Reading these threads still brings back tears and anger, and is a good reminder why the scope of our war must not be determined by apologists and appeasers.

We were on vacation that fateful morning at an isolated resort on the Oregon Coast.

I had awakened early and was trying to find CNBC to watch their morning stock program. The resort did not carry CNBC as I was flipping through their meager stations provided, I saw Peter Jennings talking and looking grim.

Normally, I would not watch Jennings unless you put a gun to my head and forced me to watch him. This was different, so I turned up the volume and was watching him and it appeared that a plane accidentally flew into one of the towers of the WTC.

As I was watching, the news and then pictures of a second plane flying into the second tower came on. Immediately I knew that we were under some type of attack. I moaned so hard with a few very salty words, that I woke up my wife.

She watched the reruns of the second plane flying into the second tower. Her response without any coffee, "Are you watching previews of some new Clancy Movie?"

I replied, "I wish that I was! This is for real!"

We sat and watched like millions and millions of others did.
We then heard of the plane hitting the Pentagon and later about the missing UA plane. Somewhere during this time period, the towers collapsed.

We were scheduled to stay at the resort for 7 more days. We decided to cancel and drive back home to the Kali Wine Country. We packed up and checked out. We weren't the only ones checking out. However, a few guests made it loud and clear that they would not be cancelling their vacations.

The drive down the Oregon coast was surreal. We get a little news on the radio until we drove past that station. Lunch at Mo's in Florence was spooky. Usually, there is a line and a wait of 15 minutes or more. The restaurant was half empty with no wait. The tv was turned on, and the news was basically a rehash of what we knew except, now word that the United Plane was down. I still remember a left winger newsie on tv saying that at that time the UA crash could not be tied into the other 3 crashes into the WTC and the Pentagon. I replied Bravo Sierra loud enough that people around me heard. Most agreed with me.

That night we spent the night in Brookings, Or., and the motel filled up shortly after 5 pm with people returning to Kali like us or people leaving Kali to return to Oregon, Washington or BC. Everyone was stunned and upset.

As I was unloading the Bronco, my wife turned on the tv to CNN again limited cable. I couldn't believe that they had the tired failures of the Clintoon cabinet on. We turned the tv off and went to dinner. Later, after dinner we finally got through to our family in Kali by phone.

We had thought about maybe spending a couple of days and nights in Brookings as it is one of our favorite Oregon spots. The next morning I went to the front office to get a news paper and to see what was going on. As I walked to the office a couple of Air Force Jets went streaking up the coast heading North. A couple of Surburbans with government license plates and loaded with guys with Glocks in holsters were at the the office with two of them checking out. They had gotten a flash message to head north to some of the dams and bridges.

I walked back to our room and the tv channel was on. A Portland channel was on. They had just closed down the Portland Airport and the Sea TAC airport was closed. We decided to check out and come on home.

The drive from Brookings to the Kali wine country is another drive without much radio coverage. When we got home and got the Bronco unloaded about 12 hours later, my wife told me to get on Free Republic to see what had happened and was happening while she got groceries.

Normally, she kids me about Free Republic. On 9/12, she like me wanted to know what happened and was happening. We both knew that we would find out at Free Republic.

We got our first look at the grim reality when I logged on Free Republic.

Not to take anything away from HalfIrish, but I have read an account of how two guys who were in building two looked at each other 10 seconds after the plane hit, and at the same time said, 'terrorists!'

Only CNN could be silly enough to have concluded anything else after collision #2.

Hmmm. I get that page and then I click on various other links for specific broadcasts. On those pages, I see the station emblem and links to the transcripts, reviews, etc., but I see no way to view any video. I have real player, windows media player, etc.

I don't think Osama bin Laden was named as the mastermind behind the terrorist attacks until for a few hours afterwards. I remember hearing speculation about who did it late that afternoon or evening. I don't think there was official confirmation for at least a day.

I just thought OBL was coming back to finish the job he started in 1993.
