One Hell Of A Ghost Story
Shadowlands ^ | May 2002

Uncle John

First of all, I'd like to say that although my family has never been dabbled in any paranormal practices, but we were always taught to have respect for the dead and those on "the other side". When this incident occurred, I was about 10 years old.

It was close to midnight, and as usual, I had waited for my parents to go to bed and turned my bedside lamp on and began reading a book. There was motion in my peripheral vision and I looked up rather alarmed and saw my Uncle John standing there.

Immediately, I felt calm. I didn't question his being there as it didn't seem strange. He talked to me briefly, telling me that he loved me and to promise to be good. When he ended by saying that he wouldn't be back to see me anymore, I began to cry and ask him why. Right before my eyes, he began to become transparent. Fading slowly, his smiling face began to split, spilling blood onto his plaid shirt. Just as one side of his head seemed to drop to the floor, he disappeared completely. My sense of calm was gone, and I realized what had just happened to me. I jumped from my bed and ran down the stairs to my parents room.

About half way down the stairs, the telephone began to ring. I burst into my parents room, out of breath and crying, wanting too tell them what had happened.

Instead, when I opened my mouth, I heard my own voice say, "Aunt Mary needs you on the phone!"

The conversation was short and to the point. My mother was crying, and Daddy was on the phone, trying to calm Aunt Mary.

Later that morning, my mom asked me how did I know Aunt Mary had been on the phone. I told her everything, and she backed away from me as I spoke.

Uncle John had been driving down the two lane highway to his farm when his pick up truck was hit by an 18 wheeler. The service was closed casket, his head had been damaged beyond repair. In fact, it had been nearly cleaved in two.

Wow! I never saw a ghost but my mother did when she worked on the Queen Mary. They were all over the place.

My husband's family has a family home, built when his ancestors first arrived here from Germany -- a big antebellum house on the beach in Bay St. Louis, MS. Whenever a family member dies, s/he is cremated, and the ashes are spread on the property. All family reunions are held there, and it is a central part of everyone's memories, childhood and adult.

Every fourth of July, we go there and have a huge party. One year, after several bourbon and cokes, I decided to head to bed. I was the last one to retire. I went into our room, and my husband, who had already crashed, was sleeping on my pillow. I tried to get it from him, but he grunted and wouldn't give it up. So I decided to go into the den, grab a pillow from the sofa, and use that. As I was walking into the den, I tripped on the lip b/t the den and the dining room. "It'd be nice to have a few lights on in here," I mumbled. All of sudden, every light in the room went on -- the corner floor lamp, the two lamps on either side of the sofa, and the lamp in front of the t.v. Since the house was built before electricity, there were no overhead lights; all lamps were controlled with separate switches. A bit shaken, to say the least, I grabbed a few pillows, and ran out of the room. As I passed from the den back into the living room, the lights went out.

The next morning, I relayed my story over breakfast. One of the older aunts just huffed, "Oh, that was Aunt Edith. She was always the one who went around after the parties making sure everyone was tucked safely into bed." Well, good old Aunt Edith totally freaked me out, and I am never the last one awake in that house.

That Shadowlands site has thousands of ghost stories. Ive read a lot of them, and Uncle John is a tame one to say the least compared to some of the stories. They'll certainly get you up at night.

Don't know. Here's a story for you though...

One night in November, 1996, what may have be the most intense demonic possession ever recorded took place in North Carolina.

Several people witnessed the incident. Things got so out of hand that local police were contacted as the "events" happened.

I was one of the people who saw it. Was involved with a few others who were also working with the unfortunate individual, even. However it is that Hollywood's made this out to be, it was not fun or entertaining or "cool" to watch. You don't get your sanity yanked so hard as it is when a voice from the pit screams out the deepest secrets of your heart for all to hear.

One of these days I'm going to relate the story of what happened that night. Just pour it out and let others take from it what they may.

I can't say I ever saw a ghost or "shadow people", but have you ever had a vivid dream where someone you knew who had died was there, and you had a good long talk ? I've had a few of those, I don't know what to make of it but it always made me feel good upon waking up.

My mother had a visit from one of her brothers the night he died. It was not a premonition of his death but more like he came & woke her to tell her goodbye before he left for the other side.

Darth,can't you tell us now.

It took five and a half years to even relate that much in public, for the first time.

And it's not good to dwell upon it, either. C.S. Lewis wrote something about that: that the dual dangers of demons is to either disbelieve in them, and give them all that room to work against you. Or to believe in them too much, and become obsessed with them... so that they come to have power over you. That's what it's been like for me ever since that night: either ignore what happened entirely only on the basis that it can't be rationally explained per our understanding of physics/psychology and lose any wariness of what evil is capable of. Or become lost in a body of knowledge that our minds in this flesh should not delve into, because this flesh cannot take it without suffering some terrible effects for it.

That make sense?

My dad was murdered at home in 1992. At the time of his death his mother had been in a nursing home with Alzheimers for a number of years. The day he was killed, and before we told the staff, my grandmother went to the nurses station and said to the two ladies on duty “ My son just came by to say he loved me and but would not be able to visit me anymore and I just want to know what’s going on?”

