Would Mohamed Atta object to armed pilots? (Ann Coulter)

Would Mohamed Atta object to armed pilots?

In a new safety initiative, the Department of Transportation has instituted an affirmative-action program for Arabs interested in pursuing careers in aviation. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta explained the security advantages of the program, saying, "surrendering to discrimination makes us no different than the terrorists."

Since you can't tell these days: This is not, in the strict sense, true. It is true, however, that the department has prohibited pilots from carrying guns and has rejected the idea of a "trusted traveler" program. In fact, it's not doing anything to make the airlines any safer. This should come as no surprise, inasmuch as Mineta recently said he was unaware of any "specific" threat against aviation.

They hate us. They're trying to kill us. They use airplanes as weapons. If Mineta doesn't talk to his boss, can't he at least read the papers?

In congressional testimony last week, Mineta mercifully spared the senators a recap of his experience in a Japanese internment camp and allowed his assistant, longtime Bush crony and ATF apologist John Magaw, to explain the department's key security improvements. The reason Magaw decided to prohibit pilots from having guns is – and I quote – "they really need to be in control of that aircraft."

This is literally the stupidest thing I've heard in my entire life.

It is like saying women walking home late at night in dangerous neighborhoods shouldn't carry guns (or mace, for the gunphobic) because they "really need to be getting home." If the undersecretary for transportation security thinks we need to debate whether pilots "really need to be in control of the aircraft," someone other than him really needs to be in control of airline security.

The scenario under which a gun might become useful for a pilot is this: The hijackers have penetrated the locked cockpit and thwarted air marshals, passengers and crew. It's going to be difficult for the pilot to fly the plane after the cockpit has been stormed by Arabs. Whatever could go wrong at that point – a wounded passenger, a hole in the side of the plane, terrorists wresting control of the gun – is better than the alternative.

Ah, but Magaw is worried that the terrorists will now have a pistol. Think of havoc they could wreak with a gun. Of course, they'll also have a Boeing 767 careening at 480 miles per hour toward the nearest landmark building. Magaw seems to think the real danger is that terrorists will shoot at the White House from a window, not that they'll fly the plane into it.

Magaw is the worst kind of government bureaucrat. He defends fascistic government abuses – but the trains still don't run on time. Fascism is at least supposed to keep the citizenry safe.

As the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Magaw famously justified an unprovoked government assault against Randy Weaver and his family, culminating in the murder of Weaver's wife. In testimony before a Senate committee investigating the raid at Ruby Ridge, Magaw stubbornly refused to admit the ATF had done anything wrong whatsoever.

Indeed, he even refused to acknowledge a jury verdict finding that the government had entrapped Weaver. Of the jury's verdict, Magaw said: "Do you believe Randy Weaver – or do you believe the federal agents who have sworn to tell the truth and are carrying out a career in this government?"

If only airline pilots worked for the government! Then Magaw would not only allow them to tussle with terrorists, but they would also be free to gun down innocent Americans without criticism. (The Senate report found Magaw's testimony not credible and recommended abolition of his entire agency.)

Magaw's other airline safety improvement was to reject the idea of a "trusted traveler" program, which would allow passengers to avoid three-hour airport security lines after submitting to an intrusive background check by the government. As reported by the New York Times, Magaw spurned the trusted traveler idea on the ground that "he is not sure who could safely be given the card."

I don't know, how about ... NO ARABS? (Religion-of-Peace Update: As they prepare to stone a rape victim to death in Pakistan, the latest suicide bombing in Israel claimed the lives of a 70-year-old woman and her 18-month old granddaughter.)

Amazingly, President Bush has actually found someone even dumber than Norman Mineta to secure the nation's airlines. The secretary of transportation is the only person on the face of the globe who thinks the airlines face no terrorist threat, and his deputy – by his own admission – hasn't the first idea which airline passengers can be "trusted."

If these guys were doing their jobs right, Congress would be reining them in, civil libertarians would be screaming, and professional ethnic complainers would be holding candlelight vigils and singing "We Shall Overcome." Instead, Congress is forced to pass laws overruling Mineta and Magaw, civil libertarians are scratching their heads wondering why profiling is prohibited, and professional complainers are sending them flowers.

