I read somewhere that Hitler, the guy who was nuts enough to invade Russia in the winter, was easily persuaded NOT to invade Switzerland, where every man has a military style weapon when he's enlisted in the national guard (and I think they let him keep it if he wants to when he retires), and every home has a year's supply of food and water. I'll bet no one dares to be so rude as to pick the pocket of a guy carrying a machine gun.

I dont know if he was that easily convinced. I read that he twice gave serious thought to it.

But the Swiss were well prepared. Hitler would have had to have fought the Swiss until the last Swiss citizen died, since no one in Switzerland has any authority to surrender, not the president, not any general. Also, all mountain passes and bridges were to be blown up, and heavily fortified forts were up in the mountains were Hitlers tanks could not go. There was no way Switzerland could be conquered, and it remained an island of freedom during world war 2, and also for the last 500 years.

When people chose to defend themselves, bad guys go elsewhere.

England, and most of europe, was not worth our american boys dying for, as it now appears, since the English gave up most of their individual freedoms voluntarily anyway.

On the other hand, Switzerland, would be a fredomm loving country that we should be proud to help defend.

Er...so why did he choose to invade Britain and Russia then, which were both heavily fortified and armed? But he avoided Switzerland, because everyone had a little peashooter rifle? Hmmm...sounds like nonsense to me. Sorry.

Switzerland has a big civil defense program. As I understand it each home has a year's supply of food and water and there is a plan in place to blow bridges and defend the country. Read the highlighted links above, if you don't believe me. The one that discusses HCI gives the facts in more detail.

This is great to read, especially coming from a UK paper. For yearsI have debated with Europeans who always use a "high crime in the US" augement in thier debates (usually as to why the US needs to stop allowing legal ownership of guns)now I wonder what argument they will use.

The UK could always follow our lead and allow people to illegally cross our borders, cloth, feed and give them medical attention at the tax payers expense and do nothing about them breaking the law. Look at crime rates in California and Arizona who have huge numbers of illegals sitting in their prisons (again at the tax payers expense) for crimes commited once crossing the border.
