Aviation Ordnancemen (AOs) are aircraft armament (weapons) specialists. They are in charge of storing, servicing, inspecting, and handling all types of weapons and ammunition carried on Naval and Marine aircraft.

Ordnance Attitude Adjustment Tools

What Aviation Ordnancemen do...

Inspect, maintain and repair aircraft mechanical and electrical armament/ordnance systems.

Service aircraft guns and accessories.

Stow, assemble, and load aviation ammunition including aerial mines and torpedoes.

Service releasing and launching devices.

Load supplementary munitions.

Assemble, test, and maintain air-launched guided missiles.

Supervise operation of aviation ordnance shops, armories and stowage facilities.

Possibly function as air crewmen in various types of aircraft.

When training is completed, aviation ordnancemen may be assigned to Navy ships carrying aircraft, air stations, squadrons deployed to aircraft carriers or other aviation facilities in the U.S. or overseas.

The Hornet will be releasing the JDAM at the Okinawa, Japan Range Area in the first fleet squadron drop of the newly developed weapon. JDAM uses a global positioning system aided inertial navigation system to guide its 2,000 or 1,000 pound warhead to the target with a high degree of accuracy.

The Legend of Saint Barbara

"The Patron Saint of Cannoneers and Ordnancemen"

Saint Barbara was born in the year 218 A.D., in Nicomedia, a city of northern Asia Minor. Her father, Dioscorus, was a tyrannical Roman. During his absence from home, the girl embraced the teaching of Origen, the great Christian doctor. Dioscorus on his return ordered a new house built for Barbara, who was very beautiful, where she might entertain her suitors.

To symbolize her faith, the maiden induced the builder to put three windows in her bedroom to typify the Trinity, instead of the two windows her father had ordered.

When Dioscorus discovered the third, most significant window and questioned her, Barbara admitted she had become a Christian. Not only did she insist upon clinging to the new religion, but she rejected the suitor whom her father had selected as her husband. She was tried on her father's indictment, found guilty and sentenced to death. Dioscorus called the prefect, "Give me the sword; she shall die at my own hands."

And so did Barbara die at the hands of her own father. Even as the sword fell, lightening fell upon this cruel father and consumed him as he stood.

Because lightening appeared to revenge the death of Barbara, she became the protectress against lightening and thunder. Ordnancemen, regardless of the flags under which they served through the centuries, have claimed Barbara as their patron saint.

The place: the flight deck of the USS Coral Sea, somewhere in the Mediterranean, 1989.

Two ordies are holding a Sidewinder about waist-high while arguing with the plane captain, one on each end of the weapon.

I proceed to limbo under the missile--and it gets caught on PLAT TV.

I didn't live that one down...

I read that post about the "nutcase" yesterday, CS, and I'm sorry that there are some members of the genus Homo Erectus who have evolved way past their mental ability to do so.

The next time one of these retards says something like that, respond with:

"REMEMBER - When you put on your shorts in the morning, brown stains to the back, yellow stains to the front."

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

And to the Republic for which it stands.

One nation under God.

Indivisible.

With liberty and justice for all.

And I pledge allegiance to a lot more than that. I pledge allegiance to my country and to my countrymen. I pledge allegiance to the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who right now are standing between us and evil.

I pledge allegiance to the notion that we are all free and equal, that whether you came here on the Mayflower or a slave ship, as a refugee or a reject, a great hero or a nameless nobody, you are an American. And you are my brother or sister. And we are family. And nobody crosses us.

I pledge allegiance to the cab drivers and the waitresses, the firemen and the cops, the nurses and the teachers. The withered old people clinging to life and the squawking babies still pasty from their mothers' wombs. The people at computers and standing at assembly lines. The moms and dads, sons and daughters, the families who are the backbone of this land.

I pledge allegiance to the farmers in their fields, and amidst their herds and great orchards. The men and women who feed the world and turn nature's bounty and raw materials into the fullest supermarkets and bellies on the planet. Who produce in such abundance that the poorest of the poor eat well and the starving of the globe open relief boxes stamped with the American flag.

