GOOD QUOTE - This pretty much says it all about terrorism
The Federalist ^ | Fred Reed

Posted on 05/20/2002 9:50:23 AM PDT by CreekerFreeper

"Overwhelmingly the terrorist have been Mohammadean males, moody representatives of a dysfunctional civilization that peaked in the twelfth century and knows it. Now, since these loons are known to be very high risks for blowing things up, it might make sense to focus on them in searches. Ah, but this would be profiling. It might offend terrorists. So we randomly search people we know not to be terrorists, thus avoiding profiling. See? It's like losing your watch under a street light, but looking for it in a dark alley."

Sorta like getting an APB / BOLO "for a white male, 6'4", 260lbs, 20-25 years old, driving a green Chevrolet" but only pulling over 4'5", 80lb, 80-year grandma's in red Cadillacs.

There is a problem with profiling in such a narrow way. It prompts the terrorists to enlist people who don't fit the profile to do their dirty work. For example, now, female terrorists are blowing themselves up. And there are plenty of non-Arab American sympathizers who may be willing to volunteer to commit terrorist acts. It's foolish to look only in one direction, then we get hit from behind.

Well, until they show me a non-Muslim terrorist, I'll accept the idea that we should target Islamic-oriented peoples, male or female.

If you have an idea of who the non-Arab Americans who would do this would be, please let us know.

This would be worth placing on card stock and handing to Airport Security Screeners as they are rifling through your bags while the arabic guy behind you walks freely down the jetway to his seat.

It's naive to think there are no more American Taliban out there. Think the guy we caught is the only one?

There is a problem with profiling

Well I am not flying until they start profiling (and arm pilots). I have no intention of waiting in long lines while they take knitting needles from little old ladies. If many people feel the same way I do (and there are many) then the airline industry will not recover until they use some common sense.

It ain't the airlines (or the companies doing the screening). I recently sat next to a gentleman whose family owns one of the largest screening companies. He knows perfectly well what would make for effective screening, but the government has rules in place that he is forced to swallow. He suspects this will continue till we lose some more planes, and possibly some really large buildings.

This can be seen by the fact that many people piled on the airlines and their security companies for allowing the hijackers to board, when in fact the screeners on 911 functioned exactly as they were supposed to. Even the knives that were carried on board were perfectly legal.

Nobody had any legal right to stop the hijackers from boarding. That was not a failure of those operating the security system, it was a failure of those who designed it. And we are still seeing the same nonsense today.

Ah, but now they are (or will be soon) fed employees. And they will be watching all your moves. Feel safer now? Thought so,

Not particularly. I believe at least many of them will be employed by contractors. It's just that the contractors will be paid by the feds. Tho I could be wrong. I was once...

The solution to Islamic (Arab) mad bomber threat is very simple-round up all Muslims (Arabs) and deport them before they have an opportunity to explode in some crowded place. To h*ll with who gets offended !

There is one possible alternative solution: All Muslim/Arabs who wish to avoid deportation must agree to live in glass houses with no drapes or shades and never venture outside their homes except when they are buck naked.

American's lives and our survival is under assault here. We know from whence the threat comes. Why the h*ll should we risk everything for the sake of not offending a group from which we know beyond the shadow of a doubt, our snakeish assailants will come? Playing the politically correct game is not worth the life of one American.

I think after 911 the public would have been willing to accept so called profiling without a peep.
If this PC attitude doesn't stop, we will never be safe again.

The Unabomber, van der Graaf, ALF, ELF, you get the idea. However, there is a "profile" for these types, too.

The security system was designed to keep firearms off airplanes. As far as it goes, it worked.

It would perhaps have been better if it had been designed to keep weapons off airplanes.

As I said earlier, the system worked as planned. The system was obviously not adequate to achieve its goals. The fault lies with those who designed the system, not those who were running it.

Short of strip-searching all the passengers, there is no way to prevent knives which are much nastier than box-cutters from making it onto aircraft. After all, knives which can evade metal detectors are stone-age technology.

The real weapon terrorists had, though, was the crew and passengers' years of indoctrination that one should acquiesce to hijackers. Fortunately, that weapon has been pretty well shot to pieces and will not reappear within living memory.

But now they don't even have to bother enlisting non-Arab looking lunatics. The point of profiling is precisely to make things more difficult for the likes of al Qaeda. Nobody says it's foolproof, just that it's common sense. See Ann Coulter's column today for a fine rant on this subject.

And when they go outside of their organizations for new terrorists, they become easier to infiltrate and track. I'd count that as a victory.
