WASHINGTON, July 10 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) Many U.S. based Muslim and Arab organizations criticized a discriminatory court verdict depriving a mother from her child after she became a Muslim, just after the same organizations praised the decision of the Cook County police department in Illinois which allowed a Muslim deputy commissioner to wear hijab (veil) while on duty.
A South Dakota court ruled that a child be taken from his mother because she converted to Islam.
The parents of the woman filed a lawsuit against their daughter accusing her of adopting abnormal conduct, including wearing a Muslim outfit and declaring that she became a Muslim. They also presented to the court a photo of the mother wearing hijab.
She married an Egyptian man and was preparing to travel to Egypt with her son. The court ruled that the childs custody goes to the mothers parents.
The file of this case contains many anti- Muslim sentences, which indicate that the decision may not be taken depending on the best interest of the child, but rather it is based on discrimination, said Jachua Sallam, civil rights official at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Meanwhile, in Illinois, a Muslim policewoman was able to win her fight with the police department she works in, when they allowed her to wear the hijab while on duty after their initial refusal.
The American Muslims welcome that the department has accepted to give the policewomen her religious freedom, said Ibrahim Hoper, head of the media department in CAIR.
This case proves that that any conflicts that may appear in places where there are religious diversity can be solved if good intensions and the will to solve the problem exist, he added.
According to article 7 in the human rights law of 1964, it is illegal that business owners discriminate between their employees on the basis of their beliefs or religious activities.
The law also dictate that business owners should accept their employees religious practices if they are acceptable and are not a burden on the owner.
Many Muslim organizations in the U.S. have demanded at the beginning of the month of July that public and media pressure be imposed on the police department for its refusal to allow the policewomen to wear the hijab after she became a Muslim in January 2002.

What next, will they introduce the sharia in the US, like they did in Malaysia?
Malaysia State Approves Strict Islamic Punishment Code
In the Netherlands there was a case where a muslim woman who worked for a court wanted to wear her hjiab in court! She filed a complaint after the judge did not allow it. A commission said she was allowed to wear it, but the judge dismissed this, pointing out to the seperation of church and the justice department. These are attempts to undermine the state to gradualy introduce their way of life. The Trojan Horses...

a Muslim policewoman was able to win her fight with the police department she works in, when they allowed her to wear the hijab while on duty Aside from the obvious irony here that a true muslim woman wouldn't be taking a job or driving a police car, this ruling could be a dream come true for any cop who might face a brutality rap. Imagine, being allowed to conceal one's face while on duty so that no witnesses can give a positive ID!

I think that in the US most Muslim women who wear a hajib only wear something that covers the hair, not the face. I could be wrong, though.

Whatever the advantages of "multiculturalism""may be, it leads to situations such as this. Gore Vidal, of all people, has said that the national motto "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one) no longer works. It is now "Ex Uno Plures" (Out of one, many.)
I can't think of a single multicultural state in history that has not had to become authoritarian (e.g. Austria-Hungary) or totalitarian (e.g. the old USSR) in order to hold itself together. Lest you mention Switzerland as an exception, I would say that the three major ethnic/cultural groups in Switzerland are separated by very high mountains.

Pretty stark, backwards and brutal, but I could see where some divorced dads in this country would welcome islamic "laws" that limit their ex's access to their money and kids.

Back in the 7th Century that was fairly progressive stuff. consider that among the Northern Europeans at the time all women were essentially slaves, as were most men except for the titled nobles.
Life has gotten better in recent centuries.

Seeing as I attend a campus with several muslim women running around, this much is accurate.
That aside, it is kinda nice to walk around and see little chinese munchkins being pushed by grandma. Very cute.

Good for them!! get the kid away from her before she can poison its mind with that pagan nonsense.

It will soon come to the point that all crooks, murderers and rapists, male or female, of any race or nationality will be wearing Islamic head coverings and robes while prowling the streets and doing their evil deeds.
Then, try to pick them out of a mug-shot book or police line-up!
Hah!

I don't see how this relates to the case mentioned in the article. The article was about a woman who wanted to wear a headcovering (no mention of whether or not it covered her face) while working. I don't see how this ruling has any bearing on whether or not a murderer, rapist or "crook" will try to cover his or her face, since the criminal in question wouldn't be doing any of those actions as part of his or her job.