I pledge allegiance to two hundred and some years of doing it our way. Of conquering a continent and wrestling it into productivity and kneeling in gratitude to the God who made it all possible. I pledge allegiance to the faith of our fathers, spoken in different ways but offered up with like sincerity. To the churches and synagogues and mosques. Wherever good people learn love at the Creator's hand.

I pledge allegiance to the Founding Fathers and to their vision. To the Constitution they wrote and the nation they forged. To Washington and Adams, Jefferson and Madison, Lincoln and Roosevelt, Truman and Reagan. To Clara Barton and Frederick Douglass, Luther Burbank and Meriwether Lewis, Thomas A. Edison and John M. Browning, Dwight David Eisenhower and Harriet Beecher Stowe. To all who have gone before and done so with greatness, known to the world or consigned to obscurity. Who have contributed to the nation I love.

I pledge allegiance to the Congress of the United States, and the presidency, and the various legislatures and executives of the sundry states and municipalities. To the notion that our voices together select our leaders and laws, that through accountable intermediaries we govern ourselves, from the school down the street to the Capitol in Washington. I pledge allegiance to the courts, where justice is blind and the standing is equal, where the murderer and his victim find justice and representation before the might of the people. Where a nation of laws serves a nation of rulers.

I pledge allegiance to the future, and to the nation we will give our children. We will work to leave it as prosperous, free and strong as we received it. To give as good as we got, to bequeth our descendents a land as great as the one delivered to us by our ancestors.

I pledge allegiance to the force of arms against our enemies and attackers. I will fight in any and every way to protect my nation, its interests and people, be that in the arena of opinion and public attitude, or on the field of battle. I pledge allegiance to the notion that American victory must be unequivocal and absolute, that no weapon or means should be spared to protect this nation and that no consideration should be allowed to temper the fury of our defense. Those who attack us must surrender unconditionally, or be annihilated.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

And to the Republic for which it stands.

One nation under God.

Indivisible.

With liberty and justice for all.

And I pledge allegiance to a lot more than that.

I thought y'all might like this:

These are the words of a retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant. Ed Evans is a close friend of a comrade that sent this to meand a veteran Marine of the Vietnam War. He is a great guy with a level headed and clear view of the world.

I Will NOT Forget!

I sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List" asked myself, "Why didn't the Jews fight back?"

Now I know why.

I sat in a movie theater watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself, "Why weren't we prepared?"

Now I know why.

Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people.

On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors.

On September 11, thousands of innocent people were murdered because too many Americans naively reject the reality that some nations are dedicated to the dominance of others. Many political pundits, pacifists and media personnel want us to forget the carnage. They say we must focus on the bravery of the rescuers and ignore the cowardice of the killers. They implore us to understand the motivation of the perpetrators. Major television stations have announced they will assist the healing process by not replaying devastating footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers.

I will not be manipulated.

I will not pretend to understand.

I will not forget.

I will not forget the liberal media who abused freedom of the press to kick our country when it was vulnerable and hurting.

I will not forget that CBS anchor Dan Rather preceded President Bush's address to the nation with the snide remark, "No matter how you feel about him, he is still our president."

I will not forget that ABC TV anchor Peter Jennings questioned President Bush's motives for not returning immediately to Washington, DC and commented, "We're all pretty skeptical and cynical about Washington."

And I will not forget that ABC's Mark Halperin warned if reporters weren't informed of every little detail of this war, they aren't "likely - nor should they be expected-to show deference."

I will not isolate myself from my fellow Americans by pretending an attack on the USS Cole in Yemen was not an attack on the United States of America.

I will not be appeased with pointless, quick retaliatory strikes like those perfected by the previous administration.

I will not be comforted by "feel-good, do nothing" regulations like the silly "Have your bags been under your control?" question at the airport.

I will not be influenced by so called,"antiwar demonstrators" who exploit the right of expression to chant anti-American obscenities.

I will not forget the moral victory handed the North Vietnamese by American war protesters who reviled and spat upon the returning soldiers, airmen, sailors and Marines.

