| Tracking the Left's Opposition to Christian and Jewish Conservatism | |
While Christian and Jewish conservatives -- members of the "Religious Right" -- are often categorized and labeled in the mainstream media, the people and organizations that actively oppose them (the Anti-Religious Left?) are often spared ideological labels while being quoted as experts on cultural, religious, or constitutional issues. Even the names of their organizations do little to betray their agendas: People for the American Way ... Interfaith Alliance ... almost sounds like folks you'd find in a Norman Rockwell painting. Here are some of the players aligned against the Religious Right, and quotes confirming their status. Bill Clinton People for the American Way From the PFAW Web site: "People For the American Way Foundation is the nation's pre-eminent expert on the day-to-day activities of the Religious Right. This essential 'watchdog' work involves keeping exhaustive records of what ultraconservative groups communicate to their own target audiences; being there to tell the truth when they deceptively tailor their messages for the mainstream media; and helping to organize other groups and communities to defeat the Religious Right." It's interesting that at the time when the term "religious right" was coming into usage, there was a much more threatening "religious left" coming on the scenes. Most of their direct efforts failed, but they did accomplish one thing: they alienated many of their conservative members who left in droves, thereby weakening their own influence. But these people still have a great amount of very dangerous influence in American political and religious life.
