Homeschool!

Homeschool graduate Shanna Post-Maher has been appointed Cadet Chief Engineer of Massachusetts Maritime Academy class of 2003. She is the first female, first homeschooler, and first dual-major cadet to be awarded the honor by the college.

Shanna received four-year scholarships from the National Rifle Association and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, by whom she was named a Tsongas Scholar in recognition of her academic achievements.

Receiving her engineering degree in 2003, Shanna will continue post-graduate studies, and receive a degree in Marine Transportation in 2004.

No affirmative action here; earned by merit.

Homeshoolers are bustin' barriers everywhere, and I wanted to help spread the good news.

Workin' on big engines and steering giant ships....

This is, I think, true woman's liberation.

Wow. Scholarships from the National Rifle Association AND the state of Massachusetts. Now there's some cognitive dissonance!

That is great! (Now if she's really smart, she'll move away from People's Republic of Massachusetts the first chance she gets).

All right Shanna!! I'm going to a Conference for Homeschool Support Group Leaders in a couple of weeks here in MA. I'll ask around to see if any of the folks know the family.

My thought EXACTLY on seeing this. I would have thought those were mutually exclusive categories.

Family values. Homeschooling can be the foundation on which a whole lifetime of achievement is built. I don't believe that public school can hold a candle to it, if the homeschooling is handled right.

No, of course not, she can't possibly be socialized until she's gulped a few ecstasies, toked a few joints, acquired a venereal disease and had a couple of abortions like our public high schools students do.

I was just informed that we have to prove that we are homeschooling to take the state test this year. I was stunned when I was informed of this little detail. How are we to prove it you ask? Either a copy of our HSLDA card or a copy of our curriculum receipt.

It appears that the state is upset that the home schoolers are trouncing their public school darlings in their own test. They believe that we are somehow cheating on their test.

I love it! This is like proving to Hitler that you are Jewish.

What I personally love about this article is that this is proof of succesfull teaching and learning by two people not in anyway connected to the NEA or their programmed education standards.

Indeed it is. And it sort of puts a damper on the stereotype that homeschoolers are all religious wackos who want to keep women barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen. If that's what Shanna's parents were aiming for, they sure missed bad!

Wow ! Excellent !

As we homeschoolers here in Pennsylvania fight for a new, less-restrictive law, it is heartening to see such success stories -- thanks for passing it along !

I think now may be the best time to HS -- and I fear the time is dwindling fast. That recent article about spelling bees (where HSers have become dominant) is a chill breeze of things to come.

HSers will dominate Government-schooled kids in area after area, and the Statelings will react.

The NEA and their co-dependents will search tirelessly for ways to prevent, corrupt, control, legislate, regulate, and otherwise pervert and prevent homeschooling.

Why? Because HOMESCHOOLING WORKS, and because HOMESCHOOLING GIVES THE LIE TO STATISM!

Now we're a quaint oddity. Soon, we will be a THREAT..

Mark my words.

I do believe you're right, BibChr. I think it's sooner than later though. The NEA already considers homeschoolers a threat and are making headway slowly but surely in an underhanded fashion.

That's one reason why, whether we feel the personal need or not, ALL HSers must be members of HSLDA or some equivalent HSing organization who has watchdogs constantly attending to legislation, able to alert and mobilize the troops and oppose the probably-ultimately-inexorable (as I read Revelation 13, etc.) march of the statists.

That is no reason to lay down and die, or let our kids die. While we're here, we must fight; it's our stewarship. That one really is "for the children."

Wow! Been a while since I posted this....

Lessee......she graduated summa cum in '03, magna for the deck degree in '04, passed Coasties, is a Merchant Marine officer with dual licenses, and is currently engineer on a funky ocean tug out of NY harbor. Had much better offers, but she prefers the laid-back life on a small, old 140' boat. She found her bliss, mug o' joe in-hand, puttering around off the east coast pulling barges, and enjoying the scenery. Gets along fine with the crew. She brings the fellas by the house now and then...fine bunch of lads. Thought you might like to know how things wound up! Been a long time!
