Donald Rumsfeld Press Conf. Did You Just Hear Him?
FOX NEWS | 9-3-02 | My Favorite Headache

Posted on 09/03/2002 10:22:21 AM PDT by My Favorite Headache

A question that was just posed to Donald Rumsfeld from one of the pool reporter's there at the Pentagon was "What proof do you have that Saddam is developing or has nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction?"

Rumsfeld-"That case will be made in the next couple of days and weeks for everyone to see"

Now between this comment that he just said and what Tony Blair said this morning....does it appear to all of you that game is on in the coming weeks for real?

Looks like the vacation is over and now they are going to lay the case out to the nation and world. Rumsfeld ignoring Iraq's offer for weapons inspection. Calling it the dance.

They both used the word "developing" which to me implies that Iraq doesn't yet have anything that can go boom.

That's thin ice for me to stand on, I know, but I'm still torked that LBJ used a phony Tonkin Gulf incident to escalate Viet Nam.

I guess I'll never trust our power elite.

I expect the next two weeks could be very, very interesting.

My guess is that we would rather not go to war with Iraq in mid-September, and that this stuff is basically an attempt to rachet up the pressure on Saddam, personally.

Notice, for example, that the rhetoric is not so much about war, as it is about getting rid of Saddam. To me this sounds like we're trying to get the Iraqi military to mount a coup.

(One wonders if Abu Nidal's recent "suicide" has any relation to this effort....)

It may not work, of course. But it'd be November or later before we did anything overt.

I heard Rumsfeld's comments on C-SPAN and it sounded like the administration will be making its case against Iraq in the congressional hearings over the next few weeks. Like you, it looks like PM Blair will do the same on his side of the pond.

That's true, and I have higher ethical opinion of Bush over Gore, also, but after some of what George The Younger has done, I remember the old Kingston Trio song that had a verse: "...and I don't trust anyone very much!"

Well, it needs to start soon otherwise we are into the terrible Iraqi winter months since this will be a long, drawn-out war with bloody street fighting, and house to house combat and (OH, NO!) the dreaded, "vaunted Republican Guard" and the entire population of Iraq and then are the Kurds really to be trusted and what about Iran.....

all government agencies to prepare for war by November 1st

Present their plans by 1 Nov. A little different than war by 1 Nov.

In any case, all government agancies already have emergency plans. Also, the military and civil defense are the only ones who are always ready and will actually have something to do in case of war. The rest will wait until the dust settles before venturing forth on their mail routes again.

Yes. Plenty of jerks out there with WMD, and I'd prefer to be armed and passive.

"Dear Iraq: Build what you want to build.
We've parked interesting big submarines near you.
They're real close to you. You launch? We launch.
You are a lot closer to our launch, and you are a more concise target. You won't feel a thing. You'll never know your launches went any where. We've got a helluva' lot more experience than you.
Adios!"

Skepticism is healthy.

I don't know if President Bush will lay out his case at the upcoming UN speech on Sept 12, but I doubt it. I believe he will first address the nation from the Oval Office, I believe he will do it at a time that won't endanger American lives. I believe President Bush will give clear and convincing evidence that this action is required, and I believe it will shut up his critics.

I'm skeptical too...we're lied to all the time...but I'm not skeptical of President Bush. We elected an honest man to the office, remember?

VP Cheney already stated that we want the regime of Iraq toppled regardless of whether or not they allow inspectors back in.

If the USA and the UK are about to present proof then that just strenghtens the case with the rest of the world.

Based on what both UK and now also US officials are saying, they must have the evidence already. I wonder what they're waiting for.

What I think is happening now is that we are applying so much pressure on Saddam in hopes that he will do something stupid--like attack Israel in some way. Then Israel is going to unload with both barrels--and we will clean up the mess that resulted when the $hit hit the fan.

Yes, I remember that we did elect him.

I'm cynical, he may be basically honest (refreshingly) but I'm still hurting that he didn't veto the Campaign Finance thing.
Actually where I am steel prices have gone UP after the tariffs and that isn't domestic steel. We've got less domestic available and more foreign and prices are up.

I'm not down on him as a person, I'm down on the whole damn system within which he chose a job.

Perhaps my cynicism is a mathematical averager for the optimists!

I picked the 6th of October because it is the new moon. The next new moon is the Sunday before the elections. Bush would be accused of playing politics and there wouldn't be enough time to win sufficient battlefield victories.

Not to put too much weight on the UK's influence (perhaps I'm not objective being an ex-UK (now US) citizen), but there is no way in hell that a Labour prime minister would compromise himself in such a way with US intelligence that wasn't real. Therein lies the proof that this is for real.

Just for FYI.

New moon? Not required for our night vision devices. The OLD Vietnam era star-scopes needed that sort of passive illumination, but our stuff today does not need illumination. NVG's and FLIR operate differently.

If anything, a new moon will help the Iraqi's and hurt us.

Make the case to congress, have congress declare war, THEN attack with all we have.

If the administration cannot convince congress that Iraq is dangerous enough for a formal declaration of war, then they should not be conducting war.

To me this sounds like we're trying to get the Iraqi military to mount a coup.

Right. After getting clobbered by us once before there may be enough Iraqi soldiers that will decide it would be safer to go the coup route than face the U.S. military again. But then again maybe the Iraqui's aren't that smart.

Hello sir. It is true that Bush has done some things very un-conservative in his domestic agenda (farm bill, education bill, Incumbent Protection Bill (aka CFR)) but his foreign policy has been positively Reagan-esque. He has stood firm on increasing the budget on the military and has picked up the mantle of a Missle Defense Sytem. He went into Afghanastan hard and has stood for the stepping down of Yassir Arafat followed by a call for a Democratic state in the West Bank/Gaza Strip area. He has called North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Cuba on the carpet. He has stood up against the UN on Kyoto, the World criminal court and the weapons testing ban. If Bush says that there are WMD in Iraq and Iraq has to go, I think it's time we believed him. Right now, I believe, Colin Powell is trying to use diplomacy to get Britain and other countries on board. Saddam will never accept our terms for a re-entry of weapons inspectors. He must go!

I predit that we will invade on October 15.

Nah. Regime change can be made much sooner.
Requirements:

1. Intelligence on S. Hussein's location
2. SEAL Sniper

Unofficial SEAL sniper motto: Sneak, sneak, sneak. Shoot them in the back. Run,run, run.

If we want to change the leadership, one sniper team is all that is needed.
Rattle the cage until intel points his location, then execute him like the rabid animal he is.
This would serve as an example to the next Iraqi leader as well.

Does anyone know how Congressional votes on war take place? Does such a vote have to be requested by the President, or does Congress itself decide when and if they will vote on it? And how long does it take? I admit I don't remember how it happened during the build-up to the Gulf War.
