FReeper-Recommended Family Films
Us | 3/24/2002 | Daniel J. Phillips (BibChr)

I am here to ask for, and offer, help!

We have a weekly tradition called Burger Night. I cook for the family my own special formula for burgers, and show them a movie.

Here's the hard part: the movie has to have something for a family ranging in age from 2 to 46. Okay, we go soft on the 2yo, because he's hit-and-miss at this point. But that leaves boys aged 6 and 15, an 18yo girl, my wife and me.

Here are the criteria.

Here are some examples in both categories:

HITS (to varying degrees)

A COUPLE OF MISSES

Those are not exhaustive lists, but they should give you an idea (and maybe ideas of your own).

So now it's your turn. Every week, it gets harder for me to pick another movie that'll be a winner. I'm soliciting suggestions.

So please name your recommendations for family fare, with any brief comments you'd add. My (our) thanks in advance.

How about "Galaxy Quest" starring Tim Allen? I think that one would qualify as a "hit" for your family. I know we really enjoyed it, and I think it would be OK for young kids.

Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen (both Terry Gilliam films).

They have the redeaming feature of multiple layers. The six year old will love them and they will not bore the eighteen year old to death. Their is a little sexual inuendo in Munchhausen but it will whooosh right over the little kids head.

Also any Monty Python film is great for kids. Again things they should not get just go over their heads. (Can't I have just a little peril. No it's too perilous. Bet you're gay.)

The Marx Brothers and Abbott and Costello are very good at teaching children what good humor is all about. A few years ago I bought the whole "Our Gang" series. It was a excellent investment.

What is the Father of all rivers?

The Misterssippii.

Some of our family's recent viewings:

From the Mixed Up File of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Spy Kids

Twilight Zone (original TV episodes)

Finding Forrester (might not appeal to 6-year-old)

Cirque du Soliel: Dralion

We've rented these on DVD from netflix.com.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World (long but very silly!)

Father Goose (Cary Grant & Leslie Caron)

All the Star Wars films

Toy Story 1 & 2

Wizard of Oz

Mary Poppins

Chicken Run/Great Escape double feature

Fievel Goes West (FAR superior to An American Tale - you obviously like westerns & the kids will eat this up!)

That's almost as precious as Atreides' 2nd pick.
