Senate Democrats investigating the collapse of Enron Corp. said yesterday that they have no plans to question former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, a top official at Citigroup Inc., over its role in hiding Enron's debt from investors.
"I don't," said Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, when asked whether he intended to call Mr. Rubin as a witness.

"need to be explored." about like our panty waist GOP explored the Clinton's pardons, selling missiles to the Chinese, renting the Lincoln bedroom, Reno's Obstruction of Justice dept. etc. etc. etc.. I expect, based on past history, that thats about the most we will hear from our fearless leader Lott of nothing.
Will the Democrats EVER do the Right thing??? No they are evil crooks.
YO, bleeding heart Phil Donahue!! How bout this for compassion? You and democrats would have chewed up and spit out a republican for such heartlessness.
| I wonder if Foghorn Leghorn would refer to Mr. Rubin as "Bobby Boy"? | ||

Now hold on a second. You mean to say, Senator, caveat emptor?? Did you clear that remark with the DNC?
You must have missed the eBay auction:
L@@K! R@RE Republican Spine & Balls combo
MINT, never used matched sets. Low Reserve!
The winning bidder was Oldcrusty, and the feedback left was: Items exactly as described. Will make a nice match for the FBI files in my private collection. Would do business with seller again. A++++++.
This needs a re-write:
When asked whether he intended to call Mr. Rubin as a witness, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman looked at the reporter as if she were a complete idiot. "This is a Republican witch-hunt," Lieberman replied. "Why on Earth would we call a former member of the Clinton Administration?" Muttering, he then gazed around the room for Helen Thomas so she could throw him a softball question.
I would imagine he only said two words because he really didn't want to talk about the subject...
I sure am hoping
Seeing Rubin charted off in handcuffs would sure make my day and I predict the markets will knock the roof off if it does
The guy asked him if he was going to have hearings on Citicorp and Joe said no. I'm stunned, aren't you? :-)
Well, we'll see if the press can contain this one for the Dems. I don't think they'll be able to for more than a week or so.
You know, I think a fair campaign commercial is one which asks why the Committee is avoiding questioning Mr. Rubin. In fact, I think EVERY Republican who is on ANY talk show should ask this question whenever corporate crime is brought up. I think that would shut the Rats up pretty quick.
Well, maybe it's time FReepers and anyone else we can influence make telephone calls and send emails to this group of worthless politicians. They need to have a wildfire lit underneath them before they take action to get the "worms out of the can." It doesn't look as if the Senate Committee is going to do it on their own. I would like to see a massive campaign to get some real justice done instead of the insinuations of criminal wrong doing by the Bush Administration that is taking place right now. Only if we and others put on the pressure, will the real "worms" finally see the light of day. I think this is an important enough issue and feel we may be able to make a difference, especially if we use the information that is available at Free Republic to make educated statements.
Senate Democrats...refuse...investigate...CLINTON (appointee name here)....
no need to read any further, except for this:
"I don't," said Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, when asked whether he intended to call Mr. Rubin as a witness"
TRANSLATION: "Having make a token show of moral superiority to the American public by booting only Congressional Democrat to hate our leader, Senate democrats, satisfied that the masses of the worker class LIKE us again, will now go back to the lying, cheating, stealing and kickbacks that we booted Traficant for."
I, however, would like to see a decided increase in Republican statements concerning these issues of Democratic corruption and naked partisanship. Me thinks the Pubbies are either too bashful or reticent. I'm trying to avoid saying cowardly.
Oops! It just slipped out.

Exemption Won in 1997 Set Stage for Enron Woes: on an broad exemption to the Investment Company Act which allowed Enron to setup the numerous foreign affiliated companies which have played a part in muddying their finances.
Enron's initial efforts in 1996 to persuade Congress to change the law were thwarted by opposition from a powerful trade group and some federal regulators. The company responded by hiring the former boss of a leading staff official at the Securities and Exchange Commission to represent it in negotiations with the agency. In an unheralded five-paragraph order in March 1997, the S.E.C. official, Barry P. Barbash, gave Enron's foreign operations a broad exemption from the law -- the Investment Company Act of 1940.

I would wish for this to happen. But Rubin is the one clinton official everybody pointed to as "the ethical one" and I'm afraid the republicans will be afraid to besmirch his good (thanks to media propaganda) reputation.
It will need to be out of the hands of politicians in congress and let a criminal investigation turn up the goods on him.
Clinton and Treasury Secty knew during their admin that econmoy was a sham.
Elections 2000 come and are ULTRA ULTRA important that a Democrat win to help Cliton and Rubin hide the extent of the sham.
The Dems loose 2000 now have to beg Bush to help cover sham.
He does not play and Enron imlpodes!
Mr Rubin- when you learned of the sham and that it would not get covered you did NADA to help the poor litlle people to get out!
You only perpuated the Myth and made the fall larger for the poor Enron employees.
the DNC and Citicorp should cover the lost 401's and stocks of the poor litlle people at Enron.
Traverse this thread thoroughly.
Question: What's conspicuously absent here?
I'm in. I'll help spread the word, make calls, etc.
Maybe we need an official FReep of our congress critters, (especially the Republicans), to get them to wake up.
