Internet Virus Protection

Me

I need all of your help for a good (preferably free?) virus protection program.

For hackers lurking I am protected now but am shopping around so don't get too excited to try to back-door me-won't work.

If I must fork out any money I want a good program.Any suggestions,please?

Is Norton (Symantec) the best?

Any suggestions and discussion--greatly appreciated. Thank-you.

I am using Norton Utilities for Virus detection and Zonealarm for Protection , am using Cable, got to have it!

I've had some problems with Zone Alarm also. That firewall works two ways. It took several attempts to get online...ZA wouldn't let me sign on to AOL. And it wouldn't let me post anything of length here at FR. Now I use ZA only when I want to, and close it at other

I use it and don't have any of the problems you are describing. (But don't use AOL)

Another satisfied E-Trust Antivirus user here. I'm on dial-up, and don't usually run a firewall, and I don't have any issues. I found one that I suspected was a new worm once, and the scan came back clean, but I know the things to look at and was still suspicious. I contacted them with the file as per their instructions, and it was a new one, the fix came out that night.
Norton and McAfee are quite bloated these days. E-Trust simply scans my incoming/outgoing data.
I think it's an annual license fee of around $10 ?

I don't disagree with that angle.
But the tech guys on the radio who recommend it have been on for about four years
and from all I've heard seem to be pretty "straight shooters".

Most people contract viruses via email. Using MS Outlook for email is the very best way to insure yourself that you will get a virus. Something like 80% of the viruses are targeted towards Outlook users.

I have used Pegasus since 1995 and have never had a virus infection. Pegasus is great and it is free.

I didn't read the thread but as a IT consultant I would recommend Trend Micro's PcCillin. I've seen instances of Norton failing to do its job even when kept up to date. I run the enterprise version of Trend's PcCillin on all networks I manage. Hundreds of PCs over several years and not one infection. I can't sing their praises too loud. Just my 2 cents.

I'm running Zone Alarm on one machine and Tiny Personal Firewall (TPF) on the other. TPF is a Computer Associates program and runs great, is less bothersome than ZA and is also a free download.

Also, these networks handle thousands of e-mails each week with 3-4% of them infected with some worm or virus. PcCillin automatically updates itself at user specified intervals.

The absolute best way to avoid computer virii is to not use a computer.

And the next best way is to NOT use a virus-friendly operating system and application suite.

I had to uninstall McAfee. The updates never worked because of some incompatibility with a .DLL that caused the browser scripts to fail. It frequently hung up during shutdown and was incredibly slow on startup.

Thanks for your post. My subscription will be running out soon and thanks to all this helpful advice I think I am going with Norton 2002.

I know someone who when they got their computer a Norton Symatec (or whatever their new name is) CD came with it. They ran and utilized the program, when the (I think 6 months) subscription ran out they let it go and had a huge shut down and they could not even turn their computer on. Their hard drive had to be dropped off at a local puter expert guy and the guy confirmed a trojan back door virus.

I've always used Norton System to my satisfatction, however this time with my Windows XP and my Dell computer it did not seem to work right. So I uninstalled it and just bought me Norton Anti Virus 2002 and I gave my Norton System to my son, so at least the money wasn't wasted sts. I also have Zone Alarm

The Norton I have right now reminds me with a LIVEUPDATE flashing, I'd say about twice a week.I am glad I asked advice on this thread as I was wondering about Norton 2002,it sounds as if this program does it automatic----how nice!

Alright I admit that I have put on my TF hat at times JUST WONDERING what would happen if hackers hacked Norton and messed with our heads and gave us a virus when LIVEUPDATING. Bizarre I know but I thought it.

try Kaspersky AV, small and effective. best of all, it doesn't crash other programs like Norton or Mcafee.

I use pc-Cillin and like it. I get updates often, sometimes everyday.

I don't use any norton products. several that I have tried take over your 'puter. You can't get rid of them. Then you have nothing but trouble.
I tried one of their products, tried to uninstall it and finally ended up having to fdisk and do a complete reinstall.
No more Nortons for me.

I had an iMac.And always 'did' apple for many years. And I am here to tell you that even Apples firewall is not 100% hacker free or protected from viruses. Yes indeed, Apples rock and their firewall as well; but get a virus program pronto to be safe,believe me I was hacked on a Mac.

Get Zone Alarm, in my opinion it's one of the best, and free. Also, get Ad-Aware.

I would avoid Zonealarm, at least the free version.
It blocked my access to regularly visited sites and it took me weeks to figure out that the only cure was to uninstall it.
Simply disabling it didn't work.
Never did find out why it did that, or how.

I use the McAfee online version. I automatically get updates on a regular basis. I haven't done anything about a firewall and am considering getting that from McAfee also. I know there are free ones, but having McAfee active at all times and constantly looking for updates gives me a lot of comfort.

I could go on how many can you relate to? All but McDonalds and the anitfreeze. If McDonalds is the burger place we didn't have any. And I don't get the antifreeze.

We lived right near Deer Park (they had the tiny island deer there). Most of our recreational time was horesback riding through the hills. My whole family loved it there. We talk about those days till this day.
