The Forest Service wouldn't get away with stuff like that in this country. This is America and we have a Constitution which protects us from NAZIs like that and.......Oops sorry.

What was the guy actually charged with?

Don't see any mention of the actual charges. The headline implies one thing and the article implies something else. Nowhwere is mentioned the actual charges. Did the guy not file taxes or what?

Forest fires are so often caused by lightening in areas where it has been forbidden to cut trees. Too many dry trees, too much underbrush, one flash of lightening and POOF the forest goes up in smoke. So many more trees, animals, and people die during forest fires that could have been prevented by clearing out a few trees and underbrush. God put humans and trees on this earth for a reason, we are supposed to use them! Of course liberals don't care about humans, we have to get their sympathy by reminding them of the animals that could die in a fire.

You said, "Stupid is as Stupid does. I'm sorry, but everyone reading this please understand, if you go to court representing yourself in anything bigger than small claims, please understand you are going to get SCREWED!."

Apparently, you didn't read very carefully...

This was not the first time the truthful and honorable Waite had experienced the bureaucratic wrath of Green. In 1995 Green filed criminal charges against Waite in Idaho District Federal Court for plowing a USFS road that led to a mining claim and some property owned by Waite and his family. Green claimed that Waite had damaged the road with his bulldozer. Waite, who had been building roads and operating heavy equipment in the area for some 30 years, does not believe that a road full of potholes is damaged after you've filled in the potholes. Rather than waste his limited resources by hiring an attorney in this frivolous matter, Waite defended himself. He showed Federal Magistrate Judge Larry Boyle the statute that authorizes him to keep the road to his private property open even if the road crosses through federal land. Judge Boyle dismissed the charges against Waite. Those that know Green and how his mind works believe the dismissal dealt a severe blow to his bureaucratic esteem. They believe Green was awaiting the day when he could even some imaginary score.

This guy was successful in defending himself on a previous matter, against this very same accuser. The second time, he got a different (and apparently corrupt) judge. When you have a corrupt judge and a corrupt prosecuter railroading you to jail on trumped-up charges, IT DOESN"T MATTER if you have a lawyer.

What was Waite charged with?

...Waite was indicted for "willfully retaining U.S. property in excess of $1,000....with intent to convert the property to his own use or gain,"

No, he HAD a permit to cut trees, and showed the court that he did in fact cut from a place where he was permitted to cut. You seem to not have read the article at all; it explains why his imprisonment is so outrageous. This was a government vendetta, period.

-this is just another example of the hundreds or maybe thousands of "little guys" who keep getting the shaft fron uncah sugah and his armed mercenaries and word twisters. We hear about the big cases like jarbridge and klamath, but when it's a single guy it mostly falls through the cracks. I'm glad this one got some news coverage. Similar just happened to charlie puckett, but he decided that the probable outcome of his 100% guaranteed shafting, 20 or more years in jail, when he is in his 50's, was more or less a state mandated death sentence, so I guess he boogied on down the road according to his last statement linked to the freerepublic site here..

And when there is no redress left, when petitions and hiring word twisters doesn't matter, when the outcome is so obviously predetermined even before one of their kangaroo court showtrials- then what is left, exactly? Just '"take it"? Keep hiring word twisters when the main arguments that they won't acknowledge in the slightest always boil down to the government doesn't follow constitutional law anymore, and they don't care if you know it or not? I mean, really, who honestly believes that "they" aren't aware of all their illegal actions? Might be one two year old kid left who can't see that.

The feral government -this junta of professional liars and conmen and strong arm thugs- is completely and totally outta control. My advice to any federal employees who are still decent people and consider themselves to be decent and patriots is to QUIT, and remove yourself from association with the next of vipers. Ya'all got cooties now, tainted. It's gotten to the point that it is pretty obvious that the system not only is unfixable, but they are heck bent on being worse, much much worse,-on purpose and with malice afore-thought. They are NOT going to change one bit at the highest decison making levels about squat except to keep instituting this global corporate fascism combined with bureuacratic socialism to reward their minions and keep the bulk of the population in check and in terror. A lot of people won't admit it, they'll even deny it, but when extreme normal common sense is completely absent from government, and when you are ORDERED to believe their fantasies, when you are ordered that you must obey or else, then that is official sanctioned insanity. It's not a government and a people anymore, don't know what to call it, but it's not a legitimate government.

Sad but true. A guy I work with and two of his buddies were fined $200 EACH last weekend near Truckee, Kalifornia. They had cut some wood, from a dead pile that the USFS had pushed up with a dozer, for a warming fire. The total amount of wood was less than a small pick-up load. The "ranger" threatened them with felony charges and also asked very bluntly why they were "in the forest during the middle of winter?".