Yeah crooks have never worn ski-masks, bandanas and even panty hose on their heads to hide their identity... You have found yet a new strange way to rant about how much we don't like muslims...
___________
This is a hard article to respond to...
Mothers do have the right to become Muslim (she married an Egyptian) and raise their children in any faith they like. There grandparents should have - better have - better reasons to take a child from the parents than their religion, even if they don't like it.
A cop wearing a veil is laughable. There is just too much thrown into one story here!
To: just me
Well, I'm not sure how much I trust WorldNewsDaily to be completely objective (they're not as right-slanted as CNN or ABC is left-slanted, but it's impossible to find a news site nowadays that doesn't have some kind of slant), but it sounds like a pretty clear-cut case that should have a judge either laughing at the police department or yelling at them.

Yep, I'll agree with you when we see lots of people walking down the street or in a 7/11 store with ski-masks, bandito bandanas and panty hose covering their faces as an everyday occurance.

To: MinuteGal
Oh come on... You are fearing that a rash of women wearing veils and muslim dress will wreak havoc in town because of their great disguise... (remember, muslim men don't cover their faces)
At the same time that muslims in this country are getting not just second looks, but third and fourth looks, along with blatant stares. Talk about wearing a neon sign. You can't make yourself stand out more in a crowd.
Admit that it was kindof a silly thing to say? - Really, it is a pretty funny reaction you had...
;~D
To: knighthawk
This makes sense. If she's lost her mind, no point adding the kid to the mix. Plus, the grandparents have rights and deserve the company of their grandkid.
To: HairOfTheDog
Not a silly reaction at all. Here in Florida, an American woman who converted to Islam is allowed to have her veiled face-photo on her driver's license. She is driving while veiled or semi-veiled, cutting down on her peripheral vision, of course.
If you were a cop, would you like to have as your partner a veiled female officer with impaired peripheral vision? Don't laugh, it's coming.
If your child was hit by a hit and runner, and the only description by witnesses was "sorry, the perp was veiled", would you be happy?
As for Islamic men not covering their faces, would it surprise you to know that many of Bin Laden's gang made their escape from Afghanistan by walking across the Pakistani border disguised in flowing robes and burkhas? Even possibly the head murderer himself?
We have always been an open society here in America and a good percentage of the population walking around in shrouds does nothing for my sense of comfort.
Leni
To: MinuteGal
OK fine, whatever. I happen to think it is a pretty unpopular time to be a muslim in this country. I am not seeing a rash of converts just so they can wear the neat disguises.... They are uncommon enough that their issues at DOL in Florida are national news. They are, and will always be, the fringe in this country, and I think you are overstating it. But that's allowed...

Actually, it just means I am tacky to tease about such a thing..
However, I would agree in that that fairness and equality before the law is important to everyone in every case. Divorce is no exception.
(Some people here actually like bias in our courts.. When it benefits them of course.)

So you are in favour of the US government deciding to remove children from the custody of parents based on the religion of the parents?Look at the source of this article: Islam Online. It's a propaganda outfit.
Read this article to get the full story. The woman had a child from a *previous* relationship (marriage or affair; didn't say.) The child is now five. She met and married her Egyptian husband two years ago. Last February she converted to Islam, after a long succession of bizarre behaviors and failure to take her meds for mental illness.
The issue here is that the child is NOT the husband's. I don't know where the real daddy is, but the *grandparents* have asked the courts to step in - for good reason IMO. When a US citizen child disappears into an Islamic-law country, that child tends to disappear.
The child's passport has been confiscated until the court can sort out what's going on with this family, and whether this mother is really compos mentis enough to put her child in the hands of someone NOT his father who - according to Egyptian law - will have virtual life & death power over him should he leave the country.

I'm aware of the entire story. I phrased my question as a response to the poster's comments which indicated that he might be in favour of a court removing a child solely on the basis of the religion of the parents.
I've seen the facts of this story and I'm quite sympathetic to the concerns of the grandparents given the mother's history.

Followers of Mad MO (Piss Be Upon His Head) are not to be trusted, encouraged, accommodated or heartened. Their psychopathetic religion is a world cancer and should be repressed in every way possible. Its 1400 yr trail of death and destruction is too long already and for the sake of world peace should be ended. There is NO truth or decency in Islame and never can be.

Meanwhile, in Illinois, a Muslim policewoman was able to win her fight with the police department she works in, when they allowed her to wear the hijab while on duty after their initial refusal. Did anyone see this idiot on Oreilly? What scares me is not that she's wearing a scarf on duty, it's that she's on duty.
You would have had to seen the interview to know what I'm talking about - not a glimmer of intelligence in the woman. Bill was being unusually easy on her too. Could she really have been a deputy?
Bill basically asked her why she as a woman would convert to a religion that persecutes women, and cited the recent cases in Saudi Arabia. She managed to get something out about how that isn't what she's been taught, it's a peaceful, loving religion, blah blah blah.
