Want to get a little rifle practice? I am assuming that you have a couple of weapons that meet the criteria.

You're thinking about a rimmed cartridge. The rules for the .22 are for a rimfire cartridge where the primer solution is internally poured into the space inside the rim. The rules for the centerfire ammo is ball ammunition only. Nothing in this contest can be Match Ammunition.

Cuffed slings are two piece slings where the belt goes back and forth to the rifle and then at the arm there is a very wide "cuff" that attaches to the belt. The cuff will have a rubber interior to grab the rubber on the shooting jacket. The rubber to rubber contact with the extra wide surface stops the cuff from shifting. The hook on the jacket stops the belt from slipping down. Now you can see why none of this is legal in this match.

Oh.. Thanks. My 8mm has just an old narrow leather sling that is about one inch wide for the entire length. I don't own a shooting jacket... so I guess I'm ok there.

The cuffed sling is at the front of the mat. To give you and everyone else an idea about this match, nothing in this picture is legal except the timer.

I know the difference between rimless, rimmed, and rimfire but I thought the .303 was a rimfire.

I'm too cheap to buy match grade stuff anyway but when I start reloading maybe I'll fiddle with making some.

Please put me on the bang list for something like this for centerfile rifles and pistols.

I don't have anything in .22 except a little target pistol.

The only difference in .303 is that it might be Bredan primed instead of Boxer primed. The ammo store that I frequent has some metric designated .303 British. I forgot what the numbers are and I can't find the piece of brass that started my search as to who sold the stuff in my area.

The .303 is a "rimmed" cartridge, but it is not rimfire. It is a centerfire. The 30-30 is another "rimmed" cartridge, but also centerfire.

He might've been thinking of the Berdan-primed brass, which is usually discarded like rimfire cases. If you're referring to a .303, it is most assuredly a centerfire.

20 >big ern
21 >glasseye

This is a few more than I had planned, but thats OK. To those who didnt get to me in time, sorry - we'll do it again I'm sure.

I'll need to run to my gun shop and get a few more targets, and I can't do that till friday. Barring unforseen calamities, the targets will be in the mail friday afternoon, so you should see them sometime next week.

If anyone is having 2nd thoughts or realizes now they don't have access to a 100 yard range or the required two firearms, let me know. I expect to give everybody appx. 1 month to shoot and get their targets back to me.

Good luck shooters, I'm looking forward to this. I got my clock cleaned in the pistol shoot so I'm looking for an oppotunity to redeem myself. ;^)

Not by me...any bragging I could do would be based on glass or match sights, and match ammo...the rules of this match leave me with A1 sights on an SP1 and the stock Ruu..Ruu..Ruger blade sight on a 10/22...

It will be humbling at the least...but I wouldn't miss it...

OK Postal match shooters, I'm preparing my print label postal mailing list. The following need to freep mail me info:

glasseye - give me a zip code
Tailback - give me a name to address your targets to.
ricer1 - confirm you understand you will need two (2) rifles.

Some interesting stats, participants by state:
CA 3
KY 2
NM 2
NY 2
TX 2
VA 2
AZ 1
GA 1
IL 1
LA 1
MI 1
NC 1
OR 1
WA 1
WI 1

This looks like a very good cross-section of Freepers!

Who is the other New Mexican?

If they are in Albuquerque, maybe we could get together and keep each other "honest". I am a member of the Zia Rifle & Pistol Club, and would have no problem taking a guest, even if that other person is not a member.

As far as not using match ammo, I will be using surplus M2 ball (LC69) in the Garand, and the $8.65 for 455 rounds Federal stuff from Walmart in my 10/22.

Cap, I am beginning to think that the winner of the rimfire & iron sights 100 yards category could be someone using a 16-gauge shotgun with #6 buckshot and an extremely choked barrel. :D

chookter is the other New Mexican. Be advised, he shot high rimfire aggregate in the pistol match.

By the way, I'll be shooting the exact same ammo as you.

M1911 is my VA neighbor, and he has the the 100+ yard range we will be shooting at. I only have about 60 yards clear, further than that and I have to shoot into or out of the woods.

I'll be sending the targets tomorrow. As folks receive them, please ping me and the list. Once everybody has received them, I'll pick a date about 1 month in advance that they are to be returned by.

I will include instructions, to ensure everybody is clear on the rules. In the meantime, post any other questions or concerns here and we can discuss them. I'm relying on shooter 2.5 to help me with questions, as he helped me come up with the rules for this match.

You can count on me. The idea is to let everyone have a fair chance at this. That's why we came up with the easiest possible equipment. This might even spark someone's interest in High Power Rifle so that they can get a chance to get the goodies from the CMP.

I did get a bit of bad news from the CMP. The rifle that I ordered is sold out. Since it was ordered on the Seventh, I still may get one of the last ones. I ordered the 1903A3 Remington high number with the "C" stock. A "C" Stock has the pistol grip and the "S" is straight.

I would like a clarification on Rule 6a:

Would a Mossberg M44US be considered a rimfire match rifle? If so, no problem - I have another iron-sighted rimfire rifle. I was considering using the Mossberg, but since it has a micrometer peep sight and a bit heavier barrel, it kind of approaches "match rifle" - well, except for the trigger (no accessory rail or hand stop, either). I thought I'd ask and let you make the call.

I have a very suitable 100 yard plus range in the Elizabethtown KY area. Also about 45 miles from Louisville air port. If any of you shooters are in this area and have no access to a range, you are welcome here. No charge for this shoot.

Regards,

Dan

Mossberg M44US rifles are match grade. A poor match grade but still a heavy barreled match rifle. That's why I can't use mine. Again, anything that has a heavy Match barrel to it is being considered a match rifle. That goes for the replacement heavy barreled 10/22's.

Three problems with that:

1) Overly complicated and thus more prone to failure.

2) Battery operated. The simplex lock on the R&D safe is 100% mechanical.

3) You don't want to be talking in the dead of night if a goblin is wandering around inside your house.

I must confess, I don't recall ever having shot a .22 at a target 100yds away. I'd better get practicing...

FYI to all, the target we are using is an SR-21. it is appx 12 inches in diameter. The 10 ring is appx 2" in diameter, and the rings are spaced appx 1" apart down to the 5 ring. At 100 yards, the black (8, 9, and 10 rings) area is barely bigger than a speck to my eyes.

Ive got my Garand pretty well zeroed for 100 yards, and I can hold a 5 inch group, but I still have trouble keeping that group centered around the X. I have no idea what to expect in the way of bullet drop for a .22lr out of a 20+ inch barrel, nor do I know what kind of MOA accuracy to expect. Time will tell...

I expect to make a good group with my centerfire.

... Whether or not it'll be anywhere on paper is a different story.

I'm not going to be swabbing my barrel between shots, either. Just going to start cold and finish hot.

I bet the offhand relay results will be amusing. I think the winner should be the person who can get more than two prints on target.

For the rimfire I'll be shooting a Remington 745 autoloader (I think that's the model #), and for the centerfire it'll either be a Winchester 94 in 30/30 or a Marlin carbine in .357 mag, depending on which one is better zeroed by then. Just your basic squirrel and deer guns. This should be interesting.

'Course, no one should be concerned about any squirrel hunters from Kentucky... ;^)
