"But isn't the most effective way to keep these forest fires from becoming disasters of biblical proportions, ironically enough, letting them burn naturally every few years?

I'm no "bible thumper," but let me paraphrase one famous passage... The forest was made for man, not man for the forest.

Of course no one here wants to put malls in the middle of forests, why do you profer such melodramatic malevolence? Are you fishing for flames? We are not against the environment, just the "Born Again Pagan" EnvironMentalists!!!

They prey on ignorance by spreading more of it with their plausible deceptions and ready to hide when cornered with their plausible deniability. They want to fool ya, so they can rule ya, just like the GANG-GREEN Nature Nazis they have become. They are drunk with governmental power!!!

You need to talk to the co-founder of GreenPiece. He's seen the light and hopefully you will too, some day. Better yet, engage one of our own Freepers, Carry_Okie in a conversation. Better yet, secure his phenominal book!

Waspman, I had to reboot in the middle of my reply and you beat me to it. I will provide links though.

So I'll repeat - how were the forests able to survive before loggers arrived?

The Native peoples set fires every year to keep the small trees and underbrush down. I'll try to find my link to a great book on this.

It's obvious that there needs to be a much smarter policy put into place that isn't dictated by lobby groups from either side. A policy that allows reasonable access to the logging industry, while maintaining a healthy eco-system.

Yes, there is a such a policy. Natural Process. Be sure to read the reviews, including the letter to V. P. Cheney. Wonderful stuff. If you ask, the author might even sign one for you.
