GOV. Gray Davis once again is mystified. Why would anyone think he'd tried to influence a water board decision favoring a Tosco refinery two years ago?
Maybe it's that odd series of campaign contributions totaling $70,500, starting the day after a vote that went against Tosco; then an unexpected reversal of the vote four months later; and through it all the continued flow of dioxin -- one of the deadliest industrial pollutants -- from Tosco's Avon refinery into the San Francisco Bay at five times the level originally allowed in its permit.

``As the governor says, there's always a lot of smoke but never any fire,'' says Steve Maviglio, Davis' press secretary, commenting on the timing of contributions. Maybe. But when you smell smoke repeatedly, it's not unreasonable to suspect a smoldering problem.DUMP DAVI$ & the Den of Socialists

As the governor says, there's always a lot of smoke but never any fire,... Maybe Davis should be nicknamed "Smoky".

Maybe Davis should be nicknamed "Smoky". Actually, I think that "Ex-Governor Davis," or "Former Governor Davis" would be a much better name!

You know, the cliche is "Where there's smoke, there's fire."

You know, up until this last week I thought that Simon would squeak by a victory with 48.5% of the vote.
I really think he's going to get over 50%. For California where Democrats have a 10 pt registration advantage, that's a huge victory.
Go Simon!

The most impressive thing to me is how the press corps, normally so protective of Dems, is really blasting Davis. At least that's my impression of the limited news I see way out here on the Right Coast.

You're right, and my thinking is this: the L.A. TImes has given him a pass on virtually everything because they are a DEMOCRAT driven paper (as opposed to true liberals). The other reporters are generally ideological liberals, and they don't like corruption. If the corruption goes with Democrats, they'll expose him.
Davis is so blatant about it ... one of his handlers said something to the effect of, if they DID have a pay-to-play administration, this wouldn't be so obvious.
Yeah, right.

Simon should be HAMMERING Green Davis on this. But where is Simon> Why isn't he standing next to some sludgy Bay Area water full of dead fish with all the press and cameras his campaign can muster? All I've heard is a reference to Mr. Burns on the Simpsons. It's cute, but he needs to start playing hardball and call Davi$ when his ethics come into question.

This is why I say Republicans aren't mature enough to win. What you propose is straight out of polical campaigns 101, yet Simon and his "brilliant" handlers are busy with only God knows what. All of the papers would cover this "news conference" and Davis would for once be on the defensive this summer.
Being a Democrat must be so much fun, they actually win and do it right.
