Goose Gossage was the scheduled starter in the nightcap. He was warming up in the bullpen when the fans started coming out of the bleachers onto the field.
A lot of them went through the bullpen. Goose told me he was ripping 100 mph fastballs when, suddenly, his catcher got knocked ass over teakettle.
He got the ball back and was winding up again...when he saw a fan with a make-believe bat standing in a make-believe batter's box. Goose did a double-take...then nailed him in the ribs with a batting practice fastball.
According to Goose, everybody very nearly fell down laughing...
He didn't miss making the start in the second game. It was too good a show to miss.
So what’s with the “streamlined” looks on baseball and football helmets these days? Are they meant to be aerodynamic? Does wind resistance matter at 13 mph?
