”The horse-racing industry is being undermined by casinos and video-slots. Is horse-racing a "victim" in this, or included as part of the gambling problem? Hmmm.”

Oh! But the intent behind horse racing isn’t the gambling – it’s the breeding of fine animals. Gambling is only allowed as a way to fund the stables. (/sarcasm)

”No matter what happens in the casino, at least you get some free drinks and free cigarettes. ”

And – they are served by attractive young ladies wearing not much of anything. The only reason I stayed long enough to lose a couple grand (a dozen years ago) was because of the freebees.
Yea – right. But I did learn. I’ve been in a “real” casino one time, and until I learn to control my baser instincts it will have been my only time.

gambling is an evil, insidious industry. To ignore its problems is folly.

It's also a choice...I somehow suspect that if these over-the-cliff gamblers didn't have that, they'd be addicted to some other way to lose their money...the stock market or something else.

And, what about the state lotteries? They advertise as being good for education, or the environment, or the arts...whatever gets their money. And they're ubiquitous. You can't go into a convenience store without encountering an appealing scratch ticket display.

I don't gamble. The few times I went to a casino, and spent $20 of quarters. It had a nice environment, I was there for a concert (very well managed); the food and parking were much better than at a normal concert venue. The surroundings were gorgeous. They seemed to be very accomodating to disabled people.

No, I don't like gambling. But everyone is out to get your buck. It's not my concern how other people waste theirs.

Living in the heart of horse country (Lexington, KY) I can tell you without hesitation that few horse farms pull their own weight financially. Most are subsidized by owners who have other sources of income. There are more productive places to invest your money than in "horse-farming."
