I had the honor of buying the 1st ticket, for the 1st show in the theater I saw it in this afternoon.
THANK YOU for ALL YOU have done on this film.
I was hoping for "closure" BUT this movie made me realize that the TRUE stories of Viet Nam
must be told to our new generations.

This great ..MEL GIBSON.. Segment repeats itself in the last 15 minutes of this hour on the FoX News Channel. Just got done with it. O'Reilly was right. And Gibson had the cojones to do it right.
The gratifying thing is this is not some post-9/11 patriotic hype. To hear Gibson tell it, this film wrapped sometime in July, well before the terrorist attacks.
If the media reflect the value of the culture even to a small extent, maybe things are finally turning.

I was hoping for "closure" BUT this movie made me realize that the TRUE stories of Viet Nam must be told to our new generations. You hit on a key point here. Not only must they be told to our children, but also by them. When I was in graduate school (M.A. History, 1992) I could not fathom why the department offered nothing on Vietnam. Not a survey, not a lecture, not a graduate seminar, nothing. The entire faculty was your typical pseudo-sophisticated, intellectually-fraudulent, hand-wringing, liberal, hate-America crowd. Just like now.
Considering their side won the war (at least to hear them tell it), and there was fertile ground for them to validate the Jane Fonda, war-protesting, draft-dodger outlook on it, they still wouldn't go near it. And it made no sense to me then, but it's beginning to now.
Almost the entire faculty were war protesters, draft dodgers, or professional students when the war was raging. The judgment of history is beginning to come clear on this:
Those of us who served stood the test of fire, and they didn't. And they're ashamed of their own cowardice.
So don't expect anything resembling a "scholarly" approach to Vietnam from the current generation of history professors. They're a disgrace. Damn straight we're going to have to wait for future generations to tell the tale. And damn straight they'll do a better job of it than the current crop of gutless cowards who occupy tenured faculty positions at American universities today, all snug, safe and secure from such things as termination for cause or intellectual honesty.

...Yes, most big movie productions last year had to make plans to finish by the end of June 2001 I think because of the end of the Writers' Contract. They signed a new one without any loss of production time in the end.

My wife took the day off of work so she and I could go see this at the first showing.
Mel is our favorite actor and Braveheart is one of our favorite movies, but I'd have to say that this movie comes pretty close to it.
I think Randall Wallace did a terrific job directing the movie as well as writing the screenplay.
Mel did a great job with his acting. After the initial scene with him, I forgot it was Mel up on the screen and was totally into the character, I started to think it was actually Lt. Col. Hal Moore, a true sign of good acting IMHO.
The score was fabulous and the mix of music and picture was perfect!
I missed part of the credits, was it James Horner?
The only regret, I wish the movie was longer, yes longer. I would have enjoyed even more character developement than they had.
The whole movie my eyes were moist but I have to say, the ending left me weeping.
One of my dreams is to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, just to pay my respects and I think seeing this movie has finally convinced my wife to agree with me to make plans when and if we can!
I saw Joe Galloway and Hal Moore on FNC earlier and saw Mel on O'Reilly. They all seemed proud of this movie.

May God bless you, Alohia Ronnie, and all those who served our country in Vietnam. I just saw this wonderful movie and I can't express how I feel. I graduated from High School in 1962 and have classmates that served and died in that war. Some that came home have never been the same.
This should be required viewing in every high school history class and for sure, required viewing in Congress. Maybe if enough people see this, next time that little p**ck Dashole mentions not wanting to spend any more money on the war effort, he'll get creamed.
See this movie FReepers. In fact, see it twice, because the first time your eyes will be full of tears.

I am not one who goes out to see new movies when they are released.
Same here, but I did the impetuous thing and got to see it at the 3:30PM showing
in West Los Angeles.
Take a few Kleenex. There were more than a couple of older fellows with reddened
eyes after the show was over.
Forget "Platoon". This is THE Vietnam Era film, respectful, truthful,
emotional without being over-the-top with sentimentality, and honest
about the crappy treatment of vets.
And didn't demonize the enemy...but at the same time didn't slip into moral relativism.

I don't know if I'm reading too much into this...AND I don't think this is a spoiler...
But the next time you see the film (in case you didn't notice),
read the sign over the door at the end of the airport hallway the soldier is being wheeled
down.
I think it was sending a nice, subtle message about the status assigned to a lot of the
returning vets.
Yep, that scene wrecked me pretty well too.
