I'm not a pilot, but it probably referrs to a landing when the plane does a sort of flat drop controlled descent as close as possible to the runway, as opposed to a gradual one. It's the kind of landing that makes your ears clog and hurt from the sudden increase in pressure.

I'm thinking now that maybe the remark about pancake landings was a joke?

FYI, I'm communicating from my "backup browser"-- a 66 mhtz. 486 with a sticking keyboard & gritty trackball- so excuse the weird typos, they are hard to go back to & correct.
I did send this article, and that transcript, to about 25 letters to editors, and my usual bunch of "opinionators" like Rush, Hannity, etc. We'll see...
