FReeper NYCop sent me this and I have his permission to share it with you.

"Today at work I had the pleasure of being thanked in person by one of the guards at Gitmo for my letter which was printed in the base newsletter. I found out that JT160 is located right here in Uniondale LI and he said the guys all love getting mail. It felt real good to hear him say thanks. I told him of our upcoming collections of items listed by Snow Bunny and he said the guys would appreciate anything we could do. This soldier is also a Nassau County Police Officer and he came to interpret for us on a robbery case. The whole thing was very cool. Thanks for your help with that."

1944 Marianas Turkey Shoot: Japanese aircraft carriers Taiho and Shokaku sunk

Soon after dawn on June 19, 1944, the flight deck of the U.S.S. Lexington has become a frenzied blur of moving color. Blue-shirted plane handlers merge with the yellow of the plane directors, hookmen in green, chockmen in purple and firefighters in red all darting about readying aircraft for launching Pilots haul themselves into their cockpits and fire up their big radial engines, then, with a great howl of noise and rush of power, hurl themselves into the sky.
Radar has already picked up a large number of bogies approaching the American carrier force and TF-58 Commander, Rear Admiral Mitscher, has ordered every available Hellcat into the air. Immediately they are airborne, the Hellcat pilots will be vectored towards the intercept, 90 miles out the two mighty aerial forces will collide.

On that historic day, American Navy pilots ripped into wave after wave of enemy aircraft. As each new onslaught arrived there were more fighters there to meet them. Other squadrons joined in the melee and the radio circuits crackled with shouts, curses, warnings and cries of encouragement. "Hell this is like an old time turkey shoot!" yelled one pilot - and thus the battle became known as the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.

By the late afternoon the sky over TF-58 was swept clear of enemy aircraft, two Japanese carriers had been sunk by submarines and an incredible 373 enemy planes shot down. Mitscher lost only 23 aircraft and not one of his task force was seriously damaged. The U.S. Navy pilots had won an historic victory that paved the way to the final onslaught upon Japan.

Seen hurtling off the deck of the U.S.S. Lexington in Nicolas Trudgian's highly dramatic painting is the F6F Hellcat of Lt. Alex Vraciu of Fighting Squadron VF-16. With 12 victories already to his credit, Vraciu would add a further 6 to his tally in the space of just 8 minutes on that momentous day.

Lafayette May Become U.S. Citizen
Yahoo! | Thursday, July 18, 2002 | The Associated Press

Posted on 07/18/2002 11:02 PM Central by Willie Green

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Marquis de Lafayette, a French general who fought alongside George Washington during the American revolution more than 200 years ago, is closer to becoming an honorary U.S. citizen.

The House Judiciary Committee passed by voice vote Wednesday a resolution that would put Lafayette in the company of Sir Winston Churchill, Mother Teresa and Raoul Wallenberg as honorary U.S. citizens. Wallenberg was a Swedish diplomat who helped save thousands of Jews from Nazi death camps.

Committee spokesman Terry Shawn said he had no idea why it has taken so long for Congress to act on Lafayette. The Columbia Encyclopedia says the Chambrun family, direct descendants of Lafayette, are honorary U.S. citizens.

The measure must pass the House and Senate before the honorary citizenship is granted.

Lafayette helped the struggling American colonies fight the independence war against Britain after arriving in Philadelphia in 1777, where he was appointed a major general by Congress.

He quickly won the friendship of Washington. He distinguished during the war, was wounded and shared the winter hardships at Valley Forge. He also designed the modern French flag in July 1789, combining the royal white of France with the blue and red of Paris.
