'Black Hawk Down' Dad Bristles at Attempt to Blame Bush
NewsMax.com ^ | 8/11/02 | Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff

Posted on 08/11/2002 8:22:39 PM PDT by kattracks

Disabled Vietnam vet retired Cat. James Smith, whose son James was killed during the disastrous raid in Somalia memorialized in the movie "Black Hawk Down," took exception Sunday to ex-President Clinton's recent attempt to blame President Bush's father for the 1993 debacle during a recent interview with Washington, D.C. TV station WJLA.

"He seems to forget that when Bush number one sent troops into Somalia he sent them in by the tens of thousands. And they had complete armor, mechanized infantry, artillery, air cover support," Smith told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg.

While Bush the elder was president, the Somali warlords "decided to keep a low profile because they knew if they stuck their head up they were going to get it shot off," he insisted, adding, "So Bush number one did it correctly."

But things changed when President Clinton took over, the former soldier told WABC.

When his son's Ranger unit was sent to Mogadishu to capture notorious Somali warlord Mohamed Farah Adid, they didn't have the artillery, helicopter gunship or tactical air support they needed, he told Malzberg.

Smith's comments were prompted by Clinton's recent attempt to dodge responsibility for the episode, where he told WJLA, "Now, you know, I didn't blame (President Bush's) father for Somalia, when we had that awful day memorialized in 'Black Hawk Down.' I didn't do that."

Although then-Defense Secretary Les Aspin was forced to resign over the deadly blunder, Smith said he had no doubt that the decision to under-equip his son's unit came directly from the White House.

When he testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on the episode, the former soldier said reporters privately agreed, telling him, "Les Aspin had nothing to do with this. This was a White House decision."

"They knew how the White House works. They knew there was no way Les Aspin made that decision on his own."

Smith recounted his trip to the White House to meet Clinton, an invitation he suspects was prompted by advanced word on his damaging Senate testimony.

Instead of taking responsibility, the Vietnam vet said the president "blamed Les Aspin, he blamed the Defense Department, he blamed the Joint Chiefs.... he blamed everybody except himself."

At one point, Smith recalled, Clinton even attempted to blame the Rangers "for being too aggressive."

"There were three fathers there," he told Malzberg. "The three of us just leaned over instantaneously and he backed off of that one."

After the exchange, Smith refused to shake the Commander in Chief's hand, handing him instead a 3rd Ranger Battalion patch.

"Don't forget them," he remembered telling Clinton.

"I honestly believed that the Rangers had died in vain; that the failure to provide proper combat support would have made the difference," he lamented.

Capt. Smith also revealed that he has another soldier son now in Special Operations who recently served in Afghanistan.

During a recent conversation with his son's Special Ops commander, he asked, "Sgt. Major, are we doing this one right or is this just a knee-jerk reaction?"

After a moment's hesitation, Smith said the commander responded, "Sir, we've got a real Commander-in-Chief this time. This time we're doing it right."

Listen to Steve Malzberg on WABC, weekdays 6 to 8 p.m. ET with Richard Bey on "The Buzz," and 9 a.m. to 12 noon ET Sunday.

Klinton long ago had a "truth-ectomy". How can we expect him to say anything even close to resembling the truth on any matter?

NEVER FORGET.......NEVER FORGET.

In some words of Reagan, Peace Through Strength

This picture is not very peaceful, because we failed to show/use our strength......Clinton's fault entirely.

If this were my family member, I would want us to never forget, and to work hard to make sure we never put our military in harm's way, against insurmountable odds, ever again.

The blood on the hands of x42 and his (w)itch ......do you believe what goes around, comes around?

You know what would've been sweet? If Smith had signed the back of the patch. Then a reporter could ask Clinton if he still had it and if he said he did, the reporter could ask him to produce it.

Obviously, this assumes that Bubba threw the patch in the garbage, but I'd be willing to bet he wouldn't be able to come up with it.

Personally, I would prefer to see them blasted into outer space. But then, this might infuriate the extra-terrestrials and incite an inter-galactic war. So perhaps you are, after all, correct.

I would have preferred the ancient Roman tradition, reserved for the most incorrigible enemies. Crucify all males. Enslave all women and children. Kill all animals. Raze all structures. Salt the earth so nothing will grow there for two thousand years. Kill everyone who ever had anything to do with them. Obliterate their people from the face of the Earth. Lesson to the others -- don't f*ck with us.

Did they? Did they really vote him in twice? Given the vote fraud in 2000, I have alot of questions about his second term and Hitlery's Senate seat. I did a little polling during his second term, I could only find one person out of 2 years of asking people now and then, that would admit to voting for him. It could be just the conservative area I live in, but I thought the odds of finding only one person that voted for him odd.

Put him in the iron mask and bury him in some sub-basement hell hole for all I care. If the American public was as disgusted with him as I am, they'd flip him off and split once he showed on the scene. Any television station that aired him would lose sponsors since everyone would turn the channel as soon as he appeared. If I never see either of them again, it would be too soon. And I'm counting the days before the babykins the middle-eastern diplomat runs for office. Now there's an absolutely disgusting thought.

Ah! A person suspecting the truth of the "election" of Scumbag twice (and his witchmate). It did not happen. Have you ever heard of the book "Votescam" which explains why you can't find people who voted for the wretches. This stealing of the American vote is an established Democrat skill. We can only change the situation by doing away with computer voting. Back to the old local polls with an ID card before you vote. And lots of people watching the count.
Stalin told the truth: He who casts the vote decides nothing; he who counts the vote decides everything.

Thanks for the heads up. I did an interview for FR with Capt. Smith a few years ago and cried on the phone as he told me about his son, a young man who would still be alive today if not for one despicable piece of human garbage called William Jefferson Blythe Clinton. I am very much pro-life but would be celebrating Virginia Kelley's decision had she terminated this b*stard.

Capt. Smith refused Clinton's letter of condolence.

The horrific results of a "president" with no military understanding and a hostility towards the military.

But this was actually minor compared to the main result of Clinton's work (in Kosovo and elsewhere): 9/11.

I can just see Clinton talking to the head of Islamic Jihad after the TWA 800 bombing, "tell you what, ahhhhhhhh'm not gonna give you credit for that... watch 'n see..." and he slept well that night thinking he'd done a good job.

Clinton's essential approach towards terrorism was the same rope-a-dope policy he had towards the press regarding his adultery. Unfortunately, it was Americans that lost their lives, while Clinton got away with merely having his reputation sullied.

Actually, this is very much what I had in mind for any nations proven to be connected with the New York City Massacre on 9-11. I wanted to see their entire civilizations eradicated from the face of the earth. Kind of send a message that you kill thousands of innocent Americans only at your own risk. Go ahead and blow up discos in Germany but you kill Americans and you and your wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, cousins & etc. will pay the price.

I am not kidding.
