Noonan is right on the mark with this article.
Yet even this practice is open to life, it does not suppress or obliterate fertility, it accepts it and embraces it fully. And as our first born aptly illustrates, it is open to God's Will if He desires us to conceive at a particular time. My wife ovulated on the 7th day of her cycle when Mikey was conceived, something that never happened before or since. And it happened while we were on pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. If we had been using artificial methods Mikey would not be here, and our lives would be radically different.
Isn't Avery Dulles, sj, a cardinal and also invited? There appears to be some uncertainty...
His nickname among Roman Catholics is "A Very Dull SJ."
From the Washington ComPOST: The American cardinals will sit down in morning and afternoon sessions, meeting with three top Vatican officials: Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos of the Congregation for the Clergy, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re of the Congregation for Bishops..." "All 13 U.S. cardinals were invited to the meeting, but 81-year-old Cardinal James Hickey, the retired archbishop of Washington, was too frail to make the trip.
From the Communist News Network:
"The meeting April 23 and 24 will involve 11 U.S. cardinals -- eight cardinals traveling from the United States and three already stationed in Rome. The BEST explanation seems to be from the Moscow Times (really!):They will meet with three non-U.S. cardinals who lead what are known as Vatican congregations dealing with matters of clergy, bishops and doctrine. There was no mention of a meeting with Pope John Paul II, but it is widely believed the cardinals will see him..."
"A spokesman for the Baltimore archdiocese said the meeting was scheduled for April 23-24.See also, from NewsMax:The Vatican official said only the eight American cardinals in charge of an archdiocese will be involved in next week's talks. They are Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore, Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, Cardinal Adam Maida of Detroit, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Cardinal Edward Egan of New York, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua of Philadelphia and Cardinal Theodore McCarrick of Washington. But a spokeswoman for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Sister Mary Ann Walsh, said the conference's top two officials -- Bishop Wilton Gregory, the president, and Bishop William Skylstad, the vice president -- also will attend.
Cardinals usually are summoned to Rome only when new cardinals are named or for a conclave when a pope dies. A special meeting of cardinals from just one country is extraordinary. Only one similar meeting has been held before, said the Reverend Thomas Reese, editor of the Catholic magazine "America."
In 1989, the pope summoned all the American archbishops to discuss tensions between U.S. Catholics and the Vatican over issues such as remarriage for divorced Catholics and disregard for the church ban on artificial birth control..."
"...Some observers think that Pope John Paul II will have to remove some of the church's American hierarchy, possibly at the cardinal level, BBC reported Monday. The [New York] Times said the eight U.S. cardinals in charge of U.S. archdioceses are expected to attend the gathering next week in Rome. They are: William H. Keeler of Baltimore, Bernard F. Law of Boston, Francis E. George of Chicago, Adam J. Maida of Detroit, Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles, Edward M. Egan of New York, Anthony J. Bevilacqua of Philadelphia and Theodore E. McCarick of Washington.
Rounding out the baker's dozen of U.S. cardinals are two retired U.S. cardinals and three U.S. cardinals who do not head American sees..."
Amen.