Make of this what you will. When I was 10 my father was at the tail end of a long illness (he was only 44 with five kids). Mom and my brother would have to travel a bit to see him at the VA hospital so the rest of us would be handed off to relatives for short periods of time. I was with one of my older cousins and her brother who was much closer to my age. My little sisters may have been there too. Anyway, we were hanging out in her apartment doing what kids do when the phone rang. Immediately I knew. It rang a couple of times before it was answered but I looked at my younger cousin and sort of shrugged my shoulders. (He'd lost his father too.) I KNEW. I knew at the moment that that phone rang that my father was dead. (I had no real idea what death meant but I knew it was bad.) My older cousin didn't say anything to us but we were herded over to my aunt's house (another America back then) where my mother gathered us together to deliver the news. Supernatural? Paranormal? Probably not. Maybe I picked up on all the undercurrents of what was going on all around me. (I am very sensitive and perceptive. :-P) But, I tell you, it was very strange.

Not really, but I appreciate your fear of reprisal. I'm not a spirtual man, and I am a firm skeptic when it comes to UFOs, Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, yada yada....

In the mid 70's, when I was just an 8 year old boy, my family witnessed an extremely bizarre happening - it even made the local news. It must have been witnessed by thousands - but it went down the memory hole.

Whenever I would bring it up with my mother (a woman most logical and religious), she'd get quite upset, and would say "It was God's way".

I know I'm not creating this from whole clothe, because my brothers and sisters, who are older than me, remember it the same way.

I have had one of these with my father. I knew I was dreaming and he was sitting in his usual spot in my childhood house. I wanted to see him one last time. I got my wish. He looked very natural.

Also, I had a few dreams of him when he was dying of cancer that were vivid and symbolic. They indicated that he would be going to heaven and I hope they were true.

I have some good ones too. Mostly little things, but bizarre. I can't think of all of them offhand, but I remember one night when I got home from work, I was sitting on the floor reading the newspaper. There was a pen laying on my flat, stationary coffee table. Out of nowhere, it started to move and rolled right off. I just mentally kept repeating that physics rule "An object in motion tends to stay in motion, an object at rest tends to stay at rest". Then I blocked it out and went back to reading the paper. I was too tired to react. That happened twice there along with some other stuff. That was a weird place I lived at.

I had a co-worker once who lived on the outskirts of town. He told me something that had happened to him a couple of times. He was sitting in his living room and saw a procession of Indians passing through his house in a line. His brother saw it too. He did some research and found that his home was directly on the path of an old Indian trail. Interesting.

Another one, I knew this younger guy whose wife had died (several people suspected he had poisoned her). He could not sleep in their old bedroom. He told me he would walk into the room and see the rocking chair rocking like there was someone in it. Scared the heck out of him. He 'knew' her spirit was still in that house.

Taking a break just home from a last class . . . quick reply . . .

Guess I hesitate to describe this as a ghost story.

God seems--and certainly did in at least one Scriptural story--to set some rather clear limits on what can and cannot communicate from "beyond the grave" with us in this time/space dimension. Nevertheless, He Himself is want at times to cut clear across even His own little boxes. He certainly allowed David to with the shewbread etc.

The situation you described appears to me to be a clear message that God allowed from a beloved uncle to you. It also was a message to your whole family and perhaps to us hereon that THERE IS life beyond this one. . . .and that we needs be loving while we have the chance in this one.

I think the detail of his death was an added sort of "God thing" wherein He seems to love to toss in very telling or key details of a very literal nature just to clue us in how much attention HE IS paying to us and life here in general.

It could also have served as a point of comfort to the rest of your family as well as you--if God cared enough to communicate so personally and touchingly to you, perhaps He really did care for all of you, including the uncle--and had everything under control regardless of emotions and appearances--and would invite all of you and us to trust Him with all the details of all our lives.

I believe that most ghost stories that have the flavor of ghost stories are not very edifying or comforting. I believe that they involve demons pure and simple and/or demons masquerading as a dead loved one. Given that they have all the details of history at their observant disposal, it's not a great matter for them to pretend to be a deceased person rather convincingly.

One needs to ask what is the purpose as well as the source of the phenomenon. If it seems entirely "nice," is there some sort of seduction going on trying to strengthen a demonic grip on an individual, family, situation, place or habitation. If it seems primarily fear engendering, the source is rather obvious.

The Bible is full of "fear not!'s" and Jesus, the conqueror of the world, the flesh, the devil, hell and the grave has demonstrated with His Resurrection, we really have nothing to fear other than displeasing someone we love and would hate to displease because we Love Him.

My mother still keeps her grandparents home. The family will sometimes meet over there for the weekend, and do repair work on the house to keep it up. We've all felt a presence in the house. Nothing disturbing or threatening just a feeling that someone is there. We all thing it's my great-grandfather.

A man who ministered in deliverance was presented with a situation wherein a young man manifested demons far in excess of anything all of the people present could handle.  The young man was kicking, punching and acting out some of his martial arts moves and was totally out of control.  The man in charge just prayed and asked the Lord to send two angels to restrain the subject.  Instantly the young man was totally restrained by something invisible.  God is greater than all of one's enemies.

Not a ghost story, but a weird incident nonetheless...

We were visiting the Washington memorial back in 1964 on a family vacation. My mother, who was extremely overweight, was wearing a somewhat formal black dress, as many ladies wore in such dignified places back then. She had already been complaining about being out of breath that morning since we had already done so much walking. But as my sister and me kept begging her to walk up to the top with us, some young girl about 9 or so came out of the crowd, grabbed my mother's hand and begged her not to go inside. She then ran off into the crowd.

This scared my mother so much, that she sat down on a bench to gather her wits. Needless to say, she didn't leave that bench until we headed back to the hotel. Mother has always speculated that this was her guardian angel. It sure was a strange thing though.
