I'm coming in late to the thread -- I've been a huge Tull fan since 1973 -- just pre-ordered the new live album out on the 30th. I'm still looking for A Little Light Music. I downloaded several tracks of Little Light Music from napster. They sound wonderful, especially the tracks from TOOTRNR. I would like to find the CD though.
I'm about to head out today to grab the new live CD myself. The sound quality seems superb from the samples that I have heard.
Did you see Tull during the Passion Play tour? I understand that tour was unbelievable. Tull would play the entire Passion Play and then after they finished, some 40 minutes later, Ian would say, "And now for our second number".. I wish I could have seen that...
Was that you who called up Rockline and asked Tull about the remasters? A caller asked Ian when some of the old albums were going to be remastered, particularly "Stormwatch"... Nah..It couldn't have been you because they said the caller was from Lincoln, Nebraska and not the Left coast. Here is how Ian answered that very question:
Well that will be on the cards. Theres another three re-mastered reissues currently that Ive just approved. And I have yet another three sitting in my house that I havent actually had a chance to listen to yet. Theyve just come from Abbey Road studios where theyve been re-mastered in fantastic new twenty-four bit digital audio. So, were getting around to it.
EMI is gradually working through our entire catalogue. So, its all getting paid attention to, about three at a time. Three of the old ones are coming out later this year as re-masters. They really do sound a lot better. Its all very much worthwhile. So Im glad theyre paying that attention to it. I just have to sit and listen to them all yet again (laughing) and compare them to the nineteen eighties CD versions. So I kind of know that theyre better. I posted the full transcript of the Rockline show here:
Yes, my very first Tull concert was the 1973 Passion Play tour (I saw it in Seattle, and that very show was recorded and bootlegged, but the sound quality on that boot is not very good). It was very memorable, considering they played most of Thick as a Brick as well -- so they took up about an hour and half of the concert on two "songs". Had to be a beast on the band -- very few breaks (though some of the players appeared to take breaks during the course of those two pieces. The timing issues had to be huge!).
I see that A Little Light Music is available at hardtofindcds.com. They have a used copy for 35 dollars and a new copy for 45 dollars. I think it's worth this out of print gem. I think I'm going to buy the new one.
By the way, I have an official Tull live CD from 1991 at the Hammersmith, Odeon. The name of the CD is Jethro Tull in Concert. Tull performs several songs from Catfish Rising including 'Rocks on the Road'. The sound quality is excellent. If the version on A Little Light Music is better than all I an say is wow...
Those are all excellent points. I could not agree with you more. I believe you are right when you predict that two of the next remasters will be Aqualungand Thick as a Brick I am not so sure about Living in the Past. I noticed that tracks from Living in the Past have appeared on the first three remastered CDs, This Was, Stand Up and Benefit as bonus tracks. If my hunch is right, the five tracks from the 'Life is a Long Song' EP will appear on the Aqualung remaster as bonus tracks. Ian didn't mention the names of the three remastered CD's that he just approved. Do we really need another copy of Aqualung? Nope. The DCC Gold copy is quite good. I own all the Tull cd's recorded by mobile fidelity except Thick as a Brick. However, the 25th anniversary TAAB CD sounds great to me. I'm not dying to hear Brick or Aqualung remastered again?
Like you say, what about Too Old to Rock'n Roll or Minstrel in the Gallery or Stormwatch? None of these classics have been remastered on CD at all. Ian let Stormwatch go out of print totally which is a real disgrace. It looks like we will have to wait at least another year or so before he gets to them.
Oh yes..'Crew Nights'.. what a gem. Also 'Commons Brawl' is another favorite of mine. What a tough decision it had to be for Ian to decide which songs to put on the Broadsword album. Those sessions produced an awesome amount of great music. A double album should have been the answer. I guess these songs didn't pass Ian's test for one reason or another at the time.
Yeah, especially with your freeper name :) No exuses allowed at all..
You might have missed the show but you can still read the transcript of it here: Rockline Show Transcript
He's putting the 20th Anniversary Set tracks on this group of CD's as he's remastering them as well. Nice touch, but I'd prefer he just remaster and re-issue the 20th Anniversary Set...(though the sound quality on the 3-CD 20th Anniversary Set is pretty good).
Hmm..If it's true that he is going to add 20th Anniversary tracks to this group of remasters than maybe he will do Living in the Past in the next group after all. That would be interesting. I agree with you, I would like to see separate remasterings of LITP and 20th Anniversary. I would prefer some different songs, maybe some unreleased live tracks added to the remastered disks.
