Saudi Arabia to build own flight training centre
Reuters | 6/24/02

Posted on 06/24/2002 6:11:02 AM PDT by kattracks

MANAMA, June 24 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia launched on Monday a $20 million project to build its own flight training centre after Western countries tightened rules on training foreign pilots following the September 11 attack.

"It will be one of the most modern pilot training centres in the world," said Mohammed Abdullah al-Angari, general manager of the Projects and Trading Company, a private firm contracted by Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) to build the centre.

Angari told Reuters by telephone from Jeddah the project was expected to be completed within 18 months.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers who commandeered three aircraft into landmarks in Washington and New York were Saudis.

Saudia officials said the centre will consist of two sections; one for training pilots and the other for aviation safety specialists.

The loss-making Saudia, which flies to 80 destinations, has a fleet of 137 aircraft, including 61 new planes bought at a cost of around $7.5 billion.

Saudi Arabia plans to privatise Saudia as part of economic reforms, and to help reduce its mounting domestic debts, which currently stands at $170 billion.

As I've been saying, the next suicide airliner attack will be a professional saudi pilot in a saudi plane. Best to ban any Middle Eastern airliners from overflying or landing near urban centers in the USA.

Excellent prediction. There was an Egyptian co-pilot that took down a plane once.

Yes, but if we don't train them, perhaps they won't be able to get here. You don't learn to fly a plane in a madrassah.

They'll be able to save on costs by skipping the "landing" part of the training.

On a more serious note, from what I remember in discussion from earlier, I think the hi tech flight simulators used in airliner training aren't all that easy to come by, I hope that given the state of the world that the US government declares these simulators military equipment and bans their export.

Was it paid for by Al Qaeda? My understanding is the Bin Laden family is in the construction business and there would seem to be something apopros about their building a training facility for who knows future homocide flight bombers.

Didn't we already have one of those? The Egyptian pilot who flew Egyptair 990 into the ocean three years ago.

From airdisaster.com:

Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 163

Review of the CVR showed a serious breakdown in crew co-ordination almost from the first sign of trouble. The Captain failed to delegate responsibility to the other crew members, deciding to fly the aircraft and try to assess and remedy the problem as well. The First Officer had very limited experience on the L1011 and did not try to assist the Captain in flying the aircraft or monitoring communications or systems. The Second Officer, who was thought to be dyslexic, spent nearly all of his time searching through the aircraft's operations manual, the whole time repeating to himself "No Problem."

In addition, the Captain did not warn the cabin crew to prepare for evacuation nor did he even indicate that an evacuation was going to take place. Instead, he told the flight crew not to evacuate after landing. After the aircraft was stopped, one final transmission was received, indicating that an evacuation was about to take place. The evacuation never began however. The fire had moved rapidly forward and all of the victims were found in the forward half of the aircraft though none of the doors had been opened.

It is not known why the crew was not able to better coordinate their efforts to handle the emergency more efficiently and prepare the crew for an immediate evacuation. It seems unbelievable that the aircraft could land safely with all alive on board and yet not one person was able to escape. Following the accident, Lockheed removed the insulation from above the rear cargo area and reinforced it with high strength glass laminate. In addition, Saudia revised their emergency procedures and evacuation training and also sealed off all of the C-3 baggage areas.

Yes, good prediction, since Egyptair already has experienced something very close to this. By the way, is anybody else wondering why the government hasn't come clean on this one yet? Still not wanting to offend arab sensibilities?

You're so negative about the whole thing. Give credit where it's due, now...

EgyptAir 990 stunk from Day One. I've read scores of CVR transcripts, and in no other case did a pilot "rely on God" to tidy things up.

The only thing in that picture that I can clearly identify are the utensils. I'm afraid. I have some speculations about the one on the bottom, but none of them involve edible foodstuffs.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to offer a bounty. I am prepared to make a small ($50) donation to FR during the next fundraiser in the name of the first freeper who can clearly and convincingly identify at least three of the four "dishes" pictured in post #21.

If anyone can identify all four, that's great, but please be prepared to provide supporting documentation for your entry. The best supporting evidence I can think of would include pictures of the dish in an alternate context, such that the dish is clearly identified. Recipes that include pictures are even better, but failing that, a recipe or a description of the dish that leaves as little doubt as possible that the item described is actually the item pictured will have to do, I suppose.

Please note, however, that any such supporting evidence must be from an independent third party, and not some recipe for fried camel that you just made up. In the interests of fairness, should no freeper be able to successfully identify three of the dishes, I will commit to donating the bounty to FR in the name of whichever freeper comes closest to identifying as many as possible, in my sole and final judgement.

See http://www.e-telescope.gr/English/World/world_en_130901.htm for the role simulators played in the 9-11 WTC attacks.

Shouldn't these things need an export license to go to Saudi Arabia? Right now, according to http://www.bis.doc.gov, THEY DON'T!!

What homeland security, when we're helping them build a school for terrorists?

To me it makes the entire gun-in-cockpit debate moot. There won't be any more 11 Sept style hijackings because for one thing, all passengers are aware of their do or die responsibility.

Best way out of this mess is find an alternative source for oil or energy, and cut off all contact with the Arabs. That means no immigration, no tourism, no visas, no commerical airliners. They'll just rot on the vine.

From the top down:

A breadstick.
A hunk of goat meat.
Curried rice.
The thing on the bottom looks like bacon which is a no-no in Islam, unless it's goat bacon?

Ummm, I'm suspicious of all of your answers ;)

From the top down:

A breadstick.

Gawd, shoot the baker.

A hunk of goat meat.

Why does it look like it has raisins?

Curried rice.

I thought it looked more noodle-like, actually.

The thing on the bottom looks like bacon which is a no-no in Islam, unless it's goat bacon?

"Goat bacon"? Now you're really reaching. But, that's four proposals, so since you're first in line, you're in the lead for the time being. ;)

I'll have to ping some people to get some help here, and maybe set a deadline...

,,, route all flights ex Saudi and the Emirates thru Kuala Lumpur and clear them thru the Marshall Islands. That will keep pressure off Europe and the UK - as well as revenue, but who cares? Trans-ship them to US carriers at the Marshall Islands stage and load their fares accordingly.

Israeli air traffic doesn't get hi-jacked, so they could remain with their present operational routing.

That's horrible. I sincerely hope you're wrong, but I'll give credit where it's due if you're not.

I like #3 - that looks like a winner for now. As for the rest, I'll have to reserve judgement for the moment - I'm not a big mare's blood cheese fan, nor a fan of tripe, so my experience is sadly limited. Is there some place I can look at pictures or recipes for these gourmet preparations, for comparative purposes?

3) Rat on a stick (the Official National dish).
