The sad, sad mind of a contemporary liberal.

I am a contemporary liberal. I am bitter, or guilty or both.

I have a worldview shaped not by knowledge but rather by self-serving emotions and self-righteousness.

I am solipsistic. I cannot comprehend the mindset of those who came before me. I do not see history as sequence of events. I cannot understand that those who lived in the past made what I consider mistakes because they did not think the way my contemporaries did.

I am a sophist. I speak about things with conviction when I do not understand the basic facts. I do not value opinions that differ from my own. I believe that I am always right even when it is clear to all that I am not.

Often times I am a hypocrite. I am often white and affluent. Though I claim to support those less fortunate than myself. I would no sooner walk in their neighborhoods, or invite them over for dinner because for me, claiming to care for them is enough. I often act this way out of guilt.

I hate myself.

I create fantasies. I often ignore or do not know the facts of history. However this does not stop me from distorting them to support my childlike idealism.

I create victims. I cannot comprehend certain people being evil. I immediately take the side of the people I consider to be the victim, regardless of how despicable this group is. I am obsessed with suffering. I judge people not on what they have achieved, but on how much they have endured.

I preach moral idiocy. I cannot see the big picture. I cannot perceive the greatness humanity can and has achieved, but a dwell upon all of its wrongdoings.

I am myopic.

I am irrational.

I am a fool.

I am a contemporary liberal.

I am a contemporary liberal

You are not a contemporary liberal. Introspection isn't allowed if your are a contemporary liberal. (Unless of course your looking for someone in your life to blame for your character flaws. )

Careful! I can see a lot of liberals adopting this creed and creating a sort of mind-control cult ala Scientology.

They might even start a political party, or something.

Get a Yahoo address if you're so intent on getting on DU. I think it's a waste of time myself. Consorting with brownshirts only makes you dirty.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Section9 (Chris) is right - as usual. Why waste your time with DU when you already know they can't think?

You have at least two reasons to feel good:

Government at all levels (Fed, State, Local) in the US takes a full 40% of national income from hardworking Americans - you only have 60% left to go!

The greediest - and largest - institution in World History, the US Federal government, takes in $2,100,000,000.00 per year and it wants - and it will get - more! No one can stop it! And no one is really even trying!

sigh!!

(1) Target practice.
(2) Keep my enemy demoralized.
(3) Indulge my inner reptile.

Great essay. You just need to alter the ending: "I am a contemporary moral-liberal libertarian."

Most excellent. Here's a brilliant quote from T. S. Elliott which was included in a letter to the editor published in this morning's Wall Street Journal. (The writer, a medical doctor, was referring to the Greens and the churches that let themselves be used by them, but the thought applies to many, many others):

"Half the harm in this world is done by people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm -- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves."

You missed:

I am unmotivated and lack direction in my life.

I changed my major in college 4 times or I dropped out of Berkley with 6 units left to get my English degree because it seemed like the right thing to do.

I've worked at more places than I can remember.

I have never been in a serious long-term committed relationship because I just haven't met the right person yet.

John Kennedy was the most wonderful man who ever lived.

Everything I know about politics I learned watching Rather, Chung, Oprah and Rosie.

West Wing is my favorite TV show.

Whether male or female, I routinely say "men are pigs."

That is an excellent and very true quote. I recently read a book called "Dreams of Spaceflight" by a guy named Wyn Wycroft. It is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in the Philiosphy of Science.
Anywhoo, In one of the chapters, the writer talks about the day Men walked on the moon. While most of the country was celebrating the most astonishing accomplishment of mankind, some liberals were complaining about how Nixon could have better spent the money on cleaning up the Potomac River. The author (who goes on a heroic tyraid on why liberalism is a "cancer" eating away at American society)quotes a news paper column that defended the moon landing:

"Out of such things as sewer treatment plants, liberal dreams are born."

It was from a column called "Earthbound Liberals" published in 7/69. For the life of me, I cannot remember the publication.
