There is also the old (perhaps outdated) maxim to consider that:

People make war over resources and make peace over factories.

Africa has lots of resources to fight over. Frankly, that's been a net disadvantage to the continent itself so far. The lure of easy money has proven more costly than the benefits it would provide.

Look at tiny Israel with no resources, yet it has created vast wealth compared to the African standard of living.

Also, consider Japan. Nigeria alone probably has more people (and certainly has more natural resources) than Japan, and Japan was devastated and bombed into near oblivion only a few decades ago.

Yet we don't expect that our next new techno gadget will come from Nigeria.

How can a country with more people and more natural resources than Japan - produce so little?
