Pop up ads
24-Aug-2002 | self

Has anyone else been getting pop-up ads while surfing freeRepublic? I have gotten several without leaving this site. The latest is the Official 2002 Smokers survey which asks me to enter my name address and other information to win a flat screen TV. This one poped up after I clicked on the "Messages" link.

Go directly to ZDNET.

Do not pass GO.

Go directly to "downloads".

Download "Analog X Pow" and rid yourself of those ugly and smelly pests...

I've NEVER seen advertising on FR. You've likely gotten an applet installed that sends your browsing habits to an advertising company. Get yourself Ad-Aware (freeware) and get rid of it.

You may be getting pop-ups generated by a spyware program running in the background. Get a program called Ad-aware from www.lavasoft.com and install it, run it, and it will clean your computer of spyware programs.

Your computer has been infected with a program akin to VX2. It's a nasty program that hides in your comp and sends pop-ups out to 3rd party websites.

Go here to remove it.

When you, or your kids, download "free" software from the internet they will often attach programs that will track your internet activity and direct ads to you. These programs are not detected by virus scans because they are technically legal (you agreed to this, when you clicked ok).

It is not uncommon to find dozens of these so-called "spyware" programs on your computer.

This program will help you detect and remove them:

Be careful and back-up the files before you delete them. It gives you that option when it lists them to you.

Try the Analog X, it gives you the choice of selection and will not stop normal Windows pop ups when you open a window that is smaller than your default.
