Thanks for the Ping. :) Another wonderful article and suberb analysis from Mrs Noonan. This President may, indeed, have a date with Mt Rushmore. He makes me so proud.

We can only hope that should you ever experience a moment of happiness in your life that you will stop by to tell us all about it. We'd not only be happy for you but we'd be totally amazed as well.

I believe Bush is sincere. He seems to think though, that we have a lot of time on our hands in this thing.

What Mr. Bush is saying is simple: We will not back down, we cannot back down, we cannot ignore this threat and survive. He asks each nation of Europe to make "hard choices" about financial commitments to help the war on terror. He calls for the protection of Israel, the creation of a state for the Palestinian people; he insists peace in the Mideast is possible, points to old hatreds in Europe in which foes became partners and allies. He says that "poverty doesn't create terror--yet terror takes root in failing nations that cannot police themselves or provide for their people." And so we must help--through trade expansion, and humanitarian aid. "We have a duty to share our wealth generously and wisely."

Well said! Another excellent article by Peggy Noonan. Thanks for the ping, John.

Thanks so much for the ping. We'll have to wait and see how the Euroweenie elites react to Pres. Bush. I'm sure they'll sniff at his ideas and words; they are SO wise, you understand!

after his new FBI director told Americans to get ready to be blown to smithereens, because we can't do anything about it,

That's not what he said. At all.

and Cheney said the terrorists have us beat and will kill millions of us with NBC warfare, and we can't do anything about it

And that's not what Cheney said, either. Not even close.

Hint: Cheney was saying, "they'll keep trying, and we'll keep trying to stop them -- we'll have successes, but sooner or later they'll slip one past us and they'll succeed at another attack."

That's pure pragmatism -- only a fool would believe, or say, that we can and will stop every future attack.

That's a far cry from "the terrorists have us beat". To grasp the difference, consider the difference between killing more Americans, versus killing our resolve, our country, or our way of life.

As soon as you have a better grasp of current events, and current dynamics, do feel free to come back and try again.

At the risk of starting trouble, and without seeking to be mean-spirited, I can't for the life of me understand the passion some FReepers feel for Ann Coulter. I like Coulter as a writer, and she's not a bad looking woman, but at fifty, Noonan is still one of the world's great beauties, and her writing is as lovely as her countenance.

What you're missing is that it's not an either-or choice. We can have "passion" for *both* ladies. :-)

With plenty left over for Laura Ingraham...

This was a wonderful speech, but it is even better when Peggy explains the subtleties.

Sorry, Dano, but it really is an either-or choice. I'm reminded of what Frank Sinatra's first wife, Nancy, said some thirty years after divorcing Frank, on why she had never remarried: once you've had the best, none of the rest measure up. (No, I'm not claiming I've "had" Miss Noonan!)

Book'em, Dano!

Pokey, I always search for Peggy's columns, so thanks for posting this.

Thanks a mil for the ping, John.

Perfectly said, 'fraid. She's been a speech writer for President(s) and she knows the subtleties well.

And to Jesse - pffffft! until you can come aboard with something positive and/or constructive

Thanks for a Great Post.

I think Peggy Noonan may be the most clear and powerful writer in the business.

The excerpt below shows this U.S. - European history with a great anecdote about American soldiers who gave their lives to save Europe: (The Times (London) 2/19/02 Irwin Stelzer)

"America’s special relationship with Britain is often contrasted with its ambiguous relationship with France. The story making the rounds is a reminder of Lyndon Johnson’s response to then-President Charles de Gaulle’s demand that America remove its soldiers from French soil."
"At Johnson’s instruction, his Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, inquired whether the demand applied to those buried in military cemeteries in France. Michael Barone, one of Washington’s leading pundits, says that Rusk once told this story to a young Donald Rumsfeld. No one doubts that the Defense Secretary remembers it."

Jesse, what about the next time?

It's coming, you know it is.
I know it is and GW knows it is.
Certainly the terrorists know it is.

Better figure out where you will stand by then.
