"Having sharpened their knives on Charles Pickering and D. Brooks Smith, Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee turn [today] to Priscilla Owen, President Bush's nominee for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The accomplished judge had better wear her battle armor," the Wall Street Journal says.

This sounds like one of those "litmus tests" that the Democrats always accuse the REPUBLICANS of having for judicial nominees. But the a**hole press rarely calls them on it, rarely points out that the Democrats' litmus test on abortion is arguably stronger than any litmus test the Republicans might have.

Does anyone know if Leahy (Irish name) is a Catholic? If so, why is it always Catholics like Kennedy and Mikulski who take the lead on abortion rights, and why do so-called conservative Catholics like my father go along with it and give pro-abortion Democrats their uncritical and unwavering support?

that news was up on Planned Parenthood's Web site before it was even communicated to the Republicans on the committee or the Justice Department.

In my view Leahy is one of the most despicable men to have served in the Senate in recent history. He is a deceitful, lying, partisan hack of the worst sort.

Leahy is a disgusting slug. What is even more disgusting is Bushs failure to take action on this. What is wrong with him? He could have had every one of his picks sail through had he gone on the attack and demanded they be approved as part of the WOT. Now the moment has passed and it appears he will have a hard time getting anything through. Kissing up to animals does not work George. Your Mr.Nice Guy has blown up in your face. Your dad played nice with the tax increase. Enough said.

Preaching to GWB about being tough is like expecting Lucy not to pull away the football when Charlie Brown tries to kick it. He doesn't have it in his bones. He can play the sly game and the rope-a-dope game, but not the fist-in-the-face game.

My mother (not catholic) has been virulently anti-abortion her entire life. She honestly thinks that it is the worst thing that has ever occurred in the world.

She has voted leftist (pro-abortion) Democrat her entire life and will continue to do so. Because the Democrats are "for the little guy" (her words). She was a teenager in the Depression, so I guess that explains some of it. And in her eyes "they're [politicians] all alike".

Moral relativism works for Democrats, because moral relativism always works in favor of the immoral.

My father is anti-abortion, anti-feminist, not a supporter of "gay rights," doesn't like unions, strongly opposes affirmative action, supports school vouchers, but votes for liberal Democrats every time and absolutely detests Republicans. My only explanation is that he was a career attorney for the Veterans Administration and identifies with the Federal government, and resents Republican criticisms of "big government," takes it personally.

Abortion is destruction of jurisdiction. It coincides with national suicide worldwide.

Bob Dornan, I think, has said that Leahy is a "Catholic". But he is Catholic In Name Only (CINO) because it might help with the voters? He is with the majority of "Catholics" in Congress: Kennedy, Dodd (?)and so many others.
One benefit of the scandal within my Church is that our religious leaders are being expected to do their jobs. And this might finally mean excommunicating those "Catholics" who live public lives in direct opposition to Church doctrine. What a glorious day that will be when the mantle of "Catholic" is stripped from Teddy Kennedy's shoulders!

More on Leahy's Catholic upbringing and his pro-abortion stance...

Twelfth on the list of "Herod's Heroes" is the Democratic senator from Vermont Patrick Leahy. As an ally of satan through his uncompromising pro-abortion stance, he is enabling lucifer to "destroy both soul and body in hell." Through his actions he has become an enemy of God and the Roman Catholic Church. This is not a political statement on Leahy, but rather a moral statement; one he and his bishops should take very, very seriously.

Senator Leahy, born in Montpelier, Vermont in 1940, has a long history of Catholic education from his early years to St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont and then receiving his law degree from the Jesuit Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Evidently his classmate Bill Clinton's ideology influenced him more than the Catholic Doctrine he should be upholding.

He is now in his fifth term as Vermont's Senator and we call on him to come to his senses. Here is a man, who has worked passionately to fight breast cancer and introduce The Innocence Protection Act of 2001. With that kind of agenda, you would think he would be solidly on the side of Pro Life. But, noooo, he would rather subscribe to his party's culture of death. Don't you see a paradox in his causes? We would hope he will see the obvious link to increased breast cancer and abortion. We would hope he cares just as much for the innocent child in the womb as he does about the hardened criminal.

As one of the senior members of the Senate and his party, Leahy could do so much good, yet there have been no fruits because, through his action and record, he has steadily shown a disdain for the teachings of the Catholic Church and her mandate of upholding life in all stages. Though he voted to ban partial-birth abortion, he has still shown an alarming consistency in voting for and legislating pro-abortion measures that empower the culture of death. He will have to answer to God for these transgressions against Christ's innocent ones as Jesus says in today's Gospel in Matthew 25: 45, "'Amen I say to you, as long as you did not do it for one of these least ones, you did not do it for Me.' And these will go into everlasting punishment, but the just into everlasting life."

This group is trying to get Leahy excommunicated...they have an on-line petition.

I wish our natin's news media would do its job and communicate clearly to the americans just how bad the dems are in this process. People hear on the news that a dem blocked somebody, then they hear that a repub blocked somebody. They think it's all fair. They have no idea how bad it is, thanks to the news media keeping them basically ignorant. The ethic that we should have is that the media should inform the citizens in the congressman's home district just exactly how bad he is behaving. They won't do that now because they know it means electing a republican. So, that is how we get dysfunctional in our public life.

From the NOW website........................

NOW Opposes Nomination of Priscilla Owen To Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
July 19, 2002

"Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen's penchant for judicial activism may have earned her Bush's nomination to the Fifth Circuit, but it should not win her a seat on the Court of Appeals," said National Organization for Women (NOW) President Kim Gandy. "NOW and other supporters of a fair court system are calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to reject Owen's nomination."

"We've seen Judge Owen use the courtroom to further her narrow beliefs and ideals, going so far as to virtually re-write laws rather than fairly interpret them. The last thing the Fifth Circuit needs is more judges who can't leave their political ideologies at the door," Gandy said. "For example, Owen supports 'stricter interpretation' of the Texas law requiring girls younger than 18 to inform their parents before obtaining an abortion. In every case that came before the Texas Supreme Court last spring in which a young woman sought a bypass of the parental notification law, Judge Owen voted against granting the bypass."

"Even White House Counsel and former fellow Texas Supreme Court Justice Alberto Gonzales referred to Owen's extremist position in a reproductive rights case as an 'unconscionable act of judicial activism,'" Gandy said. "Owen has been described as being on the 'far right wing' of the Texas Court, even more to the right than Bush's own appointees to that court when he was governor. A judge whose political zealotry prevents fair application of the law has no place on the federal bench."

"In addition to disdaining women's rights, Owen has demonstrated a commitment to money over morality," Gandy said. "In 1994, Enron endorsed her and contributed $8,600 to her successful Texas Supreme court bid. Two years later, she wrote the majority opinion that reduced Enron's school taxes by $15 million, and according to Texans for Public Justice that court ruled in Enron's favor in five out of six cases. Now a household name for corruption, Enron contributed more money to Owen than any other corporation."

"Women's rights supporters across the country will be contacting the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee via phone, fax and e-mail to demand they reject the Priscilla Owen nomination," Gandy said. "NOW is keeping tabs on how every Senator votes on judicial nominations--and their commitment to women's rights will surely be reflected in women's votes."

The quesion I have is where is the pre-Hearing PR by the Bush administration?

They just can't keep sending people up there to get slaughtered by this bunch of bolcheviks without some planning and forethought.
