I read that pornography dulls the senses and makes one insensitive. Don't know for myself as I don't indulge. Based on some of the flames thrown your way I wonder!

rather than just engage in scholarship, his point was to glorify Southern conservatism as those values are defined today

LOL!! Looks like you've been washed in the Jimmy Mcpherson/Asa Gordon school of thought. I can see you've never read Bradford and his fear that he would be misconstrued as a Southern nationalist. READ THE BOOK!! It's quite factual about the signers and has very little editorializing in it. You just can't handle the fact that this nation was established by a majority of Christians. Is that it? And please no quotes from that statist Hamilton or Paine either. More people than those two men signed the Constitution

Witty, witty, witty. I'd probably do that, were it not for my irrational fear of committing to porcelain enamel.

So, the's the party?

Funny though, dope is sort of like porn. I have experienced both and subtle amounts in private are not really my business, BUT.....I don't want my kids using dope and I sure would not want my daughters(especially) in the porn industry. Having a family sure changes one's perspective on a lot of freewheeling thought.

I hope that my sons don't get hooked on porn. I'd like them to, as men, know self-restraint and discretion, and respect toward women in general.

What's wrong with giving into our base physical needs? I kind of like breathing, eating, drinking, sitting on the john, etc.

Go ahead. Have your daily porn fix. It's a free country. Hope my sons don't get that way.

From within plain and simple. From the family unit to the churches, it is the hidden sin that no one has to know about but has absolute outside consequences. It has destroyed families, marriages, pastors, men and women alike.

Porn doesn't always destroy families. But it's true that a not insignificant number of families has been destroyed by porn. We have a couple of them in our church. It's particularly devastating to the children.

But the logic leap required to believe that someone without a previous inclination towards children would suddenly be driven to commit a physical act against a child when exposed to pornography is just laughable, IMHO.

Porn inflames the desires of those who use it. Same for a child molester, or a married man who decides he needs to search for sexual gratification outside of marriage because of the stuff he gets hooked on.

My parents never really made an effort to dissuade me from porn -- though they certainly didn't encourage an interest in it, nor did they actively assist in me obtaining it.

I was a teenager of the mid-90s. Back then, most people didn't have Internet access and those who did (like me) did it through a UNIX shell dialup account. As such, doing anything on the 'net required some level of technical expertise, and filtering was unheard of (due in large part to technical infeasability). I had no trouble locating 'net pr0n (though it was certainly not as prolific as it is now -- I got it through USENET), but it really didn't hold great interest. Perhaps I have very discriminating tastes, or perhaps I just don't care for the "artificial" nature inherent in pornography, or perhaps it was because it was a time when I was still using DOS and viewing images required a dedicated application, and I couldn't easily task switch while browsing my collection (of images in general -- I collected a lot of sci-fi art).

I figure I'm an adult and I can determine whether I will view porn or have sex. I don't need any dogooders and nanny-staters trying to regulate my life "for my own good." Get a freakin' life.

Whether or not you're an adult is hard to tell from this thread. But go ahead. Stock up on your porno magazines and your porno tapes and your porno websites. Close your blinds (please) and spend your hours with them. Nobody's regulating your life. If this is what you want, it's yours to be had. Oh, and get a freakin' life.

You don't need a PhD in Religious Studies to know that belief in God requires behavior modification.

Thoughout history, and continuing until now, specifics will always be debated about exactly what God's commandments really are.

These debates seem to sidetrack the big law: Love God with your heart, soul and resources. That speaks to sexuality. Obsessive addiction to sex is wrong.

G-d granted us the privilege of free-will. It is the choices that we make in life that make the all the difference -- to ourselves, our fellow men, and to G-d. The effect of pornography on the soul is the same as illegal drugs to the body -- a series of short-term highs that ultimately lead to one's self-destruction.

Hey there, Mr. Ghost. I agree with you! I think that the use of porn diminishes people (both the creators and the users).

G-d wants his children to be sexual beings within the context of a healthy marriage between a man and a woman.

Don't know many women who'd want to marry a heavy porn user. And I don't know many men who'd want to marry a woman who'd want to marry a heavy porn user!

How absurd. Are you an intern with the ACLU by chance?

I agree in large part and share the same concerns family-wise as yourself but I am reluctant to think of voyeurism as de facto addictive. I realize that some folks live out fantasies on the net via chatrooms and porn but I think by and large that is the province of those poor souls who can't get satisfaction through customary channels....many are plain lonely. Note I said by and large...I'm sure there is a Ted Bundy born everyday and we certainly have the culture to nurture him unfortunately.

As for teenage boys and curiosity. I don't think one can stop that completely. Just make sure they know reality from fantasy. All girls don't get naked for money nor do all look like Playmates....I think a lad can peruse Playboy without losing respect for women. I think MTV and the behavior of more than a few young women I've seen is as big a threat to that lack of respect as porn....

Oh - teenage boys will just about always find a way (much easier now) to get their pics of naked women. But with the Web, more and more (we see this at our Church) young and older men are getting hooked on really perverse stuff. I think it's like alcoholism. Some just can't stop once they're into it. As for the behavior of women on MTV - we're getting into skanksville there.

"I'm stunned and sad that a large majority on this thread (and I suppose the Free Republic) don't see this as a serious problem."

The primary problem with the post was the carelessness of the title and incomplete context.

Subsequently, though the subject matter (if we are to connect the dots) is valid, the ridicule you've noted from the back-of-the-bus-100-bottles-of-beer-on-the-wall Freepers is the net result.
