Heavenly Help For The Sawgrass Rebellion

by Danny E. Meek

"We've got it! It's right here!" yelled an excited Don Lester as he waved a piece of paper wildly in the air. "It's official, The Sawgrass Rebellion will be held right here in Naples where it is supposed to be!"

Lester, one of the local organizers of the Rebellion, was referring to an Event Permit that he grasped in his hand.

He said that the third time was a charm and he never had any doubts that the group would succeed in its mission to keep the property rights rally in Collier County.

The first attempt to stage the event at the Collier County Fairgrounds ended after several weeks of negotiations when fairground officials suddenly decided the event was "too big" for the area.

A second try for a local private area was also denied, when the owners said that they did not want "unwanted opposition" from county officials.

The third attempt is a success and the Naples rally will be held on October 17 and 18 at the Assembly Center grounds of the First Assembly Ministries located at 3805 The Lord's Way, in Naples. The church campus is located off Interstate 75, about two miles south on Collier Boulevard.

The Sawgrass Rebellion is an umbrella organization founded to protect the property rights of South Florida residents through legislation, litigation, and public education in a national forum and property rights rally. The rally will include at least four different caravans from across the United States which will converge at Naples on October 17 and 18, then travel across the Everglades to Homestead, Florida on October 19.

The Paragon Foundation of Alamogordo, New Mexico, the largest property rights advocate group in the United States, recently agreed to help South Florida residents in their stand against "unwarranted taking" of their properties. Paragon’s Jay Walley set up headquarters in Naples, in a small, cramped office filled with notes, papers, and messages.

"The Lord certainly does work in mysterious ways," Walley chuckled. "Who would have thought that after looking literally all over the county, our answer all of the time was to look to the church for help. Isn't that just something? Pastor David Mallory welcomed our group with a handshake and a smile."

Walley, who said he went to Naples for a week to help and is still there four weeks later, noted that the Florida Sports Park, home of the annual Swamp Buggy Races, is located next door to the church grounds and will allow parking at their facility.

"The main stage and food facilities will be at the church and we will run shuttle buses back and forth to the Sports Park," said Walley.

Lester noted that now the facility has been secured, the final preparations for the two-day event would fall into place.

"We should be able to announce our entertainment headliners in the next few days," said Lester. "And I think our featured speaker will surprise everyone. When they find out who it is, it will knock their socks off. That alone will be worth the trip to Florida."

The caravans are part of the "Sawgrass Rebellion,” which now includes more than seven hundred groups pledging their support. The movement reflects the growing opposition to the unlawful and unwarranted taking of private property by local, state, and federal governments and agencies.
