Searching on John Loftus brings up some weird stuff. I was pinged to "Leftist Writer Slanders Republican Party. Claims they Recruited Ex-Nazis in the 1980s (BARF ALERT!). ^" earlier today but the thread had been pulled . Taken from "Bartcop" was the reason for the deletion.

Sure sounds like a John Loftus production. He uses the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Florida as a launching pad for attacks on Republicans. Loftus travels the state scaring the elderly about conservatives being tied to Adolf Hitler.

It came out in 1988 that one of the Republican "ethnic outreach" coordinators had been a member of the Romanian Iron Guard--Anton Ionescu's version of the SS. The Iron Guard managed make the Waffen-SS look like models of humanity and compassion, and this guy was from the worst days of that bunch. IIRC, before he could be indicted (on immigration charges), the Berlin Wall came down, and he voluntarily returned to the old country and renounced his US citizenship.

Wow! Not only did we have Jonathan Pollard spying on us (a man Loftus wants out of prison) but we had a member of Romanian Iron Guard in the GOP. Don't recall his name,do you? Maybe Loftus is right. We should all vote Democrat.

The name didn't stick in my head, but the guy's background did--I'd read about the Iron Guard. They even made Jochen Peiper (commander of Kampfgruppe Peiper, the folks who performed a mass execution of American prisoners at Malmedy during the Ardennes Offensive) sick to his stomach. Seems the CIA laundered his record for some reason, but not that well. And some of the other folks in the "ethnic outreach" program came under suspicion and bugged out for Eastern Europe in 1989 and 1990. The guilty flee where the righteous do not pursue and all that.

You don't have to agree with Loftus' politics (I disagree with him on Pollard--the only release he should get is from this life to the next) to admit that we shouldn't be turning a blind eye to ex-Fascists--and if the press could find that stuff out with a casual background check, the GOP sure as hell could, too.

BTW, my in-laws have attended quite a few functions that featured John Loftus as a speaker, and they have never heard him say anything which would appear to connect the Republicans to the Nazis. We did discuss the whole thing about the president's grandfather and great-grandfather and the loans to the Nazi party, and he was complimentary of George W.

He complimented the level of knowledge of the callers.

Florian Galdau, director of GOP outreach efforts among Romanians, and head of "Romanians for Bush." Galdau was once an Iron Guard recruiter, and he defended convicted Nazi war criminal Valerian Trifa.

Pavelic's outfit in Croatia was arguably the worst. But for some reason, how fascism expressed itself throughout southeastern Europe that was particularly brutal.
