Rep. Kennedy Reaches Settlement By Associated Press

April 12, 2002, 10:47 AM EDT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rep. Patrick Kennedy has reached a settlement with the Los Angeles airport security guard who claimed he shoved her in a confrontation over an oversized piece of luggage.

The deal was announced Friday in a written statement released by Kennedy's attorney. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

Security guard Della Patton had filed a lawsuit last year seeking unspecified damages over the argument at Los Angeles International Airport two years ago.

Kennedy had been rushing to catch a plane, and Patton tried to stop him from putting an oversized bag through an X-ray machine. A security videotape showed the congressman shoving Patton backward, jostling a metal detector archway.

Kennedy, 34, apologized in a statement released Friday.

"It was unfortunate that this situation occurred and I once again apologize for my actions," Kennedy said. "I am pleased that this matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties involved."

Patton's attorney, George L. Mallory Jr., did not immediately return a telephone call.

Kennedy, a Democrat and the son of Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, is seeking his fifth term in Congress in November. Copyright © 2002, The Associated Press

If he is innocent, as he has loudly proclaimed for two years, why was there a need for a settlement?

Security cameras are great in certain situations.

Yes. Either will do, if you are dealing with someone who is accustomed to lying in order to (try to) get away with bad behavior.

These days, we can pretty well assume you wouldn't get the chance to log in and tell us about it.

Let's revitalize this old thread to keep track of how much this "Representative" gets away with.

So he celebrated the settlement by getting drunk, driving around DC with no lights on at 3am and plowing into a security barrier?

Typical Kennedy slime.
