Cannibalism is a "radical but realistic solution to the problem of overpopulation." -- Lyall Watson, The Financial Times, 15 July 1995

We must reclaim the roads and plowed land...

And just where are you going to grow the plants you like to eat? Oh, that's right - you think that humans starving to death is great!

Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental.

Yep, I'm sure all the rabbits (and other critters) eaten by wolves (and other predators) will agree that all their problems will be solved with no humans around. Won't they have so much fun!

I agree - these statements would be funny if they weren't so scary.

A great piece, but there's one thing I take issue with (though it's not just you or the author of this article).
Attack Of The Socialist-Luddites...
The original Luddites were not socialists, nor were they motivated by some general anti-technology ideology. They were simply folks being put out of work by automation. They may have been totally wrong in what they tried to do, but they were in no way equivalent to the sort of modern day people accused of being "Luddites".

This is just one more example that being "earnest" does not mean being "right"!

"Every time you turn on an electric light, you are making another brainless baby -- Helen Caldicott, Union of Concerned Scientists"

She was one of them.

One correction: whenever the name of this group is mentioned it must be placed in 'scare quotes' thusly:

The "Union" of "Concerned" "Scientists". They are not scientists, nor are they a union, nor are they "concerned" about anything but promoting Luddism.

"…To begin with, we do not believe that it is enough to preserve some of our remaining wilderness. We need to preserve it all, and it is time to recreate vast areas of wilderness in all the planet's ecosystems: identify key areas, close roads, remove developments, and reintroduce extirpated wildlife." - Earth First

"…It is not enough to oppose the construction of new dams. It is time to free our shackled rivers and tear down Hetch Hetchy, Glen Canyon, New Melones, Tellico and other concrete monstrosities." -Earth First

"…Earth First!ers also use confrontation, guerrilla theater, direct action and civil disobedience to fight for wild places and life processes. " - Earth First

"No matter if the science is all phony, there are collateral environmental benefits…. climate change [provides] the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world." - Christine Stewart, Canadian Environment Minister, Calgary Herald, December 14, 1998

"The answer to global warming is in the abolition of private property and production for human need. A socialist world would place an enormous priority an alternative energy sources. This is what ecologically-minded socialists have been exploring for quite some time now." - Louis Proyect, Columbia University

"They have cheated the case and I am angry about that, because that will come to our account. They use bad data, as well as for the Brent Spar as for the French nuclear tests. I am against nuclear tests, but one should use scientifical sound arguments…. No, Greenpeace has harmed the environmental case." - Paul Crutzen, Nobel Prize winner for his work on the ozone layer, cancelled his Greenpeace membership

Seems I recall the original funding for many of these groups came from the USSR in the '70s, looking to cripple West Bloc industry from within.

At the time, there were many valid issues, most of which have been addressed.

These are the leftovers, rebels without a cause that are revealing their East-Bloc variety of knee jerk socialism through the now threadbare veil of ecological concern.

The terrorist potential of such groups is real. (Look at the Unabomber, who carried out a premeditated campaign of serial murder and maiming over years.)

With the upcoming Global Summit in Johanesburg, and the ridiculous Global Poll on the environment at http://www.netpulseglobalpoll.com , this is a timely post, indeed.

Perhaps they should check out this website

http://www.vhemt.org

VHEMT (pronounced vehement) is a movement not an organization. It's a movement advanced by people who care about life on planet Earth. We're not just a bunch of
misanthropes and anti-social, Malthusian misfits, taking morbid delight whenever disaster strikes humans. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Voluntary human
extinction is the humanitarian alternative to human disasters.

We don't carry on about how the human race has shown itself to be a greedy, amoral parasite on the once-healthy face of this planet. That type of negativity offers no
solution to the inexorable horrors which human activity is causing.

Rather, The Movement presents an encouraging alternative to the callous exploitation and wholesale destruction of the Earth's ecology.

As VHEMT Volunteers know, the hopeful alternative to the extinction of millions of species of plants and animals is the voluntary extinction of one species: Homo
sapiens... us.

Each time another one of us decides to not add another one of us to the burgeoning billions already squatting on this ravaged planet, another ray of hope shines
through the gloom.

When every human chooses to stop breeding, Earth's biosphere will be allowed to return to its former glory, and all remaining creatures will be free to live, die, evolve (if
they believe in evolution), and will perhaps pass away, as so many of Mother Nature's "experiments" have done throughout the eons. Good health will be restored to the
Earth's ecology... to the "life form" known by many as Gaia.

It's going to take all of us going.

These are the leftovers, rebels without a cause that are revealing their East-Bloc variety of knee jerk socialism through the now threadbare veil of ecological concern.
My personal observation is that for any group, which is formed to solve legitimate problems, will eventually be hijacked by the wackos in direct correlation to how successful the group was in solving those problems.
For example, the civil rights movement actually addressed real social problems, and had truly massive support among blacks. Primarily they were successful - voting rights, employment, right to live and work where they want. Today the movement has been hijacked by the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jackson.
The feminist movement of the late 60's early 70's was focused on the issue of women's right to get jobs, not be discriminated against in the work place, and not suffer blatant unwanted sexual propositions and harassment in the workplace. They were successful. Today NOW is run by man hating lesbian feminazis.
The ecology movement in the 70's did bring needed reform. We don't have smokestacks dumping poison into the air, or factories dumping industrial waste into our drinking water. Our air and water today is far cleaner than it was in, say, 1960. So of course the ecofreaks have taken over.
In general, as a popular movement is successful, the early leaders retire and the mainstream members drop out - because they have BEEN SUCCESSFUL in achieving their objectives. This permits the wackos to succeed to the leadership of the organization. The more successful a movement, the less need of an organization, the more wackos you find taking over.
The only exception to this rule is when the organization is focused in an area where there won't be any media coverage. That is because the wacko's really want attention.

That would be Ms. Ann Thropy, wouldn't it?

I've seen it as Miss Ann Thropy too. And yes it was intentional on his(Christopher Manes) part that it is phonically misanthropy - hatred of mankind.

Human beings, as a species, have no more value than slugs. -- John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal

Haven't met a slug yet who put slugs on the moon.

If these quotes were so frightening, they would be funny.

Most successful=best known=best funded. Directors don't want to lose the bucks....

Only conspicuous example of someone quitting is the Lady who started MADD (Mothers against drunk drivers), who said that she had accomplished what she wanted, awareness of the problem, and further pursuing pushing the agenda would accomplish little real gain.

There is no substitute for personal integrity in any age....and bloody little of it left.
