Nation: Body of abducted Louisiana girl found

The Associated Press

HATHAWAY, La. (March 29, 2002 9:23 p.m. EST) - The body of a 12-year-old girl was discovered Friday in a gully, a day after she was abducted from outside her home in southwestern Louisiana.

Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff Ricky Edwards would not say where exactly Holli Thibodeaux's body was found, nor how she died. Edwards declined to give any further details.

Dozens of FBI agents had joined the search Friday for Holli. She was abducted Thursday at the Hathaway Village Trailer Park after the driver of a pickup stopped to ask for directions to nearby Jennings, Edwards said.

The man grabbed Holli, threw her into his truck and drove north on Louisiana Highway 26, Edwards said.

Another girl who was with Holli ran and escaped.

The FBI released a composite sketch of the suspect and said they were looking for a light blue, full-sized pickup truck with a new silver toolbox and a red-and-yellow ladder in the back.

FBI agent Kenneth Kaiser said agents had several leads and had gathered evidence from the site, outside the trailer where Holli lived with her mother, Robyn Cormier, and a 16-year-old sister.

Family and friends gathered Thursday outside a high school for a prayer vigil with the family.

"It's not fair," said Halie Blanchard, a friend of Holli's in the fifth grade. "Why'd they have to pick her? I mean she didn't do anything wrong or anything."

Edwards said investigators also are looking into recent reports of attempted abductions in Eunice, 18 miles east of Hathaway, to see if any are similar to Holli's kidnapping.

Hathaway is about 30 miles east-northeast of Lake Charles.

Heartfelt prayers sent to the Thibodeaux family. I saw the father interviewed on local NBC affiliate KPLC last night. He is a volunteer firefighter, I believe. Holli was in her neighborhood, riding her bike. First day of Easter holidays here in SW LA.

Poor kid.

Years ago, here in Arkansas, we had a child about the same age abducted under the same conditons. Some guy in a "silver car" stopped and asked her directions, and grabbed her through the window, all in plain view of serveral witnesses who managed to get a description of the vehicle.

They searched the State with no results. UNTILL, the FBI finally tracked him down. He came from out of state, had rented a car at the airport, did his terrible act, and went back to the airport and flew back East.

They got him.

Sketch

Now the search shifts into high gear for the murder suspect. He is described as a white male, about six, one, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans. Police say he was driving a full size truck with a custom blue paint job. The truck had a silver tool box on the back with a red and white ladder.

How horrible. That poor child.
This country is losing more and more morality by the day.
How many more will die before America wakes up?
When will they see the Ten Commandments aren't "hate speech" or "oppresive rules?" They're common sence!

Well, it seems to me that life imprisonment

Life imprisonment is only 20 years you know. There are brutal murderers of children set loose in their 40's who will most likely kill again. The death penalty should be given to child murderers.

Give him death, or the lifetime the child would have had left. @65 years. He can die in prison.

This was all over the radio stations here yesterday...

My heart goes out to this little gal and her family. GOD only knows what kind of terror she was put through in her last hours here on earth, and the toll it must be taking on her parents.

I sincerely hope the scum who did this is found (by a pack of hungry, ill-tempered pit-bulls.)

You're right; "life" seldom means life. Yates' sentence to life in Texas means parole consideration at 40 years. Ironically, this approach makes sense. Death panalty advocates in Texas actually support the "life with parole at 40" because it ties the hands of future liberal governors who might be tempted to commute a death penalty sentence to "life" (and have to face the political fallout of doing so).

"Death" means death; no ambiguity.

I think that the death penality would be much more effective if carried out about 6 months (after one appeal) after conviction. Even these looney a$$holes would think twice.

Life imprisonment is only 20 years you know. There are brutal murderers of children set loose in their 40's who will most likely kill again. The death penalty should be given to child murderers.

We had a guy around here (Rochester, New York) named Arthur Shawcross. He murdered 2 children in Watertown (WAY up North). Was sentenced to - I'm not sure, I think it was 20 years. He served about 13 years and was released on parole.

He murdered 11 women before they put him away again. 11 consecutive terms of 25-to life. New York didn't have a death penalty at the time.

They had another guy in Texas named Ken McDuff, sentenced to death in 1969 (I think). When the Supreme Court endced the death penalty a few years later, McDuff's sentence was commuted to life. He got parole and murdered 7 women. He has since been executed.

McDuff will never commit murder again. I'm not as sure about Shawcross.

There is a 13-year-old Hispanic girl who was abducted a few weeks ago in Houston. As far as I know, she is still missing. Please pray for her, and for all abused or missing children.

I know a couple of who's daughter was abducted and murdered several years ago. I don't know how they go on. But they do. They even started a foundation that helps find missing and abducted children. When I see them it's so so sad. Their eyes always look like they just stopped crying.

There is a special place in hell for the devoids that prey on children.
