Look, we'll probably hear more of the details in the coming days. It looks to me like he simply restated his positions in a formal letter to the Senator. All the other junk about who said what to who probably wasn't appropriate in that letter. He stated his positons and they all look good to me. I can wait for the other details.

Meanwhile, here are a few points to remember:

Bill Simon supported Proposition 22, the Protection of Marriage Initiative and continues to support it. Gray Davis opposed it.

Bill Simon demanded a veto for Assembly Bill 25, which created state-sanctioned domestic partnerships. Davis signed it.

Bill Simon believes in marriage ONLY between a man and a woman.

Bill Simon is pro-life and Davis actively promotes unrestricted abortion in all cases and all circumstances, all the time.

Bill Simon and his family have contributed thousands of dollars to crisis pregnancy Centers and unwed mothers' homes across the country. Gray Davis hired the director of the California Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL) and made her his policy director and chief of staff.

Bill Simon opposes blanket amnesty for illegal aliens, Gray Davis supports open borders.

Bill Simon believes you are taxed too much, Gray Davis believes you are taxed too little.

Simon is a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, Davis has signed bills that fly in the face of your right to keep and bear arms.

Simon supports home schooling and parents' rights to raise their children as they see best. Davis sits silently by while state government officials browbeat parents of home schoolers and threaten them with arrest.

There is no question that Bill Simon is our man in this election - it's not even a close call. Bill Simon is a devoted Christian, a loving husband and father and one of the most decent men I have ever met. There are 68 days left to defeat the worst, most liberal governor in our nation's history. We have a lot of work to do, let's get back to it.

Let's be patient and get the truth. We must stand behind Simon for Governor as he's a good man. The local radio stations are bashing him enough to enable Davis to save his ad money right now. Please...let's come together and get him elected. I'm confused but trying to understand as well.

Great statement, especially this :

Simon supports home schooling and parents' rights to raise their children as they see best. Davis sits silently by while state government officials browbeat parents of home schoolers and threaten them with arrest.

What took so long? Damage has been done

The damage was only done by knee-jerk conservatives who were willing to chuck a candidate who didn't seem to live up to some measure they have of ideological purity. They flew off the handle at the MENTION of a POSSIBLE problem, without even giving the candidate the time to answer to the matter at hand.

The damage will only be completely DONE if these same folks decide NOT go to the the polls and vote for Simon in the November elections. If they REALLY want change they'll work FOR Simon rather than AGAINST him!

Why didn't he just say that he never filled out the questionaire and that the San Francisco Chronicle lied about him in its story?

How badly does it matter?

If that is your attitude, then all we need to know about the candidats who run for office is their party designation. Let's just have the ballots read (R) or (D) or (L) or (I) and we'll just select the party of choice. No names, no speeches just the label. We won't have to read about the candidates or find out what they stand for or anything else. The democrats know that the republicans are bad, the republicans know that the democrats are bad. The epitome of the ignorant voter. Sounds good to me.

Or perhaps, some of you just get irritated when lies are spread about the man and he takes the time to tell the truth! I will never understand why "Republicans" (even Conservatives) participate in cutting one another down. If Mr. Simon loses, it will not be because of his strong family values stand.....it will be because of jealousy and lies from his own party!

"The candidate needs to personally address that question for himself and for the public before the opposition does it for him now that the fall campaign's about to get
under way." Er....I thought he just did. I think the question is, "Who are the true true Republican Conservatives?" Certainly not those who delight in spreading falsehoods about their own candidate!

I got this letter via e-mail. Guess I'm back in Simon's corner again. He has un-Fonged himself...provided this gets in the papers.

Most of the time that's all you do know about the candidates -- unless you only vote in high profile races, which may be a large part of the conservative problem.

That's why it's important to get involved at the party level and vote for the underticket.

Thanks SpottedOwl - this is all I was trying to say. I've read FR the past few days and I do not think that FR has been discussing the issues Bill Simon would want discussed.

The more he tries to keep "clarifying" for everyone where he does or doesn't stand the more he plays into Gray Davis' desire to keep the focus on BILL SIMON instead of Gray Davis' record of failed leadership.

I was going to reply to impeach98, then saw your post so I thought I'd reply to both of you at the same time.

