This is great! Another slap in the face of Libertarian insanity, and a splash of reason and rationality for us all!

What do you bet that they'll use this to make certain that your kids are taking their ritalin?

Are they going to test teachers and administrators, too?

Why Not? (See, I know the answer)

I would hate to be going to public school in America today.

Teacher: "Okay kids, here's today's schedule. First you're all going to the nurse's office to pee in a cup. Then we're going to have a shakedown where the doors are locked, dogs are brought in and your lockers are searched. After that, you'll all have your picture taken for the photo ID you'll all be wearing every day. Then you'll have 10 minutes to go over the school's requirements for your uniforms. Oh, and don't forget to be careful in the halls for the men installing all the closed circuit security cameras."

"Then after lunch, we're going to review our wonderful form of government and discuss how free we are all are, and how terrible all those other oppressive countries are. That will be followed by an assembly where we'll all sing the Star Spangled Banner. And don't forget the words either, "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave".

freeee: "Please excuse me, I think I'm going to be sick."

Teacher: "I don't think so, Mr. freeee. You're not wearing your photo ID, come with me."

I recall reading that in (at least) one of the moslem countries, I think (but am not sure) that it was Saudi Arabia, unmarried women are subject to random inspections for virginity. If they fail, they are given the choice of immediate marriage or a flogging.

I wonder what the conservatives posting here in support of this drug testing decision think about this? How does this differ from drug testing? Wouldn't virginity inspections further the schools interest in ridding their campuses of illegal sex by minors? I gather many of you think paddling is an acceptable punishment for minors, so we could incorporate that aspect of the Saudi code as well, no?

I don't mind them testing my boys, as long as all the teachers and administrators are tested too. I'd bet a fair amount that the NEA won't be agreeing to that, though...

This is unfortunate. While I understand the need to fight drug use and understand that minors do not and should not have the same rights as adults, this decision will only further the programming of young people to be ignorant of their rights. We have random testing because we don't have the guts to test people who are clearly impaired in some way. In large part, we've lost this ability because too many courts have ruled in favor of people who sued even though there was clear probable cause that they had done something wrong. Testing students will most likely cause them to think that protection against warrantless search is only intended to protect the guilty when in reality it was supposed to protect the innocent.

Mostly Afraid of the Ignorance (of the 4th Amendment)

So we can willy-nilly demand of kids to pee in a cup, without suspicion of wrongdoing, BUT convicted California convicts can use privacy rights to avoid having their blood drawn for the California DNA database.

Convicted criminals, currently encarcerated, have the OPTION of having their blood taken... but high school kids, under NO suspicion, have to pee in cups? We're really starting to destroy our country, folks.

"In the laaaand of the Freeeee! And the home.... of the.... braaaaaave!" (now go pee in a cup for me, Johnny).