Maybe somebody else should be doing this job.

OOOH! I LIKE this idea. Hmmmm. "Would Mohamed Atta be in favor of more immigration? Would Mohamed Atta be in favor of the new "family unification act"? Would Mohamed Atta be in favor of free money for illegal immigrants? Would Mohamed Atta be in favor of our current policy of kissing up to the Saudis? Oh, I really, really LIKE this angle. This is one of those great questions we can use to seriously skewer the liberals. Just ask if the issue at hand would be supported by Mohamed Atta. Sure, it's dirty and unfair. Just like what they do every day. It's time we started using some dirty logic and innuendo against the demon rats.

This Mineta is the Bush tribute to "diversity" - Democrat, pseudo-liberal, crypto-socialist masquerading as a victim. Time for a performance review, I would say. And quietly relegating somebody to a back room somewhere.

I really really LIKE this idea

No $hit. When Atta gets old, we could just insert Osama, Arafat, Mullah Omar.

The possibilities are endless.

Would Osama bin Laden approve of the Senate Democrats killing the drilling in ANWR, which could replace Saudi crude imports for thirty years?

Would the al Qaeda leaders who have designs on Pakistan's nuclear missles approve of the USA's creating a missle defense system?

Ann Coulter is, once again, deadly accurate with her attack on the current administrations idiotic policies. And what is John Magaw doing there!? He should be in jail, not testifying before Congress about airline safety and why American citizens shouldn't carry guns to protect themselves. Wasn't he a Clinton appointee!? Why hasn't anyone shown him the freakin' door!!?

This is not funny. I recently just saw the HBO special on 9/11 that showed never shown footage of people plunging to their deaths from the Towers. I can't believe that These people still have their jobs. I am disgusted with Bush. I am disgusted that is going to take another horrific event before these evil (and that is what they are) PC left wing beuacrats in our government are overruled or fired and we initiate obvious and sane security controls.

I was on a flight to Nantucket out of Logon this past Holiday weekend. It was a puddle jumper. A nine seat prop plane. There was no way anyone could take control of this flight given the space involved or do much damage even if they did! But we went through the same security procedures as everyone else.

We had to flash our ID's three times. Like that is going to do something. Terrorists are not going to have proper fake IDs! But it only gets worse. My friend and I walked right past the gate and almost had access to the tarmac - we realized out mistake and went back to the gate where we were met by two "guards". They had two guards posted for a flight of nine passengers on a small prop plane! But further both guards were overweight fat morons. When they saw us walking back to the gate from the stairwell they asked how we got past them. We said they were not there yet and we were told to. They said no- that we must have "slipped" by them on purpose. We laughed and got back in line.

5 minutes latter we started boarding. But they picked a 40ish year old white women with two early teen daughters to stop and search top to bottom!

To make matters worse. Three days latter- three days latter- on the flight back to logan from nantucket- this same women by mere chance was on our flight and she was searched again! But this time an Arab looking gentlmen was on the return flight as well and was given no special treatment!

I have no faith in our government to protect us since no mattter who rules- the careerists in the federal government are almost all leftists.

So when the dirty bomb goes off in Fanueil Hall in Boston or wherever will anyone think that our government did everything it could even reasonably do to prtoect us?

Indeed. Sometimes it's hard to notice that there's been a change of administration when it comes to certain bureaucracies. Now that the "one free grope" policy has been institutionalized by our newly federalized airport "security" mongrels, what with their wanding of grandmothers and children, we also have these two Transportation clowns making sure that terrorists get first dibs at the controls, to avoid the horror of airline pilots carrying weapons. Who the hell's in charge of these idiots?

We did win Florida, didn't we?

Oh, I definitely do not prefer Gore over Bush. But here is my point: just because B is better than C does not mean that we have to settle with B. That is, if Bush is still going to bring the downfall of our Republic (perhaps in a slightly slower manner than Gore), than it is just evil postponed - not evil avoided. BTW, did you notice Bush has increased federal pork by over double the rate Clinton did in his first two years in office? And this isn't military we are talking about, it's pure domestic pork.

