NAACP plans sanctions against Crestview to protest Rebel Flag
Florida Times-Union | 7-23-02 | ASSOCIATED PRESS

Posted on 07/23/2002 6:29:29 PM PDT by TexConfederate1861

CRESTVIEW, Fla. - A local NAACP official says the group is planning protests and economic sanctions against this Florida Panhandle city for refusing to haul down the Confederate battle flag.

It flies over a memorial to William "Uncle Bill" Lundy, Florida's last surviving Civil War veteran. He died in 1957.

Crestview's city council Monday unanimously reaffirmed a decision to keep the rebel banner flying. The council rejected a compromise offered by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People to put the flag in a shadow box at the memorial, or take it down and present it to Lundy's family.

"If the city doesn't respect the feelings of some people, some people ought not to respect the feelings of the city," said local NAACP chapter president Sabu Williams.

Williams said he would seek national NAACP support for protests and avoidance of certain Crestview businesses although he insisted that would not constitute a boycott.

The banner was removed from South Carolina's statehouse dome two years ago, but the NAACP has continued a boycott there because it was moved to a nearby Confederate monument.

Flag opponents contend it is a symbol of slavery and racial hatred, while supporters say it is part of their Southern heritage.

"We believe the flag should be lowered in such a way that respects a veteran," Williams told the council in front of a packed meeting room.

Sam Hayes, the council's only black member, then delivered an impassioned speech to keep the banner flying.

Wearing his Army uniform, the veteran of three wars pulled out his tattered brown and tan Company A battle flag with two bullet holes and said it was comparable to the Confederate banner because both were used in combat.

"I am offended by what people perceive it represents," Hayes said. "We are fighting about the battle flag, not the Confederate flag."

The Confederacy's first official flag was the Stars and Bars, which looked similar to the U.S. flag but had three stripes instead of 13. That gave rise to unofficial use of the battle flag, or Southern Cross, to avoid confusion.

The Confederacy later replaced the Stars and Bars with the Stainless Banner, a white flag with the Southern Cross in an upper corner. During the final days of the Civil War, a red vertical stripe was added.

Racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan later used the battle flag, with its familiar X-crossed stripes, adding to the controversy.

Philip White, spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans said he was pleased by Crestview's decision.

"This issue has come up a number of times and we feel we've got some closure," White said.

The travel, room and board, supplies for the numerous silly signs must have a centralized source, since all the people these whiners "represent" don't have the money to spend for these isolated "outrages".

Haven't these over-covered media events been sponsored by the incestuous relationship of the DNC and the NAALCP?

What a bunch of out dated racist pigs. What this organization really needs is a few young, educated, non-brainwashed, up-standing black youths to take over and use the organization for positive results instead of this hatred bologny.

You'll never free those you claim to represent as long as you corrupt their minds with the garbage you spew all over the Country. It's the only game you know how to play and its time has past. You are not a slave any more, in fact you never were the world is yours go get it like those I know did. Wake up! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Whenever they would hold rallies in SC, maybe five people would attend. Then they shifted over to the "bother people at rest stops" strategy, which backfired big time. My opinion? The NAACLP consists of about a dozen people with REALLY BIG MOUTHS.

When these "outraged" groups are referenced in any news reports, the actual number of "outragees" should also be reported, along with pictures of the ones acting "outrageous".

Maybe FOX News will catch on to the idea of exposing these asses lies.

The actual tape of these "hordes of 5" will be laughable from NY to Houston to Los Angeles and all points between (where is really counts).

Maybe we should agree to pay them reparations if they'll agree to leave the country and never come back.

These bogus fights make me not take black people's issues serious.......Kinda like the boy who cried wolf, they've wasted the spotlight on stoopid things like this and ignored the real problems.

They seem determined to live in the past...... not unlike the Arabs, and we can all see how well that works.

I grew up in Crestview and I remember when Uncle Bill died and the memorial was dedicated (about 1 year later). The whole town turned out. There used to be a sign as you entered the then small town which read "Welcome to Crestview, Home of Uncle Bill Lundy, the Last Confederate Soldier". That flag is not and has never been about racism or hatred. It is a tribute and is taken very seriuosly by all the people who remember Uncle Bill. My sister's best friend is the neice of Lundy and according to her, this is one particular political activist who stirs this up periodically (usually around elections) just to test the wind and bring attention to himself.

Unfortunately: All Southerners will have to be vigilant until we can get some kind of legislative protection for our heritage.

Until then, we will have to fight the battles!

You Dixie pingers are welcome to join my MSN forum group to discuss Confederate flag issues.

Here's a note recently posted by Bill Lundy's grandson:

Greetings,
This same thing is currently happening to my great-grandfathers monument in Crestview, Fl. The land, monument and flag was dedicated to him and erected in 1958...one year after his death. He was the oldest living confederate veteran and died at the age of 109! Anyway, the NAACP has now decided that it "must be took down"! It is not in front of the court house, but on a small piece of land about the size of a 20 by 20 foot sun room. Still, all of us Lundys are having a hard time fighting this. My great grand-father's name was William "Uncle Bill" Lundy. They was going to vote on maybe turning it over to a private group like a historical society, but the land belongs to the city and the city attorney said they could not do that. That flag has been up all these years and I am simply angry that they would do this to him, my family and all the other confederates' memories! It is wrong and nothing the NAACP can say will make it right! Thank you for listening to me rant. I usuall don't say any thing and just read the posts, because I am shy. But sometimes, I just can't seem to shut my mouth!
Bless you all,

Slavery under this symbol (give or take a few stars) = 89 years (1776 - 1865)

Slavery under this symbol = 4 years (1861 - 1865)

If slavery is the main issue here, perhaps the NAACP should be redirecting its efforts.

Old Glory is next, mark my words it's coming.

IT ALREADY HAS! We have political leaders not standing for the PoA, not singing the Ntl Anthem, changing the state song of Maryland, and disrespecting Old Glory. Ironically, it was Southerners who asked conservatives for help in keeping their traditions safe. The Conservatives sold out. They made bad deals with the NAACP, SPLC and others to "deliver" the black vote. The pressure was to remove Confederate symbols, flags, monuments, memorials, and history. Our conservative leadership failed.

Now the socialist-revisionist camp is after other American symbols and traditions. Hate to say, "we told you so"....but d@mn if we didn't see this one coming!

I agree, the people up North & the Liberals down here don't realize the peril they have put Old Glory in with the precidence they have set by the attack & removal of the Confederate battle flag.
It's been obvious for me for a long time that this was where this subject was heading, anybody with any forsight or 1/2 a brain can see how the NAACP is manuvering this subject towards Old Glory, the U.S. Government & Slave Reparations. What's sad is that Most people against the Battle flag can't see what they've done to theirselves. Well they will be getting a wake up call soon enough.
