clear-headedness to me than not smoking pot for a couple weeks. In fact, usually a night of good night of sleep (8+ hours) clears it all up for me in the morning.

THC seems to have a much longer "half-life" in the body than alcohol because it's fat soluble, instead of water soluble like alcohol. Given heavy, long term exposure I'd expect that the amount you retained would depend on the amount of fatty tissue in your body. I'd expect a skinny person might well clear it out of their system quicker, simply because there's less fatty tissue for it to build up in. I don't know if this has been studied or not, but I think it would make sense, and account for the wide range of anecdotal evidence.

I guess some people are just blessed with better systems.

Like me with tobacco. I can smoke 2 packs a day for months then stop smoking, without a second thought. For some reason, no matter how much I smoke or chew, I cannot get addicted. But it takes me forever to work up a tolerance. If I have not smoked at all within a few weeks. One Marlboro ultralight will get me sick. I have to slowly work my way up.

I couldn't gain a pound if I had to. According to the fancy electronic scale gizmo in the gym at work, my body fat content is about 11%. I've never used heavily, or for an extended period, but on the occasions I have partaken, my experience has been similar to Nate's.

That might be it then. I tried to think back to remeber if my real thin friends that smoked it had the same reaction, but of the ones I can think of, they all were pot heads and never stopped long enought to tell :-)
