Did anyone see The Best Damn Sports Show Period when Tom Arnold did the "Things you dont say to Bobby Knight" skit? Damn funny, the only one I remember is,

"Hey Coach, you using that chair?"...JFK

"Bobby, how does it feel to be eliminated from March Madness in the first round YET AGAIN, while your old team will be playing in the Final Four this weekend?"

In his defense, Texas Tech was supposed to finish near the bottom of the pile in the Big 12. Knight did an incredible job his first year there despite Tech's early exit from the Big Dance.

Did you notice that he took at last place team from 2000-01, bounced 4 players and got to the NCAA's. Looked like one hell of a coaching job to me. Can't say the same for the Nittany Lion performance this past season. Yes...Bobby Knight can be a miserable SOB.

I actually am probably one of the few that likes him, yes he's got a temper. But he is also very big on keeping his athletes in check and their egos down, not to mention many of his students graduate.

You look at his former students, and they all say he was hard, but that he was fair and they loved and respected him for it. I got the impression that for many, he was the father figure in their lives.

As far as losing in the NCAA tournament, being an alumni of Texas Tech, I'm quite impressed that he made it to the tournament with the players he had, in his first year.

Coach Knight took a Texas Tech basketball team that won only 9 games last year to a 23-9 record this year. He is also a current finalist for the Claire Bee "Coach of the Year" award. And how did those Nittany Lions do? : 7-21 in what may have been one of the worst college basketball programs in the country this year.

I like Knight too. It's not PC to do so, but you've got to give the guy credit. He runs a tight ship and has always had quality young men graduate from his program.

I have three graduate degrees from Indiana University. When I.U. got rid of Bobby Knight they also got rid of me. I don't especially care what the Hoosiers do in the final four.

Chalk me up as a former Indiana fan who went with Knight to Texas Tech - what a job he did there! And I especially like him since it is not PC to do so!

Indiana would not be what it is without his efforts there over 30 years - and the PC administration threw him out like garbage - I don't think you treat people like that. Another reason I am a former Indiana fan.

I don't defend the Penn State program. Jerry Dunn is possibly the worst coach in America, and I usually root for PSU to lose. That's the only way he'll be sent packing, and then the program can get back on track.

Knight's X's and O's are obviously quite sound. But his continual in-your-face assault for five months clearly wears on his players, leaving them with little/no gas in the tank come March. Coaches who understand how to manage their team for an entire season fare much better when it counts.

His off the court behavior is repugnant, and well documented. No need to discuss that any further.

See, there are a few of us Knight likers out there. What makes me a REAL anomoly is that I'm a Kentucky fan! IU was one of our arch enemies when Coach Knight was there. LOL

BTW, did you guys catch him on Sean Hannity's show today? Pretty good interview considering he was only on the show to plug his new autobiography.

I respectfully disagree - by your estimation then neither Kansas nor Oklahoma should be int the Final Four as they played in unquestionably the toughest conference in the country and should be worn out.

I'm speaking more of a "mental gas tank". Physically, athletes are remarkably resilient. Easing off for a couple or three weeks at the end of a 5-month season will result in near to full recovery of muscle fatigue. But you can't keep your thumb down on your athletes every day for five months and expect them to raise their play a notch when it counts. Allowing for a sense of perspective is a far better way to prepare athletes for a big game. If you don't believe me, ask Joe Torre.

Re #14

With Bobby Knight, there is no in-between. You either like him or hate him. If you like him, you could also die for him. He can inspire fierce loyalty from those who like him. In that sense, he is charismatic. Could have made a great field commander.

Isn't that why Maryland's done so well recently? They've always been a good program under Gary Williams (272-143 at Maryland), but it's my understanding that their best showings have come since he tempered his formerly Knight-like intensity. I notice that he's AP's ACC Coach of the Year, as well as Sportsline.com's national Coach of the Year.