Impeach has a point. There are many issues that Bill Simon can use against Gray Davis without mentioning the truly polarizing issues, such as gay rights initiatives. This is the land of fruits and nuts, after all ;-p The objective is to get rid of Gray Davis. Kalifornia is "so diversified" that, imho, Simon needs to stick to the issues that affect all of us. Issues like the electricity crisis, Metabolife (who cares if people get sick, just gimme the money), what's happening in the schools, Delaine Easton threatening homeschoolers (pagans homeschool their kids too, did you know that?), there's lots of issues he can flambe Davis with that many different groups will identify with. That's not attacking Simon, that's strategy... 31 posted on 9/1/02 8:02 PM Pacific by TheSpottedOwl

You can't wait to criticize a Republican while holding your fire on Governor Doofus.

Why, they're just following their alleged leader, who has yet to open up any kind of real fire on Gray Doofus, while in the meantime Gray Doofus has been hitting Simple Simon off the left-field wall with one after another television and radio spot. If nothing else, whomever is running the show in the press and advertising division of the Simon campaign should a) be called for utter incompetence, or b) be hauled before the boss and asked, point blank, "Are you now or have you ever been harbouring secret ambitions to be the next general manager of the Florida Marlins?"

Sorry, but I don't buy candidates who give off every impression of preferring to let everyone else (here at the FREEP and otherwise) fight their campaign battles for them.

The road to Damnocratic hell is paved with Republican't good intentions.

The press from the Simon Campaign has routinely pounded Davis since March. Go to his web page and read it month by month.

Advertising isn't relevant until the start of the political advertising season which is this weekend. Don't be distracted by Davis's low-ratings TV buys. You don't run TV ads in the summer. It is a waste of money. This is evidenced by the fact that Davis has spent $14 million since July and he hasn't moved beyond his 40-42% polling.

Would you rather Simon spend his scarce resources during the summer when no one is watching TV and the networks are playing reruns? or during the fall when people begin to focus on the election in the final 6 weeks?

People still listen to radio, no? Gray Doofus is still outhitting Simon on the radio ad front, for better or worse. And Simon is a man with resources enough of his own to call upon. People may not be watching what they used to call network television much in summer but they are still watching television around other channels and outlets, and Davis has the volume edge there, too. Forget Davis's polling, I've seen too many low or modest pollers who came out big in the elections regardless (and regardless of any real or alleged media bias, incidentally, Dewey v. Truman being only the most notorious example). If you've got the recources and the bastard is hitting you off the wall with spots, there really isn't any such thing as a waste of money. And you can be sure that Davis is going to drop the hammer even further come the final six weeks.

I've been to the Web page. Even with the vast reach of the Internet, it still isn't reaching everyone it needs to reach, even with our help. People are still buying newspapers and watching television and hearing radio. And the longer Simon's half-baked campaign people hold him back with little apparent rhyme or reason (this isn't like a local election, where you can hold back and hold back and hold back and then open up with both barrels loaded and reloaded for the stretch, and it can work overwhelmingly for you) the more likely that, no matter how exemplary a man Simon is, he will resemble someone who is so uncertain or noncommittal about campaigning - especially when the issue is and should be Gray Doofus himself, good and strong, since Simon's handlers can't or won't prod him to answer any and all questions about this or that matter expediently (like at the outset, don't give the Sacramento Sleazebucket any ammunition) - that real questions arise about whether he will show any sort of surety if and when he graduates from campaigning politician to working governor. And with that crowd in the State Legislature, California can't afford a governor with any kind of hint that he will be too uncertain of himself to govern reasonably.

Let me be plain: I don't want another term of Davis. But I'm beginning to think the California Republican't Party would have been better off nominating Courage the Cowardly Dog, if they were going to run a campaign this limpen for a decent man like Simon.

That's all Davis can hope for, turn the whole thing into Simon's religious and personal beliefs. Then the machine can kick in like they do every time Pat Buchanan opened his mouth. They'll be calling Simon a misogynistic, racist, Nazi. Someone needs to teach him the real rules of the game and quick!

Sorry, I will never just accept the party line. That is for the intellectually challenged. There is no shortcut to getting informed and accepting what the party says is just BS. Remember when GWB ran for govenor in Texas. He would not endorse or run on the party platform. In that ase how could you just accept that he was a republican and just vote for him? The (R) didn't tell you anything about him or his beliefs.
