That's a NRA chamber flag. The shaft goes directly into the chamber. I always make sure I didn't drop it in the dirt before I put the flag in. It's a mandatory part of the equipment at the High Power matches. At the end of the stage, the safety officer will yell out, Mags out, safeties on, flags in, before anyone can go downrange.

The lower target is the one that we use for the reduced 100 yard course to simulate the 300 yard standing to prone rapids. The completely black center is easier to see with iron sights.
To: Shooter 2.5
Yeah, the white center is kind of annoying. I dont see why folks shouldnt be allowed to magic-marker in the center, doing so without obscure the scoring rings. Maybe use a red marker.
SR-21 is from my last match, score 83. Two tens are covered by the ruler (really!). Now if I can just get that group all in the black I'd score 90.

I'm like you. I'm not sure what to expect out of a .22 at 100 yds. I'll be using a stock Ruger 10/22 after I take the scope off. I'm sure glad to see alot of old mispec pieces. I have an old Nagant 7.62 x 54 and a Marlin levergun in 45-70. I think the Ngant may beat the 45-70. All my other centerfires don't have iron sights. I may try to borrow something a little more accurate for centerfire. I do have pretty low expectations since I haven't tried or practiced 100 yd open sight.

Re: .17 Hornady Rimfire...
Ah ok. I saw an "actual size" pic on the cover of American Rifleman, man that thing was tiny. I'm curios as to how they act, ever shoot one?
Check out the "Magnum" forum at Rimfire Central, they've had active discussion of the new cartridge since it was announced. A few of the guys who post there have already rechambered their Ruger 10/22 Magnums for the new .17 (Ruger should be paying those guys for all the R&D).
The above linked site started out as a Ruger 10/22 discussion board and is still primarily that - but other rimfire-related discussion is welcome.

I got an old winchester lever .22 I've had since I was a kid, and I'll be plinking in the backyard this weekend to see if I can hit a paint can at 100 yards. I got an even older bolt .22 I may try out.
That Mosien Ngant could be quite accurate, I'd expect more so than than the 45-70.

Yeah, a Garand match would be fun. On the other hand, I don't happen to have one, and I've got a feeling I'd have to get a new wife before I get another new gun. Well, there should be no problem then. The Garand is just an old, used gun. It may be described as many things, but never as "new"! ;-) You must realize that it is your patriotic duty to remove at least one of said rifles (Rifle, U.S., Caliber .30, M1) from the possession of the United States government. :^)
In the meantime, do you have a bolt-action military rifle, such as a Mauser, Mosin-Nagant or Enfield? Perhaps we could do an "old battle rifle" match, apart from a Garand-specific match. I think that many more people have an old bolt gun hanging around the house. A range down in southwest Mississippi has been hosting bolt-action battle rifle matches for a few years now and the format seems very popular. The winning scores often come from the ugliest rifles on the firing line, too. It is always interesting to see what kind of hardware turns up at the range.
To: Jerry_M
Sure, I'll go shoot the match with you out at Zia!
To: Charles Martel
In the meantime, do you have a bolt-action military rifle, such as a Mauser, Mosin-Nagant or Enfield?...sigh... Not at the moment, but I used to have an old Enfield .303 that was quite accurate after I put in a paper shim to tighten the fit between receiver and stock. But, like so many "gun nuts," what I've traded away over the years would stock quite an armory. :)
Uhh ... I've tried the "old/used" ploy too many times already. If it's "new" to me, it's new according to my wife.
I can tell you how to get a new bird dog puppy into the house, though. Always works, no matter how many times you use it.

Shooters- targets got mailed
today. Sent by US Priority mail , claims 2-3 days delivery, so you should see them by the end of the week. Everybody PLEASE post on this thread when you receive them. IF everybody gets them by this Saturday, I'll set the return postmark date to Monday, July 1st.
Save the return address (mine), that is where you will return your targets, using the same method, Priority Mail.
Your package contains 6 targets (described above). The rules are described in this thread. Post any questions/concerns/issues to this thread and ping me and Shooter 2.5 for resolution.
Good Luck Shooters! Targets with visible powder burns will be disqualified ;^)
To: CapandBall
If it's not critical that July 1st is the return date, them why don't we push that date off until the Saturday following the long July 4th weekend?
The four-day holiday weekend should give everyone a chance to get their range time in, and would put a patriotic touch on this whole shootin' match.
Thanks for your time!
To: CapandBall
Thank You, I know how much effort is involved.
As for the USPS, all delivery times for anything other than Express Mail, are estimates. Meaning: "We probably will try real hard to get it there about when we should, but we won't guarantee the darn thing will be delivered at all"
To: The KG9 Kid; CapandBall; chookter
I second the motion. A postmark date of July 8 is A-OK with me. chookter and myself have tentatively scheduled a trip to the range on June 21, but just in case something comes up it would be nice to know that the long July 4th weekend is available.

Not a bad idea, lets wait and see how long it takes for folks to receive their targets.
To: Jerry_M
Monday, July 8th seems like a better date and will give everyone a long weekend to work with. I'd say if everyone gets their targets within the next week we should go with that date. If USPS takes longer than that, we may have to adjust. In the last match (using regular mail) some delivery took two plus weeks!
To: CapandBall
Will let you know when they arrive.
To: CapandBall; Lion Den Dan
Sounds good, but if they don't arrive by Friday, it'll have to wait until we get back from our vacation around the middle of June. Leaving on Saturday. I'm guessing that the 4th of July weekend is going to look really good from my perspective (I've got too much experience with the Post Office...) :)

A postmark date after the 4th, July 8 or 9 (always pushing for that extra day) would be nice. As a weekend shooter, alternate at best, it give me some extra days.
I assume I'm the Il off your list. I only shoot in Wi (dumb IL laws). Maybe ping the other WI shooter for me? Could get together.
"Match" rifles were clear to me at first, but in a high caliber context. Reading the thread, I was planning on using an elderly Rem 513T for the rimfire. Is that OK?

Reading the thread, I was planning on using an elderly Rem 513T for the rimfire. Is that OK?Sorry, a 513S for sporter would have been all right but not when it's a 513T MatchMaster. The Remington 513T has a heavy match barrel. No match rifles, no match ammo.