The way it is going now, Bush has pissed off so many conservatives by his vast expansion of government and by his refusal to remove Clinton-holdovers, that he will lose his core constituency in 2004.

Your experience is so depressing, so disturbing.

Shlomo (I-need-a-new-first-name) Dror, spokesman for Israeli defense, nailed it in a recent Christian Science Monitor article on spotting terrorists: "The difference between Israeli and American systems is that we are looking for the terrorist, while the Americans look for weapons."

Americans can be so stupid (but at least we're politically correct!)

I so agree with you. This PC stuff is going to cost a lot of lives - actually it has. I thought having a MBA for President would get better results than this. We are no better than the terrorists if we discriminate? Trying to logically predict if someone is possibly likely to commit mass murder based on recent events is as bad as mass murder? He has mush for brains.

Why not no blacks, whites or asians? Arab != Muslim. The majority of Lebanon are Christian Arabs. Should we discriminate against them? How about atheist Arabs? Agnostic Arabs? People whose father is an Arab and their mother a Jew thereby making them a Jew according to Orthodox Jewish standards, but still half Arab to everyone else.

Thanks for the post, its excellent! I've been kinda off Ann lately and wouldn't've looked without this post. Man, she nails it. I'm feeling so defeated lately. Yeah, we got our guy in the WH and then the fix started. The rat ba$tard demonrat plant in the senate screwed that institution, and our guy and the pubbies are out big-governing the ratz, on and on, ad-infinitum. The WOT understandably erodes our freedoms, our freedoms which have already been so eroded by the WOD. The kicker is that the WOT seems to have as much chance of succeeding as either the WOD or the WOP did. The WOT, played right, could establish the corporate 'perfect war'. What many people think of as the corporate greed which drove the VNW. I dunno, maybe its time to open my 'Devil's Advocate' file.

To have these two clowns, Mineta and Magaw, still in any sort of power astounds me! $heeit, welcome to SUSA I guess.

Are you saying that Lebanese Christians don't understand that this is a war to the death?

Are you sayinjg that they don't understand that these things might require some inconvenience?

Ann is way off base on this one! It is simply is not good form, no matter how accurate, to subject mentally retarded government employees to ridicule. They are part of the government's affirmative action program and represent the national effort to find a productive use for folks who would otherwise be slumped in a doorway somewhere, drinking cheap wine from a bottle in a paper bag. Mineta is conflicted with a room temperature (wearing a sweater) IQ and leads an organization notorious for its incompetence. The NTSB, for years, has emphasized the bureacratic ineptitude of the FAA. But, the FAA is where the federal failures flock and it is just unfair to, all of a sudden, expect them to act competently, something they are literally incapable of doing. So, Ann, picking on retards is bad form even if you are right. We must be sensitive even though it may cost many lives.

It still bothers me. I have always been conservative but I simply can't believe that even after 9/11 we are living the PC lie! The Japanese killed a similiar number at Pearl harbor but at least- at the very least- that was a military target! And yet we rounded them up and threw them into camps- where they were well fed and cared for. I am not suggesting that we do the same now to Arab Americans- but for &^%^$ sake- what we are doing now is criminal!

If a dirty bomb goes off in some city and there was even the slightest chance it could have been prevented if we used logical and sane and just friggin common sense security then I say such Bureacrats should be tried and executed! There is no excuse for another 9/11.

Anne's right on the mark, as usual...

Fact is, it's going to take more people dying- not in Europe or Israel, but here in America, before the PC-morons finally get the boot. Who knows how many will have to die, when the next one happens? 100? 1,000? 10,000? All I know is that, until their pathetic, half-hearted attempts at quelling (not terrorism, but) our fears are shown to be as idiotic as they truly are, we're in danger.

I wonder where'll be the next major attack, which finally kicks Bush in the ass, so that he gets some men to take care of business, instead of clinton butt-boys...

Worse than the imagined dangers of accidentally shooting a hole in the fuselage is the utter hypocrisy. The Air Force has standing orders to shoot down airliners that deviate radically from their flight plan or appear unresponsive to ground inquiry and bound for populated centers with mayhem in mind. Since the aircraft is presumably forfeit at that point, how can shooting out a bulkhead be any worse than taking a couple of heatseekers from a "friendly?"
