Not surprising that Pat Buchanan would endorse a poor economic move. This will cost a lot more jobs than it saves.
Par for the course for the trade Luddite, Buchanan -- but this totalitarian-socialist, protectionist move also violates Bush's promise to endorse increased taxes only "over [His] dead body!"
Thirty Per Cent "tariff" [IE: TAX!] on steel imports will substantially increase the [Indirect] tax burden on every American family which will pay more for every single item it buys for no better "reason" than to bail out a bunch of inept crooks and their rapacious racketeer/union masters, who have colluded to price American steel out of the range of competing imports in order to pay grossly inefficient and unproductive workers at two or three times their worth.
Shame on you Mr Bush!
Shame on you!
Atlas Shrugged is alive and well!

You know you've done something wrong when Pat Buchanan praises it. Hopefully this will be the last and only time.

The world is dumping steel 30% below cost in the USA. How is letting pure capitalism going to counter this without the 30% tariff? It could easily become a national security issue if we just let all the steel mills go belly up !

Steel production is an industry vital to National Defense.
Care to tell us what this mindless slogan actually means?
How much steel, for example, is used for "national defense" -- as compared to automobile manufacture and/or toasters and/or pet parrot cages?
Care to hazard a rationalization and/or justification as to why is grossly-inefficiently-produced and overpriced American steel any more "vital to 'national defense'" than, say, Brazilian or Korean or Japanese steel?
Or does it just make you ffffffffeeeeeellllll better?
To: Willie Green
The "free trade" extremists typically ignore national security interests in their quest to fatten their portfolios.Amen. Too many folks believe their financial well-being is the only reason America exists.

Since it is apparent that you have a total disregard for the national security of the United States, I'll post an informative link for the benefit of others.

The bad thing about this is , although it helps our steelmakers, the steel union members will STILL vote Democratic. Just wait and see

You do not have a clue about the US steel industry or you would not make such idiotic statements. Did you not read the article at the beginning of this thread? US steelworkers are the most efficient on earth. US steelworkers brave searing heat, pollution, one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, work weekends, holidays, shifts for about $15-$18 per hour. I doubt you could work one shift in a mill without quitting and running back to your office to drink your morning latte, let alone do it for those wages.
Foreign steelmakers are selling steel in this country at below the cost of production. They can do this because their governments subsidize these steelmakers. The tariff is intended to address this inequity. It is temporary.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. The rhetoric in Steel Labor, the United Steelworkers of America's monthly magazine hasn't had a bad thing to say about President Bush since he instigated the ITC investigation. Union members know who their friends are and have not voted monolithically since President Reagan was in office.

Well, that's good news for American industries who use steel, and American consumers then. If this cycle is as black and white as you describe, foreign steel would ultimately go under. Then the heroic American steel unions would have no competition.

When a steel mill shuts down and the heat is turned off, blast funaces, coke ovens and other facilities vital to the steel-making process are ruined beyond repair. Even if foreign governments decide to stop subsidizing their steel industries and there is no more dumping, there may not be a US steel industry there to pick up the leavings.

And saying that -- reducing this to discussing me rather than the point -- to follow up the rest of your mindless bloody sloganeering, surely beats the Hell out of addressing my contention that none of: you; the trade Luddite, Buchanan; the grossly inefficient steel makers, the crime-family unions your sloganeering -- or, in this instance, George W Bush -- have any credibility whatsoever!
Tariff = Tax -- is paid by every American -- and ACHIEVES NOTHING POSITIVE!
ACHIEVES NO GOOD WHATEVER!
