Strange, the loops that history has made since this time last year, when Memorial Day brought a fusillade of TV specials arrayed around the premiere of the megabucks movie "Pearl Harbor" (more than six months before the actual 50th anniversary). The movie flopped, but it was lauded, not least on TV, for special effects so realistic they brought us right into the scene of the 1941 sneak attack.

But it is time to look -- and remember

I agree. Too many people have gone back to sleep. The images we saw were sanitized. We need to be reminded of the raw horror of that day.

The line that will always stick in my memory, is the interview of one Lady that had climbed down several flights of stairs and made it out before the first tower fell.

She spoke of the difficulty of getting out of the building. . . and getting around "...all of the piles of Blood..." - -- -

. . . then the truth actually hit her, as she remembered that blood doesn't "Pile Up". . . the shear horror/terror that enveloped her was more than she could bear.

From the HBO website -

IN MEMORIAM: NEW YORK CITY, 9/11/01

It began as an ordinary late-summer day and ended as a day that changed the world forever. This powerful documentary provides a historical record of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 through a uniquely personal collection of video and still photographs shot by more than 100 people in and around New York City. The film follows the Honorable Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and his senior staff from their first realization of the unbelievable tragedy that had occurred, through the despair and tears they experienced, to a newfound strength that would emerge in the spirit of a new America.

Airing - Sunday, May 26, 9:00 pm Eastern
and Tuesday, May 28, 10:00 pm Eastern

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to add HBO just for this special. It'll be worth it. I hope they release it on DVD.

It's important that we remember 9/11, but it's also important that we draw the right lessons from it. This film will be counterproductive if it leads to more calls for banning fingernail clippers and generally making flying less convenient and making Americans more passive. The attacks succeeded because the terrorists figured out that Americans have been conditioned to a level of passivity that we would not attack five guys with crude weapons even though we had overwhelming numerical superiority. If we had counterattacked immediately on every plane, only a few people would have died that day. No, we didn't know that the terrorists would use the planes as missiles, but why would you want to be paraded around the world as some thug's trophy when you have the ability to turn his boxcutter into the world's largest suppository? We must attack Muslim extremists until they are dead or until they withdraw their jihads and fahtwas against us.

The... murderers!

I would hope the documentary film makes it crystal clear WHO the murders were, where they came from, what their false-prophet diabolical religion was.

I would further hope it shows Guliani turning down the blood-soaked donation offer, from the prince of the desert wasteland kingdom, where most of them came from.

"We have to cry, we have to mourn," he says, but "every time you cry, you have to remember that we're right and they're wrong."

This bears repeating.

Blood can pile up. And I'm not talking just low mounds. It can make tall skinny towers. It's kinda freaky.
