Al Qaeda Had Mogadishu G.I.-Hero's Property

In what is being described as a "stunning" and "extraordinarily emotional find," U.S. forces scouring caves in Afghanistan have uncovered a handheld Global Positioning Systems satellite unit that apparently belonged to an Army Special Forces master sergeant killed in Somalia ten years ago.

The GPS unit was marked with the initials "G. Gordon," which U.S. officials believe stands for Sgt. Gary Gordon, one of two Medal of Honor winner from the battle of Mogadishu, ABC Radio News reports.

An Air Force spokesman told the network the find could possibly tie Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network to Somalia.

Don't want to be too cynical but doesn't this sound a bit too convenient, not to mention, unlikely?

Sure, because the much more logical conclusion is that the U.S. military held onto the device all these years for the specific purpose of planting it in some god foresaken Al Qaeda cave or somewhere else right?

How the hell do I know? I was asking a question. Just seems very odd to me.

Time to go back and finish the job in Somalia. Permanently. Settle our score with the Aidid clan. Because this time, we are not leaving until we're done.

Let us avenge the brave men we lost.

This sort of linkage might resonate with the sheeple.

Nope.

Many serial killers take trophys or leave odd symbols at the scene of their crimes and trophy taking by the military is probably as old as combat itself (although it is expressly forbidden in our own). You can get anything on the black market and it is easy to imagine that an item like that would have fetched a pretty penny from those who would have the money and the want to have it as a trophy. Remember too that Al Quaida is a close knit, loyal group. That item was probably almost mythical in its symbolic significance to them and I'd bet bin Laden used it in his propaganda and training methods among his followers.

There is not a doubt in my mind that they left it there knowing we would find it- wanting us to know that they were connected to his death. It is a taunt, if you will. I hope this war goes on until every single one of those rat b@stards is dead.

It's not odd at all. Al Qaeda has been tied to what went on in Somalia for some time.

One of the zealots must have kept the GPS as a trophy after Mogadishu and brought it with him when he came to Afghanistan to fight in the "jihad".

It has been pretty common knowledge for a long time that Al-Qaeda participated in the Somalia attacks. Its not so surprising that equipment taken in that fight would show up with them.

But wait! Let me put on my tinfoil hat and try again...

if the GPS device still works, I wonder if our satellites can still pick up the signal when the GPS device is shoved up Bin LADENS ARSE?

Spoils of war. The Al Qaeda operates on high tech communications - it's the only way they've survived this far.

Excellent comment, Fred.

'Resonating with the sheeple' needs to be the focus of the presentation of public issues that are near and dear to Freepers' hearts.

Not only do Republicans need the 'content', they also need the 'packaging' of their message to govern effectively, or to govern at all.

Selling the message to people who are marginal in their understanding of issues may seem too manipulative for the idealists.

But if our objectives are truly in the best interests of America and the sheeple (and I am hard-pressed to think of even one issue from taxation to military spending that is not) it is not pompous, elitist or presumptuous, it is just plain smart.

Don't speak Latin to a dog, and

Never underestimate the value of sheeple.

It doesn't work that way. The device is a receiver picking up signals from the satellites.

I'd rather see if Bin Laden could personally verify whether it's still working by having his head shoved up his butt while he's being flown to Gitmo.

Thanks for the ping, Fred. See #19. Also note #17 on connected thread there. I guess a couple of SNAFUs are to be expected with all the info we gather :)
