I think the best bet for the US Liberal Community would be to try to form there own outfit.

I do too. And should it propound atheism, and promote homosexuality, and understanding for terrorists, and downplay patriotism, etc. etc., Boy Scouts would treat it with respect and tolerance. That is something the liberals are incapable of doing with regard to Boy Scouts.

"It would be interesting to see the membership trends in both organizations."

I posted figures on BSA membership a while back, but I can't find it. Over the last 5 years, BSA's youth membership in it's traditional programs (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, and Sea Scouts) has (I think) dropped about 1%. It would have been more, but Venturing (14-21, co-ed) has been growing tremendously.

However, the BSA also has a non-traditional program called Learning For Life. This is a curriculum-based program for use in schools. It's intent is to teach youth how to make ethical choices. However, it's all classroom based, there are no oaths, no uniforms, it's co-ed, and there's no restrictions on requiring religious beliefs, sexual behaviors, etc. There are curriculums for all ages from 1st grade though high school. The BSA is doing a remarkable job in marketing this program in schools, and it's having strong growth. In fact, there are about 1/2 as many LFL members as there are traditional youth members.

Going from memory, there are a little more than 3 million traditional youth members, 1.6 million LFL members, > 1 million traditional volunteer adult members, and around 4000 professionals. I know that the whole thing adds up to slightly over 6 million people, so those figures are a little off, but they're all the right ballpark.
