Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), founded almost a century ago, is the largest one-on-one mentoring program in the world. With 500 affiliates across America, its been widely respected and boasts Microsoft, the NFL, Pillsbury, UPS and others as corporate sponsors.
That may be about to change, at least the part about being widely respected. BBBSA turned a corner earlier this month by approving a resolution not to exclude a mentor for various reasons, including "sexual orientation." Yes, were talking homosexuals here. This policy has been in effect at the national level for several months, but now its mandated for all affiliates.
Many folks will be uncomfortable about that. They believe that homosexuals tend to prey on children. The late Ann Landers said that wasnt true. According to the American Psychological Association, "There is no evidence indicating that homosexuals are more likely than heterosexuals to molest children."
The Human Rights Campaign, busily "working for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equal rights," approvingly notes that the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Child Psychiatrists and the Child Welfare League of America all have policy statements denying a connection between homosexuality and child abuse.
Still, such claims do nothing to alleviate the queasy feeling one gets when hearing about the notorious NAMBLA, the North American Man Boy Love Association. In existence for almost 25 years, NAMBLA claims it is "working to improve public information, to gain public understanding of the benevolent nature of man/boy love, and to raise the consciousness of boy-lovers through our publications, local working groups, international outreach, political and educational activities." As if boy-lovers need additional consciousness-raising.
Despite its avowed mission, some in "the homosexual community," wherever that may be, appear to have accepted NAMBLA. Its been allowed to participate in gay parades in major cities.
NAMBLA was also welcomed into the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA). About a decade ago, the ILGA was granted "consultative status" by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
The indispensable North Carolina Republican, Senator Jesse Helms, sponsored legislation withholding funding for any UN agency condoning or promoting pedophilia. Defending his proposal, Senator Helms noted: "In a 1990 resolution under the heading of Man-Boy/Woman-Girl Love, the ILGA referred to pedophiles as a sexual minority and called on its members to treat them with respect, and to engage in instructive dialogue with them." Yeah, many of us would like to have a little instructive dialogue with them. And a baseball bat.
The point is that, to at least some homosexuals, pedophilia is tolerable. Moreover, there are studies strongly suggesting that theres a connection between homosexual men and child molesters. A recent one was authored by Dr. Timothy Dailey for the Family Research Council. Before going any further, you need to keep in mind that the Family Research Council is considered by some to be one of the baddest bogeymen in the vast right-wing conspiracy.
A key finding in the FRC analysis is that homosexual men, while making up a very small percentage of the population, commit almost one-third of total child sexual abuse. As you can imagine, there have been charges that the study outrageously distorted statistics and logic. One researcher quoted in the paper asserted his views had been misrepresented.
Given the intense controversy, its probable Big Brothers Big Sisters of America will feel plenty of heat. Parents, mentors and contributors to the organization will have to decide if the new policy makes sense to them. Whats especially problematic is that parents wont even be told if their child is affected by the new rule.
We have to hope that BBBSA doesnt become a magnet for those wishing to harm children.
It would all be so much easier if everyone shared the perspective of a Log Cabin Republican leader who wrote: "Unfortunately, the homosexual communitys political leadership, which is dominated by radical leftists, has failed to denounce loudly the North American Man-Boy Love Association and other nefarious groups. But on this issue, as with many others, the leadership is removed from the constituency it purports to serve. For a sizable majority of gay men, sexual relations with children are viewed as morally appalling, and the adult practitioners of it are seen as pathological deviants."
How about the fact that a minority of priests in the Catholic Church (homosexuals) have brought about 95% of the molestation cases in the Church's sexual scandal, virtually all against teenage boys? The numbers speak for themselves.
Actually, thought the Boy Scouts have been through hell, it's an organization that's emerging stronger, freer, with more support from private donors and organizations. Boy Scouts is growing dramatically in our area. It's one place where teenage boys are relatively safe from homosexual indoctrination, men who model homosexual behavior, and from homosexual molestation.
Right. They want you to send your son out with a flaming gay, and for you not to even know. Parents will quietly abandon this program if they persist.
That's good, if true. But the Catholic mess makes it clear that a sizeable percentage of homosexual men have a strong sexual attraction to teenage boys.
As is confirmed by the Catholic homosexual priest / teenage boy rape scandal.
Exactly. The BBBSA can ignore the harm done to The Church when it was targeted and infiltrated by homosexuals at its own peril but is it ready to do so at the peril of the children entrusted to it?
Guns Before Butter.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
By the same logic, heterosexual men, making up a minority of the population and accounting for a large majority of sexual offenses against women, should be excluded as leaders in the Girls' Clubs. You agree with excluding heterosexual men as Girls' Club leaders, don't you?
It's not just the parents of kids who will abandon the program. I was just talking a couple of days ago with my wife about a statistic I'd heard or read, that 25% of American kids don't have a dad in the home. We were talking about how good it might be for me to mentor some dadless boy, and that brought to mind this program. But if they're going to have gays participate, I don't think I'll be taking part.
An amazing, not to mention depressing, factoid.
We may wish to keep in mind BBBSA's corporate sponsors:
ARAMARK, Arby's Foundation, Do It Best, Footaction USA, Harlequin Enterprises Unlimited, Jack in the Box, Microsoft, NFL, Pillsbury, UPS, Valvoline, Verizon, and Warner Brothers Studios.
Well, I will be please to answer that. I can certainly tell you that in an organization like the Boy Scouts, where kids go out camping on overnight trips with male leaders in the absence of parents, it would be CRAZY to have homosexual leaders. In the same way, the vast, vast majority of parents would not send out their teenage daughters with heterosexual men on overnight camping trips (maybe you would - the vast majority would not). In Big Brothers / Big Sisters, you have adults with sole access and supervision over these kids, in the absence of parents or other adults. A Big Brother can say anthing to his charge, model any behavior to his charge, or even try bad stuff, if he wants. BBBS is really stupid to allow this, as it will certainly lead to some homosexual molestations. The Boy Scouts suffered from a rash of homosxual molestations until it cracked down and established a kids' first policy protecting them from homosexual molestation. In the Catholic Church, we now have literally thousands of homosexual molestations against teenage boys (homosexual priests allowed one-on-one unsupervised supervision of teenage boys). Now, on the question of role models. I can certainly tell you, the vast, vast majority of parents don't want their sons going around town with a guy who says things like: "Wow, I like the way that guy's butt looks!" or "Gee, I'd love to go out with that man. He's so cute." Maybe you want that for your son. Most people don't. (And they're right to not want that!) Would you want your son going to the beach with a BBBS homosexual guy and changing in the bathhouse together? I sure wouldn't. (And I wouldn't allow my teenage daughter to put on her bathing suit in the presence of a heterosexual guy. Would you?) And finally, on your point, I don't know exactly what you mean by Girls' Clubs. I really don't think it's wise to have girls wholly supervised by a couple of heterosexual guys. I would really have to know the exact circumstances to know what I would think and allow for my daughter. But I think your problem is that you've lost your ability of discernment. These situations are not all the same. Big Brothers is talking about sole access of a homosexual man with a boy in the absence of any supervision. It's bad news. Boy Scouts puts kids and parents first. BBBS does not.