I will not be softened by the wishful thinking of pacifists who chose reassurance over reality.

I will embrace the wise words of Prime Minister Tony Blair who told Labor Party conference, "They have no moral inhibition on the slaughter of the innocent. If they could have murdered not 7,000 but 70,000, does anyone doubt they would have done so and rejoiced in it?

There is no compromise possible with such people, no meeting of minds, no point of understanding with such terror. Just a choice: defeat it or be defeated by it. And defeat it we must!"

I will force myself to:

-hear the weeping
-feel the helplessness
-imagine the terror
-sense the panic
-smell the burning flesh
-experience the loss
-remember the hatred.

I sat in a movie theater, watching "Saving Private Ryan" and asked myself, "Where did they find the courage?"

Now I know.

We have no choice. Living without liberty is not living.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Ed Evans USMC (Ret.)

Thank you for sharing this, g'nad.
Several years ago I bought the two-part video set of Schindler's List . and a year ago sent it to one of my sons for HIS young sons, now nearly 10 and 14.

I wanted them to appreciate the sacrifices some make at great risk to themselves.
Although not Jewish, I was a child when the concentration camps were found, and the stories told.

I and mine will NEVER FORGET what happened, and do everything in our power to prevent such things happening again.

Hello folks!

I'll try to get back later tonight, but wanted to post this in case I can't get in for a visit tomorrow...

This went out to the troops, I thought it was appropriate to share...

Fourth of July Message from the Secretary of Defense

By Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The following is a message from Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld:

At a critical moment during the Revolutionary War, when his army was surrounded and in danger of being destroyed, GeneralWashington issued this order: "Put only Americans on guard tonight." Washington knew, at that moment of crisis, he could rely on those citizen-soldiers -- volunteers who had left behind their families and farms to risk everything for the cause of freedom.

Thanks to their service and sacrifice, America achieved her independence. And every July 4th since, Americans have come together to give thanks for our freedom and what our country has become: the freest, most creative and dynamic nation on earth.

This Fourth of July across America, families will enjoy picnics, and parades, and the uplifting beat of "Stars and Stripes Forever." But our celebrations are tempered by the knowledge that the freedoms we hold sacred and dear have once again come under attack.

So today, as in General Washington's time, we take comfort in the knowledge that Americans like you are on guard tonight --
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen.

Like the Minute Men who dropped their pitchforks and took up rifles to defend their new nation in 1776, each of you stepped forward to defend America against the new threats of this new century.

Through your service and sacrifice, you help make every day Independence Day for the United States of America.

Our people are free because your hearts are brave. And so on this Fourth of July, we stop to say to each of you: Thank you for what you do for our country.

Donald H. Rumsfeld

I think that pretty much sums it up! ;-) Love, GG

I could have said that, g'nad!
Great post!

One thing I'd like to add to the Gunny's words:

We ain't mean enough!
I'm getting a little tired of the liberal's claim that to do to them what they do to us makes us no better than them.
That's crap!
Did the Jews kneel at the trench waiting for the bullet because they felt to do otherwise would make them no better than the Germans?
I propose they did so because they couldn't believe the inhumanity of fellow humans.
I propose that the passengers on that plane were in the same state of shock.
We've got to get MEAN if we want to survive as a nation!
We're the target of every biting, snapping dog in the world.
We have got to shed our pussy cat demeanor and assume the stance and disposition of the meanest pit bull in the pen if we want to survive.

I remember 9-11 as if it were today. My SIL called to wake Mother and I up, telling us to turn on the TV. We tuned in just in time to see the second plane crash into the World Trade Center.

I got up, went into the back room, and loaded a snub nose .38. It stayed in my pocket the next few days because I had no idea what would happen next. I wanted to be prepared to protect and defend Mother if needed.

The rest of that day (and the next few) I was glued to the TV and FR. On 9-13, I sent a letter to President Bush. I also posted that letter on the web as an Open Letter to the President. This morning I went back and read that letter again. Every word I wrote then I still belive today. I am posting a copy below so as we enter the Forth of July Holiday we can renew our dedication to our Country, our Freedom, and our Future.

Magoo

open letter to President Bush

Sent on 13 Sep 2001

Mr. President,

I, along with most Americans, watched the attacks of 9/11 in horror. It has taken me a few days to compose my thoughts on this crisis facing us. As you deal with this Crisis, please consider my thoughts and suggestions as an average American who will stand with you throughout this trial by fire.

As you stated in your message to Americans, we are in fact in a state of war. As much as I wish it were not so, I must accept this as fact. I implore you to address a joint session of Congress and request a Formal Declaration of War against all terrorist organizations. I do not think that I need to remind you that On February 23, 1998, The World Islamic Front for Jihad—a non-governmental umbrella group of Islamic fanatics—issued a formal declaration of war on the United States. By Congress making a Formal Declaration of War, we would be on record in the World’s view as accepting that a state of war has existed between the United States and these fanatics, and we will respond as we see fit to insure our survival as a Nation. To declare a state of war with an autonomous group is not without precedent, the 4th Congress did in fact declare war against the Barbary Pirates.

In light of this being a war situation, I ask that you include the following actions in the overall plan to win this war.

  • Seek out and destroy with great prejudice all those who participated in the attacks on September 11, 2001. Any military action undertaken must be swift, decisive, and extreme in context. It must send a clear signal that any terror attack against the United States is a very bad idea.

  • For those who are arrested on United States’ soil, tried and convicted in our Courts, bring back public hanging. I realize this seems barbaric, but it is no less barbaric than the acts of horror they participated in. Once again, it sends a very clear message to anyone who contemplates terrorist activities on American soil.

  • Treat any Nation who harbors, aids, or funds a terrorist organization as an active participant and a just target for Military action.

  • Any population group, even if civilian, who celebrates an attack on The United States should also be considered to be terrorist and a just target for Military action. I am directly referring to the street celebrations that were filmed in the West Bank cities of Ramallah and Nablus.

  • Aircraft security needs to be addressed. Ultimately the security of an aircraft falls on the shoulders of the flight crew. Every aircraft flight crew should be armed with small caliber arms loaded with frangible ammunition that will not compromise aircraft integrity if fired. These individuals are entrusted with the safety of the passengers. Give them the ability to fulfill that task. This is also more cost affective than the Sky Marshall program. It would also expand the program to cover every commercial aircraft.

  • Schools are also at risk of terrorist attack. Our teachers, like aircrews, are entrusted with the safety of the students in their charge. Teachers are the last line of defense of the students. Give them the ability to carry concealed arms. Not all have to be armed to be effective. Just the thought that the teacher might be armed will keep attacks to schools at a minimum.

  • In order to prevent terrorist acts in the general public, we need to have a National Concealed Carry Act. The Law Enforcement Officers in place now cannot possibly be everywhere. The general public must be able to stop a terrorist threat as it happens. According to USC Title 10 Section 311 Chapter 13, we have an obligation to assist in the common defense. This includes stopping terrorist activities and also violent criminal activities. Without a National Concealed Carry Act, we are stripped of the ability to fulfill our obligations as spelled out in the U.S. Code.

  • Secure our Borders. There is no excuse for the thousands of illegal Foreign Nationals who cross our Borders each and every month. We have in place procedures for legal immigration from other Nations. How many of the terrorists could have been stopped at our Borders before they murdered thousands? As a native born citizen, I am offended that granting citizenship to those who broke our laws by illegal entry is even considered.

The horror of September 11, 2001 has united this Nation. Our anger and sense of purpose will not be deterred. Some of the points above might seem on the surface to be extreme or barbaric. I don’t think so. They are designed to not only fulfill our need for Justice to be served, but also to send a clear message that to attack The United States will bring swift and sure destruction back to the source. Mr. President, we elected you to lead this Nation. As President and Commander in Chief, you have the responsibility to insure domestic security. I fully expect you to implement the above or similar actions to insure our continued existence as the Greatest Nation on Earth.

With respect,

(signed)
